Please read the application materials carefully and be sure to complete all sections in addition to including the supplemental materials. The supplemental materials may be sent to our office under separate cover. The TRiO Bridge Application process is open to all Upward Bound & Upward Bound Math & Science participants who will graduate from high school by June 15, 2015, have a complete admissions application to the University of Texas at Arlington for Summer 2015 by April 1 st, 2015; and is in good standing with their respective UB/UBMS program. The Bridge Program is intended to: Introduce entering college freshman to college-level coursework and life in a college community Enable participants to experience the demands of college and to develop the skills necessary to succeed in college while under the guidance of TRiO staff Allow participants to earn college credit The Bridge Program includes payment for room & board, tuition and student fees for up to six (6) college credit hours, and books & supplies. The Bridge Program is competitive and students are expected to submit a complete, organized, and typed application, inclusive of all required materials, and which reflects their best efforts to present themselves as motivated students who are willing to work to succeed in a postsecondary degree program and who are positive and appropriate role models for their peers. 2 THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT ARLINGTON TRiO PRE-COLLEGE PROGRAMS EXPECTATIONS OF BRIDGE STUDENTS Bridge students are expected to successfully complete the summer semester. If the Bridge student withdraws from classes before the end of the summer semester, the student and their parents/guardians will be responsible for reimbursing the UT-Arlington TRiO Pre-College Programs for all expenses associated with the student s participation in the program. Bridge students are expected to attend all classes and work towards passing each class with the highest grade possible. Bridge students must have the Bridge Coordinator s approval before making any course changes. Bridge students are expected to achieve a minimum of a 2.0 GPA for the summer session. Bridge students will attend all group and individual meetings with staff personnel as required. Bridge students are also required to attend Bridge Orientation and the Bridge Banquet. Bridge students are required to attend all regularly scheduled tutoring sessions for their classes, as arranged by the Bridge Coordinator and the Student Support Service office in University College. Tutoring is provided at no cost and is a benefit and service provided to our Bridge students. Failure to attend these tutoring sessions will result in having the privilege revoked, in addition to resulting in appropriate disciplinary action by the Bridge Coordinator. Bridge students will demonstrate the behaviors and attitude of leadership and cooperation with all students, program staff, and university faculty and staff. Bridge students can be dismissed from the program at any time prior to or during the summer session for failure to meet expectations and requirements, for failure to provide a positive role model for pre-bridge students, and for engaging in actions detrimental to the TRiO Pre-College Programs and the University of Texas at Arlington. BRIDGE POLICIES Transportation to and from the University of Texas at Arlington will be provided for Upward Bound Math & Science State Participants ONLY. NO personal vehicles are allowed. Once on campus, students may only ride in official University of Texas at Arlington-sanctioned vehicles. The student is responsible for any parking citations accrued if parents and/or visitors are coming to visit or pick them up/drop them off. Bridge students must reside in the assigned UT-Arlington residence hall. Roommate requests by students may be considered, however, final roommate decisions will be made by the Bridge Coordinator. Bridge students are discouraged from visiting with pre-bridge students during the program, outside of organized activities where Bridge students may be invited to attend and/or participate (i.e. Academic Bowl, Banquet, etc.) and meals in Connections Café. In these circumstances, Bridge students are expected to follow the same rules as the pre-bridge students. If a Bridge student s behavior becomes disruptive, they will lose the opportunity to attend those activities.

3 THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT ARLINGTON TRiO PRE-COLLEGE PROGRAMS BRIDGE POLICIES (CONT D) (UB Bridge Students ONLY) Bridge students may participate in the program while employed part-time off-campus. Prior permission from the Bridge Coordinator is required to participate in the program while employed. Permission may be granted, but on a case-by-case basis. If it becomes clear that work responsibilities are interfering with academic success or with Bridge activities, students will be asked and required to resign from their employment in order to remain in the program. UBMS students may not be actively employed during the Bridge program. Bridge students who plan to leave campus for medical appointments or to visit with family, are required to notify and discuss the arrangements with the Bridge Coordinator five (5) days prior to leaving. Failure to notify program staff of leaving campus will result in appropriate disciplinary action, and/or our office contacting university and local authorities of your disappearance. Bridge students who are accepted to the program will receive forms to complete regarding medical consent and other important information. Bridge students AND parents/guardians are required to sign and complete all required forms. Bridge students will refrain from any activities and behaviors which are illegal, counter to University of Texas at Arlington rules and regulations, and the TRiO Pre-College Programs Bridge Handbook. Bridge students will also refrain from any activities and behaviors which result in being a poor role model for pre-bridge students and/or a poor representative of the TRiO Pre- College Programs, and which show poor judgment in terms of endangering themselves or others. FINAL NOTES Be aware that summer school classes are regular university courses taught at an accelerated pace. The class hours and work of a regular sixteen-week semester course are compressed into four-tofive weeks. It is imperative that Bridge students focus on academic success and to be responsible and manage their time effectively. Bridge students are asked to submit a final high school transcript to UT-Arlington, showing graduation date and all standardized test scores (i.e. TAKS, ACT, SAT, PSAT, etc.). Students should also submit any dual credit transcripts from granting postsecondary institutions.
