Column 1 : The horse world The world of horses and their owners: A fascinating world. But how does someone get into this world? Are these people grew up with horses? Pushed by their parents? Or is it just in the genes? Raised in the countryside, I only knew the farmers who stand a horse or pony in the meadow, talking against their horses (in dialect). Just a straightforward horse in the pasture. Fun to watch as they run back and forth and made all sorts of the strange jumps. They were also curious: Usually they come straight to you when you stopped at the edge of the meadow. Much later I realized that maybe it was not curiosity, but they already knew what they would get from me. A freshly picked bouquet of grass. I thought they were creepy: These powerful animals unannounced just came running straight at you. Still, my curiosity always got the better of fear. I had learned to place the grass always flat on my hand so that the horse could get it off with his lips. Sometimes I was overconfident and dared to hold the grass when the horse picked it up. I really felt like a hero! Sometimes I went with my parents to visit my aunt and uncle. They lived in a big house with a shiny floor. The television was always on. I saw smartly dressed men and women and horses that just run. My uncle always looked tense and at times he suddenly jumped up to cheer. "Money," he said then, "If I have enough money I buy the winner." And so I was introduced to a very different world of horses. A world where the horse was not straightforward in the pasture but could win races. 6

However, this has never really been able to get my interest. The uncomplicated horse in the field that is eating grass out of my hand, I found much more interesting. When I became an adult and had children myself, one of them was to my amazement attracted to horses. At first I thought that it would go away, but that was not true. It became her passion in life. And so in my forties I was introduced to yet another horse world. A world where I learned what the terms "show, nice conformation and smooth gaiths" mean. But more about that in the next column. Humphries Ilse Smits Boones Little Buckeroo Little Kings Byzantine Buck LM Hawks Belle Starr Tinkerbells Jumpz For Joy Party Boy Scott Creek Monarch Silverado Vermilyea Farms Miss Beverly Hills Dell Terras Smart Move When I bought the pregnant VF Miss Beverly Hills in the fall of 2011, I never dreamed that several months later, she would produce this feisty little colt... I felt in love with him, the instant I layed my eyes on him. Leaping into the world, so full of life and energy. I appropriately named him Tinkerbell's Jump For Joy Party Boy and he truly lives upto his name! With the charisma of a miniature Arabian, his refined expressive head, large eyes and elegant neckline, he stunnes all who see him. With his head held high and ears pricked up. Being the grandson of the famous Boones Little Buckeroo (in the direct sireline) and both his parents ( Little Kings Byzantine Buck and Vermilyea Farms Miss Beverly Hills) having achieved multiple World Top Ten Titles, Party Boy has some big boots to fill! 10

In the near future we hope to put Party Boy at stud in our own breeding program in which we strive for refinement, grace and elegance. We consider it a great challenge and our personal dream to develope our own bloodlines and bring our breeding products to show. To breed a beautifull horse, that you've bred yourself and achive good results. That is the icing on our cake and our great dream! In spite of his young age, Party Boy has been placed in the top three of his classes numerous times. 54 Farm Story: Ipsa Stables In the heart of Belgium, in the town of Rillaar to be exact, we find the miniature horses of Ipsa Stables. Driving force behind them are father and daughter: Paul and Annebet Vercammen. Father Paul was a very succesfull dressage rider and had bred many excellent dressage horses. I myself, grew up amongst horses and the horse itch was firmly planted in my genes. After a few quite serious fall from a horse, I was done riding. But I still wanted to work with horses so I diverted my attention to my two Shetlands, Beatle and Potter. Unfortunately, in a very short time, we lost Potter to colic and a few months later Beatle was diagnosed with a very rare form of tetanus. He was my very first pony, given to me at the age of 4, by Santa. He was my best friend for 1 4 years. Because Beatle was on his own after Potter died, I went looking for a comrad for him. I found a pretty little miniature mare, possibly in foal. I fell in love instantly and my parents decided to give her to me for my 1 8the birthday. In spite of being 5 years old, she had no name So my quest began to find her the most perfect name. She had a strong will and she got want she wanted, always. So we named her Ipsa Dixit van t Nieuweland. Van t Nieuwland is my father s stable name and Ipsa Dixit is Latin for she said it herself. This name being too long, we nicknamed her Ips. Several monthe later we were greeted by not one but two horses ( Beatle had died earlier that year). Ips HAD been pregnant and she gave birth to a pretty little filly. The name Wemeltje had already been chosen, and her mother being Ips, the little one was named Ipsa s Wemeltje. 54

As I wanted to register both my miniatures, I started searching on the internet for more information. I found the BMP and registered both horses. During my search, I discovered more and more about the miniature horse. A whole new world opened up to me. There was so much I could do with my mini s but also I realized that Ips and Wemeltje wouldn t come very far. They were great little horses but not showhorses. Then, I came across the website of Caluka UK Stud. Clair had this cute little black pinto colt for sale. However I was not looking to buy a AMHAhorse just yet so I continued my search for info. But that little colt kept sticking to me, and I looked at pictures of him everyday. I decided to contact Claire and after several s to and fro, I made the big decision. Caluka UK Heart N Soul, aka Mitchell, became my first AMHA stallion. I absolutely did not want him to grow up on his own so I set out to find him a buddy. I found Guy of STP Stables. STP Eros Starfire, better known as my Stipje, was a gorgeous, well built colt at first glance but when he started strutting his stuff, my heart skipped a beat or two. I was sold and brought him home. Several months later our very First showseason started. Results wise not the greatest but we had such immense fun!!! And as amateurs we found that to be the most important. Because I had two AMHA stallions and my boyfriend and I really wanted to breed our own foals, we started looking for a compatible mare. We saw different mares and we bought the beautifull black pinto mare Halona van Stal Heijden. She was in foal by Silver Plates Baccarra Couragio van Silver Spring Farm, but we lost the foal prematurely, a few months before her due date. We decided to breed her again that same season but to no avail. She didn t get pregnant. We had her checked out at the clinic in Merelbeke and she was given a clean bill of health. So no foreseeable problems for next breeding season. We were quite happy as we hope to breed some good foals from her. And one day, we hope to be able to buy more breedingstock but that is a wish for the futuren.. 55

As for showing, last season was one of some modest successes, especially for Mitchell, now a gelding. Towards next season, I hope to show both Stipje and Mitchel in the driving classes. Mitchellwill probably do a few halterclasses too. Stipje s halter career is sadly over. He got stung directly on a facial nerve so he has some paralisation in his face. It does not bother him at all but its not a very pretty sight. He will not be staying home, though. He will compete in the driving and maybe even jumoing and hunter classes. For nown..we will enjoy a well deserved vacation untill we start preparing for next showseason. Annebet Vercammen The results of the Summer Show can now be found on the website in the archive. 56

A reallife horse in a hospitalroom, a magical experience For the non-profit organisation Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses this is an everyday reality. It consists solely of volunteers that visit over adults and children in various hostitals and hospices and social events every year. This organisation also has an literatureprogram, Reading is Magic. The volunteers bring miniaturehorses to schools, at risk programs and libraries to bring books to life and thus inspiring children. The program is highly succesfull and has even won an award. In early december of 201 2, they received a special request: After the tragic events that took place at Sand Hook Elementary School, the community specially asked the Gentle Carousel Miniature Horses to come to Newtown. Therapyhorse Magic, accompanied by a team of volunteers, travelled from Florida to Newtown later that month. The other horses that came along, were carefully selected for their vast experience with working in schools. The community of Newtown organised a daily schedule for the therapy horses to visit children at schools, private visits and to visit the aidworkers. Magic was asked to visit children in the Newtown Library. After the earlier events, few children came to the library anymore so just a few children were expected to come to see Magic. However over 600 people showed up! USA Today: The library in Newtown has set up a childrensprogram with the miniaturehorses. The enthusiasme of the people seemed to be a new beginning and a great step forward after many weeks of mourning. 58

Students of Sandy Hook Elementary School and their families had private time with Magic at the Newtown Youth Academy Sports and Fitness Center. Hundreds of survivors and their families stood patiently in line for hours, waiting for their moment of love and affection from Magic. It took over 4 hours before everyone had been in to see Magic. And although the team was meant to stay for just one week, they ended up staying in Newtown for two weeks. The Governor of Connectict, Dannel. P. Malloy: I want to thank you for you time, compassion and expertise in the aftermath of the tragedy that has hit Sand Hook ElementarySchool last month. In Newtown, Magic and the volunteers met with the parents and brother of the 6 year old Catherine Hubbard. Catherine had not survived the disaster that struck her school. When, during Hurricane Debby, the worst storm ever experienced by Gentle Carousel, a little filly was born, after conferring with her parents, they named the filly after Catherine. The little filly is being trained to work children at schools and hospitals. Jennifer Hubbard, Catherine s mother, said to feel honored and that she knew her daughter would have been so too. The Governor of Florida, Rick Scott: Your compassion is a wonderfull reflection on the state of Florida 59

In may 201 3, Gentle Carousel, together with the now 1 year old filly Catherine, returned to Newtown. They visited St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis and then Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital. And the little therapy horses worked with traffic victims in Washington DC. TIME Magazine named Magic one of History's Ten Most Heroic Animals. He is the only living animal on the list. He was also named AARP s Most Heroic Pet in Amerika, Readers Digest/Americantowns Power One Hero, Newsweek/The Daily Beast's Ten Most Heroic Animals in the USA. CNN: For a town that needs a hero, a hero is on the way. The horses make a great impression on sick children. A little girl with leukemia and a recent heart transplant said: Magic makes my face hurt, from laughing so much! A small boy who had turned blind from a braintumor, held Magic s head against his own so he would always remember what Magic looked like. He said to his mother: it is like Magic can see straight into my soul A little boy suffering from a lifethreatening disease, had spent most of his life in hospital. He asked for a visit from Magic. He was so happy, hugging Magic. After the visit he said to his mom; I ve never had a happy day before now but from now on every day will be a happy day In order to train the little horses optimally, they require a controlled environement. Gentle Carousel has a unique partnership with the university of Florida en the Shands hospital in Gainesville. Gentle Carousel are able to train the horses in a hospital environement. The horses learn to walk stairs, ride elevators, to pilot across different kinds of floors and to be extremely carefull moving through hospital equipment. They also learn to deal with strange loud noises such as ambulance sirens and alarms and sounds of medical equipment 60

Late may, the therapy horses were working in Moore, Oklahoma. When the largest tornado in the history of America hit Oklahoma City, they themselves became tornado survivors. The community of Moore had requested Gentle Carousel s help and they arrived just hours before the EF5 tornado hit. They were visiting kids at a school that was struck and almost destroyed during an earlier EF5 tornado. According to professor Howard Bluestein the tonado consisted of several smaller tornado s that whirled around each other as if it was one large tornado. Such a storm was extremely rare. Just minutes before the storm hit their location, the horses and volunteers were evacuated south. The hotel they were staying in, was seriously damaged but that did not bother the little horses al all. They were not impressed with the hectic bussle around them, nor the tornadosirens going off. They were, after all, trained to cope with such sounds and noise. They stood quietly in their trailer, munching their food. More information on the Gentle Carousel can be found on their website: 61
