3 INTRODUCTION Green Valley High School August, 2014 Welcome to the Green Valley High School. Green Valley provides a variety of outstanding educational school programs for families. Our programs offer options tailored to meet individual student and family goals. We continually research and develop ways to present and assess engaging, rigorous academic curricula that meets Common Core Standards. Our school is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Our staff and families realize there are many ways to provide students with an excellent education, including the traditional classroom model, modified schedules, CEM, virtual classes, or a combination of these services. We offer these alternatives for families in structured plans that provide the finest instruction. Our credentialed, highly qualified teachers provide outstanding curriculum guidance and utilize technology in innovate ways to meet student needs. All instruction is provided in a supportive, safe educational setting in which communication and partnership with families is always a priority. We also pursue real and relevant learning opportunities through our close association with many educational and community partners, including; Yucaipa Adult School and Crafton Hills College. Families are invited to participate in educational partnership activities to enhance the home-school connection. Back to School Night, Awards Assemblies, and School Site Council are a few of the outreach events that take place throughout the year. 8 ADMITTANCE Green Valley High School's maximum enrollment is 125. There is a waiting list for students desiring to enroll. Anyone interested in enrolling with us must see an administrator or counselor at YHS or OVHS to discuss the GVHS enrollment criteria fill out a "Request for Voluntary Transfer" form and attend Transfer Committee. The Transfer Committee meets five times a year; in the fall before school starts and at the end of the first, second, third, and fourth quarters. Each student applying to GVHS will be scheduled an appointment to meet with the committee to discuss the need for transfer. Students must bring a parent or guardian unless the student is 18 years old. Upon acceptance to Green Valley, students will be given an appointment to register with the principal and develop an academic goal plan and attend an orientation/support for success class. EARNING CREDIT Green Valley High School has a traditional five to six period day and operates under a nine week quarter system. Students have an opportunity to earn 5 credits per course, per quarter. Students need to meet all course requirements and maintain at least 80% attendance in order to receive full credit (5 credits) for a course. If students do not meet all course requirements, students will be issued variable or partial credit (up to 4 credits). Partial credits will need to be completed in Yucaipa Adult School in the afternoons. If a student meets all the course requirements and prove they can handle additional course work, they may complete additional classes for additional credit. Not all students will have an opportunity to take a full, six period day. Seniors will have the first opportunity to have a full schedule. As a result, it will be important to utilize the opportunities listed below. Students, who work outside of school, may also have an opportunity to earn elective credit. GREEN VALLEY EXTENDED LEARNING PROGRAM If students expect to make up credits, they must work beyond the regular day. Students must take advantage of one or more of the following options to make sufficient progress toward earning their high school diploma. Extra Credit Students may work with individual teachers to create extra credit plans. Students must have 80% attendance with no discipline issues. Extra credit plans are at the discretion of the teacher. PE Credit There may be times when PE is taught, and students will have an opportunity to earn PE credits within the school day. However, most PE credits will have to be earned outside of the school day, independently. Students need to complete the pink PE form, which can be found in the counselor s office, and have their parent/guardian sign the sheet. A variety of physical activities will be accepted as PE credits but no more than 5 credits will be issued per quarter. 8

9 Online Courses GVHS has an online program available. The program is self-paced. Students with 80% attendance with no discipline issues may possibly be allowed to earn additional credit through the use of the online program. Students interested must demonstrate self-motivation and time management skills. The contracts may be obtained in the counselor s office. Adult Education Students may concurrently enroll with the Adult Education program if they need to recover failed classes in order to graduate on time. These classes are held on our campus. Students must have a meeting, approval from the counselor, and a parent/guardian s signature to enroll in this program. Information may be obtained from the counseling office. Crafton Hills College Students who meet the guidelines are encouraged to co-enroll in Crafton Hills College. Upon completion of a 3-hour college course, students will receive 10 elective credits on their high school transcript. Mrs. Pauls can assist students interested in co-enrolling. Make sure to review the guidelines and deadlines at CHC s website: Summer School Summer school is held on the YHS campus and at the Yucaipa Adult School. The courses are offered on a first come first serve basis. Students must register with Mrs. Pauls in May. GRADING POLICY Grading policy: 90% to 100% = A; 80% to 89% = B; 70% to 79% = C Credits earning: Students may earn partial credits. Partial credits are at the discretion of the teacher. Student Progress Student progress reports will be mailed home at end of during the 4 th week of the 9 week grading period. Progress reports mailed at the end of each semester will include updated transcripts. Parents may monitor students progress through ABI. Final Exams Because students educational timelines vary, they may or may not have a final exam during the traditional finals period at the end of the semester. 10 GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS To earn a high school diploma from Green Valley High School, a student must successfully complete the specific requirements as indicated below. 1. Students must complete a minimum of 225 semester credits. 2. Students must successfully pass the California High School Exit Exam in both Math and English (passing score is 350). 3. 11 ATTENDANCE POLICY Attendance is a top priority at Green Valley. Students are expected to attend class on a regular, daily basis. Students will attend each class throughout the day, on time, and are expected to be prepared for learning. Attendance is mandatory; students refusing to attend school may result in a dismissal from Green Valley and/or Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) referral to the district s SARB panel. A Student Attendance Review Team (SART) meeting will be scheduled with the principal and staff at the school after five unexcused absences. A SARB referral will result after the sixth unexcused absence. Ten unexcused absences are deemed excessive by California Education Code and student may lose the privilege of attending Green Valley. Truancies will result in both school and possible law enforcement consequences. Truancy citations could be issued to students that intentionally ditch school. The Yucaipa- Calimesa Joint Unified School District utilizes Clean Sweep. If a student must be absent, a parent or guardian should call Green Valley High School at (909) to clear the absence before 9 A.M. on the day the student is absent. If a parent has not called, the student must bring a signed note, within five days, from the parent, which includes the reason and date(s) of the absence. The following are the only legal excuses: Personal (student) illness Personal medical or dental appointment Personal court appearance Funeral services for a member of the immediate family Quarantine Tardies Students entering school after the 8:00AM bell must sign in at the office and obtain a tardy pass. Tardies incurred during the remainder of the day will be marked by the teacher of the class in which the student was late. Students with excessive absences are jeopardizing their seat at GVHS and will receive a Tuesday detention. Students with habitual tardies will be required to attend a conference with administration. If the student continues to defy attendance expectations, he/she will jeopardize a seat at GVHS. Cell Phone Policy Students are allowed to bring cell phones to school but the school is not responsible for lost or stolen phones. Students are expected to put away cell phones during classroom time and instruction as well as abide by teacher s classroom policies. Teachers have a right to confiscate phones. Failure to comply with these expectations may result in removal from GVHS. 11

12 BEHAVIOR GUIDELINES Green Valley has an excellent tradition of providing a quality education in a small and caring learning environment. We want you to be successful and obtain a high school diploma. We will do whatever we can to help you reach your goals. All students at Green Valley High School are between the ages of 16 and 19. We rely upon students and staff to help foster a school environment which promotes the dignity of all people. You are expected to act like young men and women and you should expect to be treated as such. The basic guideline is: DO NO HARM WITH YOUR ACTIONS OR WORDS TO OTHER PEOPLE OR THEIR PROPERTY The following rules are structural in nature and help the program run with a minimum of conflict. 1. GVHS is a closed campus. This means: a. Only GVHS students are allowed on campus. b. When you arrive in the vicinity of GVHS, you must remain on campus the entire time you are schedule to be here. You may not leave for lunch. c. No visitors (YHS students or otherwise) are allowed. 2. GVHS students are not allowed on the YHS campus during the YHS school day. You are welcome to attend any event open to the public after school hours, but you must follow YHS rules. Dances are YHS only activities. A guest pass is necessary and you must be approved by GVHS administrator to attend. No loitering is allowed. 3. You are expected to follow your schedule of classes. Only Ms. Prentiss or Mrs. Pauls can make schedule changes. 4. No smoking is allowed on campus or in the neighborhood. E-cigarettes are not allowed. 5. The parking lot is off limits during the school day. 6. Electronic devices such as, but not limited to, i-pods, cell phones, and other valuable items are your responsibility. They should be left at home. GVHS assumes no responsibility if they are lost or stolen. You are expected to comply with the classroom teacher s rules and expectations in regards to electronic devices. 7. No drugs, alcohol, or weapons (including pocket knives) are allowed. 8. No graffiti of any type will be tolerated. 9. Clothing must not have reference to alcohol, tobacco or drugs, nor display offensive slogans or sexual pictures. 10. No fighting. 11. You are expected to comply with the district s acceptable use policy. No cheating, plagiarism, or inappropriate use of the computers/internet/personal electronics. (i.e. gaming, unauthorized web sites). 12

13 GENERAL SCHOOL INFORMATION Messages Please make pick-up and other arrangements before your student arrives at school. We will call students for emergency messages only. We will not deliver messages from other students. Deliveries Bouquets of flowers and balloons or other student gifts should be delivered to the home. While we join with you in the celebration of special occasions, these items are disruptive to the learning environment and will not be delivered during school time. We appreciate your understanding. School Visitations Parents, guardians, and community members are welcome to visit the school. Please make an appointment in advance to verify that someone will be able to meet with you. Visitors must check in at the front desk. We guard our learning time intensely. Therefore, please do not disturb a teacher during class. In order to maintain a safe and orderly learning environment, students friends or visitors without approval are not allowed on campus at any time during school hours. Student Parking Students who drive to school are required to park in the parking lot or street. Students are not allowed in their cars during the school day, including breaks. Bus Transportation No district busing is available. Omnilink is available for door to door service. Student fees are $2.00. Telephone Availability Student can use the phone in the office for urgent calls outside of class time. Cell phones may be used before school, after school, and at lunch break, BUT NOT DURING CLASS. Cameras Cameras may not be brought or used on campus, unless it for a class assignment. Closed Campus Green Valley High School is a closed campus. Students are not permitted off campus or in the parking lot at any time. A parent/guardian must provide a written, legal excuse (i.e. medical appointment) for a student to be released early. The office will verify all requests. Any student leaving campus must sign out at the attendance office. Lunches Lunch is served daily. Students who qualify may apply for free or reduced lunch rates. Forms for free or reduced rate lunches are available in the school office. 13

14 School Orientation Mandatory parent/student orientation meetings are scheduled prior to the start of each quarter. Each new student and parent/guardian will be personally invited to attend an orientation meeting prior to enrolling in GVHS. A review of the school s philosophy, direction, and program will be fully explained. The student will be placed in the appropriate classes after they are enrolled. Parent/Community Involvement Parents and community members are more than welcome to meet with the principal and discuss ideas and possible partnerships. Students benefit the most when the school and community/parents work together. Please contact the school to schedule an appointment. School Site Council (SSC) The SSC is a school community s representative body, made up of school staff, parents/community members, and students. The primary responsibility of the SSC is to participate in the development of the Single Plan for Student Achievement (also called the School Site Plan). The plan guides the school in improving student achievement. If you are interested in serving on SSC, please contact the front office. Fifth Year Seniors Fifth Year Senior may be allowed to continue attending school at GVHS at the discretion of administration. If a student is granted permission to attend a fifth year, he/she must maintain at least 80% attendance, 60% or higher grades and cannot have any discipline issues. Parking Lots/Vehicles For safety purposes, students are not allowed to go back out to their cars during school hours. Once you are on campus you must stay on campus. 14

15 RETURN TO YUCAIPA HIGH SCHOOL After transferring to GVHS, it is in the students best interest to graduate from GVHS. However, any pupil who has voluntarily transferred to Green Valley High School shall have the right to return to the comprehensive high school at the beginning of the following school year as long as the following criteria have been met [YCJUSD AR (b)]: A Transfer Request form must be filed with the counselor at least one month prior to the end of the semester. The student must have caught up and earned the appropriate credits for his/her age and grade level (120 credits entering 11 th grade, 165 credits entering 12 th grade). Students may only return at the beginning of a high school semester. The student must achieve C grades or better, have no discipline issues, and have 90% attendance. The following procedures have been outlined for 12 th admission/re-admission to YHS: grade students who seek 1. Students can only transfer back prior to the start of the fall semester. 2. A credit and progress review must take place with the counselor at least one month before the end of the school year. The student must demonstrate the following: A minimum of 165 credits. Note: Student must have earned 5 credits in each quarter. No partial credits will be accepted. Is not deficient in presently classes enrolled in. The student must achieve C grades or better. Have no discipline issues. 90% attendance. 3. A Transfer Request form must be filed with the counselor at least one month prior to the end of the semester. 4. All students re-admitted to YHS must remain in good standing and make the appropriate progress required for graduation. If the student does not make the necessary progress, the student will be referred to SARB for an alternative placement. 15

16 ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY We expect our students to be honest and complete schoolwork, projects, tests, research papers, and other assignments without copying the work of others and without plagiarizing another's work. Academic honesty means: A student has not copied the work of another student and passed it off as his or her own. A student has not cheated on a test by copying answers from any source. A student has not retrieved answers from the Internet. A student has not written words in poems, letters, research papers that are not his own but copied straight from another s text. When using the words of an author directly (verbatim), the student must show this by citing the author. Plagiarism (copying another s work without citing proper references) is cause for dismissals at universities. The school district takes this matter seriously as well. Consequences for Academic Dishonesty Any alleged violation of this policy will be investigated thoroughly and appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken consistent with Board Policy. For a First Offense the Following Will Occur: 1. Teacher makes referral to the principal and notifies the parent. 2. Loss of all credits for the assignment or test with no make-up permitted. 3. Conference with student, parent, teacher, and principal. For the Second Offense (Same Class), the Following Will Occur: 1. Teacher makes referral to the principal and notifies the parent. 2. Loss of all credits for the assignment or test with no make-up permitted. 3. School Suspension. 4. Conference with student, parent, teacher, and principal. (Note: a conference must be held with principal before the student returns to class) INFORMATION TO PARENTS Student Progress Reports Progress reports will be mailed home throughout the year. These progress reports will indicate the quality and quantity of work accomplished in each class half way through each quarter. Parents who have questions about their student s progress report should contact the student s teacher for information. Teacher addresses may be found on the Green Valley High School web site. More information regarding specific dates of reports will be included in the parent newsletter. The purpose of the student progress reports is: To provide a formal basis of communication between the teacher and the parent on the student s achievement. To provide parents with an update of the current progress of the student s achievement of academic standards, social skills, and work habits. To provide the parents with an opportunity to intervene as appropriate. 16

17 HEALTH INFORMATION Emergency Cards Please keep information on this card current. It is the only way to locate parents in the case of an emergency or if a student is ill. Students are not dismissed from school due to illness unless a parent, guardian, or designated person is notified. Call to update or change your home or work phone numbers. We need to have at least two local phone numbers that we can contact. Also, please note any health concerns regarding your student that either we or the hospital may need to know. Medication Medication must be brought by the parent/guardian to school in the original prescription container. Medications cannot be brought to school and kept in purses or pockets. This also pertains to any over the counter medications. Also, if your student takes medication at home for a health problem, a three-day supply is recommended to keep at school in the event of an emergency or disaster. Health Problems If a student has any health problems we need to be aware of, such as arthritis, scoliosis, hearing loss, heart problems, diabetes, allergies, etc.; please notify the office so we can work together in making necessary adjustments to ensure each student s success at GVHS. DRESS CODE STANDARDS Students are expected to dress appropriately for school. GVHS follows the district s Board adopted Dress Code Policy. The following specific guidelines apply to all students: Shoes must be worn at all times. A substantial sole is required and enclosed toe and heel footwear is highly encouraged. Clothing shall be sufficient to conceal undergarments at all times, including when the student is seated. Clothing that is sheer, see-through, fishnet or form fitting such that the shape, color or undergarments may be seen, including leotards or swimwear worn outside of the appropriate physical education class or extra-curricular activity, tube tops, halter tops, spaghetti straps, off-the-shoulder, and/or any strapless top or dress; and/or any top or dress that reveals the midriff, breasts, shoulders, or back is prohibited. Shoulder straps on garments must be at least 2 inches in width. Pants may not fall more than 2 inches below the natural waistline. Skirts or shorts shorter than the student s fingertips when the student is standing straight are prohibited. Hats, caps, and other head coverings shall not be worn indoors. Exceptions may be granted for medical reasons. Clothing, jewelry, or accessories with provocative statements or designs are prohibited. Clothing, jewelry, and personal items (backpacks, fanny packs, gym bags, water bottles, etc.) shall be free of writing, pictures, or any other images that are crude, vulgar, profane, or sexually suggestive, items which bear drug, alcohol, or tobacco company advertising, promotions, and likenesses, are prohibited. 17

18 Dress Code Policy (Continued) Earrings, jewelry, or accessories that present a safety hazard to the wearer or others are prohibited. Sunglasses may be worn on campus outside of class. Prescription sunglasses may be worn in class only with a written explanation from an ophthalmologist or optometrist stating why clear or light-sensitive lenses cannot be worn (or with advanced permission from the teacher for temporary periods when regular glasses are lost or mislaid.) Hair shall be clean and neatly groomed. Hair may not be sprayed by any coloring that would drip when wet. Teachers may impose more stringent dress requirements to accommodate the special needs of certain sports and/or classes. The principal, staff, students, and parent/guardians at each school may establish reasonable dress and grooming regulations for times when students are engaged in extracurricular or other special school activities. Teachers do have the authority to determine whether or not a student is appropriately dressed. If there is difference in opinion, the student will be sent to the office and the administrator is the final authority. The administrator has final say in terms of appropriate dress on the GVHS campus. The student is expected to comply with the administrator s directive. When a violation of dress code standards occurs, the student will be required to change into proper attire. Students will receive a warning; however continuous defiance will result in consequences and possible removal from the school. If you do not want to jeopardize your seat at GVHS, please follow the dress code. DISCIPLINE POLICY Student Behavior Policy This policy sets forth your rights, responsibilities, and expectations while at Green Valley High School. Your first responsibility is to read this policy, share it with your parents, and have a clear understanding of what is in it. YOU WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE for knowing and following all school rules and for accepting the consequences if you CHOOSE to violate them. These standards will be upheld. Every student has the right to learn in a safe, encouraging environment. This student behavior policy will help ensure that the student s right to learn will be protected. These policies have been established by the California State Legislature, the Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District, and the staff, students, and the parents of Green Valley High School. The rules and consequences are intended to be fair to everyone, predictable, consistent, and effective. 18

19 Student and Staff Rights Students have the right to: 1. Be treated with respect and courtesy by students and adults at Green Valley High School 2. A positive learning environment, including: a. A reasonably quiet, comfortable place in which to work b. Suitable curriculum materials c. A reasonable amount of individual attention and instruction d. Explanations and reasons for assignments, grading, behavior requirements and other actions affecting students learning and growth e. A clean, attractive, and functional school f. Reasonable opportunities to express themselves g. A smoke-free campus h. A campus free from the influence of illegal or abusive substances 3. Receive fair and consistent treatment without regard to gender, culture, or religion. 4. Students have the right to pursue civil remedies for discrimination and sexual harassment BEHAVIOR VIOLATIONS Education code 48900: A pupil may not be suspended from school or recommended for expulsion, unless the superintendent or the principal of the school in which the pupil is enrolled determines that the pupil has committed an act as defined pursuant to any of subdivisions (a) to (q), inclusive: (a) (1) Caused, attempted to cause, or threatened to cause physical injury to another person. (2) Willfully used force or violence upon the person of another, except in self-defense. (b) Possessed, sold, or otherwise furnished any firearm, knife, explosive, or other dangerous object, unless, in the case of possession of any object of this type, the pupil had obtained written permission to possess the item from a certificated school employee, which is concurred in by the principal or the designee of the principal. (c) Unlawfully possessed, used, sold, or otherwise furnished, or been under the influence of, any controlled substance listed in Chapter 2 (commencing with Section 11053) of Division 10 of the Health and Safety Code, an alcoholic beverage, or an intoxicant of any kind. (d) Unlawfully offered, arranged, or negotiated to sell any controlled substance listed in Chapter 2 (commencing with Section 11053) of Division 10 of the Health and Safety Code, an alcoholic beverage, or an intoxicant of any kind, and either sold, delivered, or otherwise furnished to any person another liquid, substance, or material and represented the liquid, substance, or material as a controlled substance, alcoholic beverage, or intoxicant. (e) Committed or attempted to commit robbery or extortion. (f) Caused or attempted to cause damage to school property or private property. (g) Stolen or attempted to steal school property or private property. (h) Possessed or used tobacco, or any products containing tobacco or nicotine products, including, but not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, miniature cigars, clove cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, snuff, chew packets, and betel. However, this section does not prohibit use or possession by a pupil of their own prescription products. (i) Committed an obscene act or engaged in habitual profanity or vulgarity. 19

20 (j) Unlawfully possessed or unlawfully offered, arranged, or negotiated to sell any drug paraphernalia, as defined in Section of the Health and Safety Code. (k) Disrupted school activities or otherwise willfully defied the valid authority of supervisors, teachers, administrators, school officials, or other school personnel engaged in the performance of their duties. (l) Knowingly received stolen school property or private property. (m) Possessed an imitation firearm. As used in this section, "imitation firearm" means a replica of a firearm that is as substantially similar in physical properties to an existing firearm as to lead a reasonable person to conclude that the replica is a firearm. (n) Committed or attempted to commit a sexual assault as defined in Section 261, 266c, 286, 288, 288a, or 289 of the Penal Code or committed a sexual battery as defined in Section of the Penal Code. (o) Harassed, threatened, or intimidated a pupil who is a complaining witness or a witness in a school disciplinary proceeding for the purpose of either preventing that pupil from being a witness or retaliating against that pupil for being a witness, or both. (p) Unlawfully offered, arranged to sell, negotiated to sell, or sold the prescription drug Soma. (q) Engaged in, or attempted to engage in, hazing as defined in Section (r) A pupil may not be suspended or expelled for any of the acts enumerated in this section, unless that act is related to school activity or school attendance occurring within a school under the jurisdiction of the superintendent or principal or occurring within any other school district. A pupil may be suspended or expelled for acts that are enumerated in this section and related to school activity or attendance that occur at any time, including, but not limited to, any of the following: (1) While on school grounds. (2) While going to or coming from school. (3) During the lunch period whether on or off the campus. (4) During, or while going to or coming from, a school sponsored activity. (s) A pupil who aids or abets, as defined in Section 31 of the Penal Code, the infliction or attempted infliction of physical injury to another person may suffer suspension, but not expulsion, pursuant to this section, except that a pupil who has been adjudged by a juvenile court to have committed, as an aider and abettor, a crime of physical violence in which the victim suffered great bodily injury or serious bodily injury shall be subject to discipline pursuant to subdivision (a). (t) As used in this section, "school property" includes, but is not limited to, electronic files and databases. (u) A superintendent or principal may use his or her discretion to provide alternatives to suspension or expulsion, including, but not limited to, counseling and an anger management program, for a pupil subject to discipline under this section. (v) It is the intent of the Legislature that alternatives to suspension or expulsion be imposed against any pupil who is truant, tardy, or otherwise absent from school activities. Note: The use or possession of tobacco or nicotine products on any property adjacent to a school campus is a suspendable offense. This code will be strictly enforced. Education Code Suspension for sexual harassment In addition to the reasons specified in Section 48900, a pupil may be suspended from school or recommended for expulsion if the superintendent or the principal of the school in which the pupil is enrolled determines that the pupil has committed sexual harassment as defined in Section

21 For the purposes of this chapter, the conduct described in Section must be considered by a reasonable person of the same gender as the victim to be sufficiently severe or pervasive to have a negative impact upon the individual's academic performance or to create an intimidating, hostile, or offensive educational environment. This section shall not apply to pupils enrolled in kindergarten and grades 1 to 3, inclusive. Education Code Suspension and expulsion In addition to the grounds specified in Sections and , a pupil enrolled in any of grades 4 to 12, inclusive, may be suspended from school or recommended for expulsion if the superintendent or the principal of the school in which the pupil is enrolled determines that the pupil has intentionally engaged in harassment, threats, or intimidation, directed against school district personnel or pupils, that is sufficiently severe or pervasive to have the actual and reasonably expected effect of materially disrupting class work, creating substantial disorder, and invading the rights of either school personnel or pupils by creating an intimidating or hostile educational environment Education Code Suspension and expulsion (a) In addition to the reasons specified in Sections 48900, , , and , a pupil may be suspended from school or recommended for expulsion if the superintendent or the principal of the school in which the pupil is enrolled determines that the pupil has made terrorist threats against school officials or school property, or both. (b) For the purposes of this section, "terrorist threat" shall include any statement, whether written or oral, by a person who willfully threatens to commit a crime which will result in death, great bodily injury to another person, or property damage in excess of one thousand dollars ($1,000), with the specific intent that the statement is to be taken as a threat, even if there is no intent of actually carrying it out, which, on its face and under the circumstances in which it is made, is so unequivocal, unconditional, immediate, and specific as to convey to the person threatened, a gravity of purpose and an immediate prospect of execution of the threat, and thereby causes that person reasonably to be in sustained fear for his or her own safety or for his or her immediate family's safety, or for the protection of school district property, or the personal property of the person threatened or his or her immediate family. A student may be suspended or expelled for any of the acts listed above if the act is related to school activity or school attendance occurring at any district school or within any other school district, including but not limited to the following circumstances: 1. While traveling to and from school 2. During lunch and break periods while at school 3. During, going to, or coming from a school-sponsored activity. Alternatives to suspension or expulsion will be used with students who are truant, tardy, or otherwise absent from assigned school activities. (Education Code 48900) 21

22 Policy with respect to Weapons, and Controlled Substances The Board of Education and staff of the Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District believes in safe schools. The District supports a zero tolerance policy and will enforce the consequences upon students involved with controlled substances, possession of a firearm, or brandishing a knife at another person which are outlines in the Notice of Consequences to Parents/Guardians and K-12 th Grade Students included in the enrollment forms. Any offense involving drugs, alcohol, dangerous object, and all sexual assaults and batteries will be reported to the proper legal authority. DISCRIMINATION/ HARASSMENT Any type of discrimination or harassment will not be tolerated at GVHS. The following are examples of harassment: Sexual: Any unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors or other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature, uninvited behavior that is offensive, negative, unfriendly and/or intimidating and leads to a hostile environment that makes learning difficult. Racial: Conduct which substantially disrupts school operations or interferes with the rights of others, consisting of physical, written, or verbal conduct relating to an individual s race, color, national origin or ethnicity, or perceived race, color, national origin or ethnicity, when the conduct occurs at a school or school event. Bullying: Physical, written or verbal conduct that is intentional, repeated and deliberately harmful when the conduct substantially disrupts school operations or interferes with the rights of others occurring at a school or school event. Religious: Conduct that substantially disrupts school operations or interferes with the rights of others by means of physical, written, or verbal conduct which is related to an individual s religion or perceived religion occurring at a school or school event. Sexual Orientation: Conduct that substantially disrupts school operations or interferes with the rights of others by means of verbal, written or physical conduct, directed at the characteristics of a person s sexual orientation or at their sexual orientation, or their perceived sexual orientation, such as taunting and defamation occurring at a school or school event. Disability: Conduct that substantially disrupts school operations or interferes with the rights of others by means of harassment based on a person s disabling mental or physical condition, or perceived condition, and includes any verbal, written or physical conduct, directed at demeaning the characteristics of a person s disabling condition, such as imitating manner of speech or movement, or interference with necessary equipment occurring at a school or school event. 22

The standards of behavior at Green Valley High School reflect Federal, State and local government laws and reflect a high degree of consistency and similarity with schools in our district.
