The National Society of Black Engineers 40 Years of Excellence Karl W. Reid, Ed.D. Executive Director
Outline Introduction Our pipeline, our challenge What is NSBE doing to address the challenge? Partnership opportunities with AAES
Introductions Dr. Karl W. Reid, Executive Director, 5 months with NSBE 16 years helping to increase college access and success for students of color MIT Executive Director, Office of Engineering Outreach Programs Associate Dean, Director of Office of Minority Education UNCF (The United Negro College Fund) SVP of Academic Programs and Strategic Initiatives Senior VP of Research, Innovation and Member College Engagement Research and Publications College success factors for African American males and other students of color Blogs and writes about strategies for student success Education Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from MIT Doctorate of Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education Served as an NSBE chapter leader and as National Chairperson Professional
Our Pipeline, Our Challenge DEFINING THE PROBLEM
The STEM Challenge in the United States The STEM Pipeline Is Leaking Badly Approximately 4 million 9 th graders entered high school in 2001 Four years later, 2.8 million of them graduated and 1.9 million then went to either two- or four-year colleges; however, only 1.3 million were actually prepared for college. Less than 300,000 majored in STEM fields, and only about half graduated college with a STEM degree by % 66% For African-Americans the STEM yield is ~1-2%; we need to increase the yield 10X! 70% 21% 60% 100% 70% 46% 32% 7% 4%
Our Pipeline. Our Challenge.OUR PROBLEM Elementary and Middle School New Collegiate Majors Professional Engineers STEM Interest Engineering Performance Engineering Career Pre-collegiate Students Losing Interest In STEM Students Not Matriculating To Sophomore Year or Earning a Degree Professionals Leaving the Sector
The Pipeline Challenges Are More Acute for African Americans Share of engineering degrees awarded to African Americans WHY? 93,423 (Total Undergraduate Engineering Degrees Awarded in U.S. in 2013) 3,620 (Engineering Degrees Awarded to African Americans) 2, (African American Men ) (African American Women) 3.9% of undergraduate engineering degrees were conferred to African American students across the United States
Preparation and Access are Key Leverage Points Only 18% of African American 4 th graders are proficient in mathematics While 81 percent of Asian high students and 71 percent of white students attend schools that offer a full range of math and science courses-- algebra 1 through calculus; biology through physics--only 57 percent of African Americans and 47 percent of American Indian students do. - Change the Equation
What is NSBE doing to redress the challenge? WHY NSBE?
Founded in 1975 Who is NSBE? Born out of an urgent need Retention and professional development of African American engineering students United we stand divided we fall.
NSBE Today by the Numbers To increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community 31,000+ Worldwide membership (Pre-College, Collegiate, and Professionals) 12,500+ Number of 3 rd through 8 th graders who ve participated in Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) camps since ,000+ More than 12,000 members have posted their resumes in our Career Center 9,000 The approximate number of individuals who attend our Annual Convention each year 350+ Number of chapters represented within NSBE 230 Domestic and international companies that currently partner with NSBE 47 Organizations that partner with us at the highest level of support 11 Number of SEEK camps in 2014 that expose kids as early as the 3 rd grade to the fundamentals of engineering
Great 8: Metrics-Based Approach STEM Interest Engineering Performance Engineering Career 1. Number of students with a positive STEM experience by 5 th grade 2. Number of 8 th graders taking algebra or prealgebra 3. Number of students taking high school calculus or precalculus 4. Number of students matriculating into schools of engineering 5. Freshman-to-sophomore, & sophomore-to-junior retention rates 6. Number of students graduating with degrees in engineering 7. Grade Point Averages 8. Number of students employed as engineers or entering graduate school
NSBE Today How We Address the Challenge Year-Round Programming for SEEK and NSBE Jr. members Increased Retention Rates of NSBE Jr. and Collegiate members Leadership-Based Programming Year-long engagement of SEEK rising 6 th graders in DC, Houston and Chicago Enrollment of graduating NSBE Jr. seniors in freshman Summer Bridge Programs Programs that enrich and stimulate the academic/leadership skillset of our membership Standardize and expand NSBE Jr. programs like First Robotics, Ten80 Retention Program and data tracking at all chapters National Leadership Institute, T.O.R.C.H. community outreach, Hack-a-thons, Study abroad experiences, etc.
NSBE Today Pipeline Development Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) Increases aptitude in math and science and interest in pursuing STEM career fields Project- and team-based curriculum to teach engineering and science concepts Engaged 12,500 students and 2,000 undergraduate mentors since inception Over 2, grade students and 400 NSBE mentors in 2014 Long-term vision: 100,000+ students Pre-Collegiate Initiative (PCI) Chapter and mentor-based programming Encourages students in grades 6 12 to attend college and pursue technical degrees Provides leadership and activities to help students discover engineering and technology
NSBE Today Academic Success Summer Bridge Scholarships - Financial assistance to enable needy students to attend their institution's Summer Bridge programs - First year of pilot (2013): 27 students, 96% retention rate, 3.33 GPA - Second year (2014): 51 students NSBE Retention Program - Focuses on raising the retention and graduation rates for minority engineering students - Develops working relationships with engineering institutions to enhance and expand early support of underrepresented minorities Exploring Careers in Engineering Webinar series to expose freshmen to career opportunities in the top 10 engineering disciplines
