He is a Professeur Honnoraire (oμότιμος Καθηγητής) of the University of Geneva and an honorary Professor (Επίτιμος Καθηγητής) of the Technical University of Crete. Over the period from 1968 to present, he gave graduate and undergraduate courses in many areas of Information Technology in English and French: Computability Theory, Automata 2

3 Theory, Operating Systems, Formal Languages, Information System Design, Data Base Μanagement Systems, Data Models, Office Information Systems and Object Oriented Software Development. He was supervisor of numerous Ph.D. theses. His ex-students hold important positions around the world. He was a consultant to numerous companies and worked for short periods in Bell Labs, IBM Research Yorktown Heights and Arthur D. Little. IV. SCIENTIFIC WORK The number of publications exceeds a hundred; in the following, only some examples are mentioned. He was involved in numerous scientific committees in universities, research institutes, international scientific conferences and in outside scholarly activities. Computational Complexity Starting with a Ph.D. thesis on "Partially solvable and almost solvable problems", he carried out research during the years on different aspects of computational complexity. 4 C. Data Base Management Systems In , he led one of the pioneering research groups in data base management research. He was initiator and participant of many projects in the field of relational data base systems. The MRS system was on of the first Unix based data base management systems. This system has been distributed widely around the world and is now commercially available under the name EMPRESS (Rhodnius Corp.) The LSL data base system was a basis of a system further developed by a company in Japan. The paper on functional dependencies was one of the first in Functional Dependency Theory. An integrated office automation system was developed, which provided form management, data base management, electronic mail and word processing on personal computers. Models were developed for the design and analysis of office systems. A prototype was built which was one of the first multimedia office filing systems. 5 E. Object Oriented Systems From , he led a very innovative research group at the University of Geneva dealing with various aspects of object oriented systems. The group participated in a major EU project ITHACA led by Siemens-Nixdorf.
