1 Vosne-Romanée aux Brûlées Fact sheet Appellation Officially a 'premier cru', but possessing the class of a 'grand cru'. Tasting This is a powerful aristocrat of a wine, to be taken seriously. The impression is one of concentration, and the touch of spiciness it frequently offers us shows that's its name is well chosen. It is true to the 'terroir' of Vosne in that its strength is not expressed through aggressive elements. On the contrary, it is a well-balanced and complex wine. Keeping It is not easy to grasp the complexity of Vosne Brûlées immediately, but you can comprehend its majesty. It is always an impressive wine, but you often say to yourself: "I should have waited longer". Maturing A wine which goes at its own pace, which is not a very fast developer. When you taste it from the cask, you are struck by its potential. Its complexity appears later. It is more 'solar' than 'Cros Parantoux', and therefore appears easier to drink, even if it evolves more slowly. As far as casks are concerned, it isn't hard to please: it is happy with the best Bertranges and Tronçais oak. Vinification One of the few wines which makes itself..., or which requires very little intervention at least. Vines Most of the original planting dates from the 1930s. The grapes are archetypal tiny 'millerand' berries. They always possess a high degree of concentration and can remain on the vine for a long time without spoiling. The balance between sugars and acidity is excellent. Surface area, situation & orientation This magnificent 'terroir' lies at the foot of the slope, just below Richebourg, oriented towards the east. It is situated at the beginning of a 'combe' and therefore subject to a certain coolness. The soil is not deep at all, and the plough often comes in contact with large stones or even scrapes the underlying rock itself. Tasting notes from the press 2009 January, 2011 : "(from a.70 ha parcel, most of which are also 70+ year old vines). A broad-based nose combines upper and lower register fruit aromas, particularly highly spiced cassis and black berry liqueur with plenty of secondary nuances that include violet, wet stone, anise, clove and earth, most of which are also reflected by the extract-rich, full and serious tautly muscular flavors that are shaped by the firmly tannic spine and simply stunning length. As it typically is, this is a very powerful wine that should age effortlessly for years."
2 2024+ Note : January/February 2011 : "Deep red-ruby. Deep aromas of smoke, minerals and Oriental spices; showing its oak today. Juicy blueberry and spice flavors seem rather clenched today, owing to the wine's very firm acid/tannin spine. Less elegant and seamless than the Echezeaux, but this still has the essential silkiness of the year. Finishes very pure and long, with a youthful reticence. Should be a beauty." Note : réussite exceptionnelle 2008 March - April 2010 : "The 2008 les Brulées was showing beautiffuly at the end of March. The nose is deep, pure and classy, as it offers up scents of black rasberries, dark berries, espresso, woodsmoke, great minerally soil tones, fresh herbs, duck and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, fullbodied, pure and black fruity, with tangy acids, beautiful focus, plenty of firm, ripe tannins and excellent length and grip on the complex and soil-driven finish. A stellar bottle in the making." Note : 93+ John Gilman (View from the Cellar) January (from a.70 ha parcel, most of which are also 70+ year old vines). Not surprisingly, this is more elegant and refined than the Clos Rognets with moderate oak influence tussling somewhat against the pretty, layered and highly spiced red berry fruit and violet aromas that dissolve into delicious and impressively concentrated flavors that are more refined and very pure, all wrapped in a rich, full and sweet finish of outstanding length. A quintessential Vosne but one with power and punch Note : January (from a.70 ha parcel, most of which are also 70+ year old vines). 3 March - April Good deep red. Sexy, inviting nose combines cherry, minerals and coffee. Silky and suave on entry, then very ripe but vibrant and juicy in the middle palate, with a mineral pungency leavening the wine's sweetness. Wonderfully tactile, energetic premier cru with superb length. But this is also thoroughly ripe: Meo notes that the ph is not particularly low for (note from webmaster: while at the Estate for this tasting, Mr Tanzer made a video interview of Mr MÈo - you can view it here) Note : janv 2010 : "Le Vosne-Roamnée "Aux Brûlées", vient d'une parcelle qui possède le même type de terrain que le Richebourg et qui a été plantée dans les années 30. Avec de petits rendements, cette vigne donne un vin élégant, précis, avec un superbe fruit et beaucoup de caractère. La Tribune 2007 January (from a.70 ha parcel, most of which are also 70+ year old vines). A strikingly fresh, ripe and expressive nose combines elegant blue and red pinot fruit, cassis, plum and Asian spice hints before sliding seamlessly into wonderfully pure and transparent medium plus weight flavors underpinned by a firm tannic spine that is itself buffered by seemingly buckets of sap. This is tightly focused today but I estimate that it should come into its prime drinking window in 8 to 10 years Note : Mar/Apr 09 - Medium red, a bit less saturated than the Cros Parantoux. Totally closed nose hints at spicy oak. Then sweeter in the mouth than the Cros Parantoux, with a distinctly opulent texture to the plum and berry flavors. Finishes fine-grained and subtle, if without quite the class of the Cros Parantoux. Note : March - April Good full, bright medium red. High-toned, perfumed aromas of black raspberry and coffee. Wonderfully sweet, deep and fresh, with a distinctly aromatic quality to its black raspberry and spice flavors. Best today on the back end, which features suave, sweet tannins and lovely lingering perfume. This cuvee has been elevated to a higher level since Meo notes that it now includes 10% replanted vines that were selected to give riper fruit. This new component may be adding sugar to the blend and giving the wine a more voluptuous texture. (note from webmaster: while at the Estate for this tasting, Mr Tanzer made a video interview of Mr Méo - you can view it here) Note : Jan 08 - (from a.70 ha parcel, most of which are also 70+ year old vines). A discreet touch of wood frames the wonderfully seductive and intensely spicy character that adds real breadth and depth to the mostly black berry fruit notes though plum and currant notes appear as well, the latter of which can also be found on the rich, generous and full-bodied flavors that are beautifully balanced on the classy, pure, velvety and dusty finish where the tannins are also firm but quite fine. A stunner of a wine as this is really quite sexy and very Vosne. In a word, impressive Note : Mar/Apr 08 - Full ruby-red color. Very suave aromas of cassis, blackberry, minerals, bitter chocolate and sexy oak. Fine-grained and subtly sweet; this boasts terrific, almost liqueur-like ripeness but also a tension
4 that's less obvious in some of the foregoing samples. Shows a chocolatey richness and a creamy texture reminiscent of a 2005, but the coolness of the site gives this finesse. Finishes sweet and long, with very suave tannins. Note : Mar/Apr 09 - Very good deep red. Black fruits, licorice, dark chocolate and sweet oak on the very ripe nose. Large-scaled and compellingly sweet, with wonderfully ripe, sappy dark berry flavors conveying a chewy impression of solidity. A very ripe 2006 whose solid tannic backbone and excellent persistence suggest that it will evolve slowly. If you can't wait to taste this, give it time in a decanter first. Note : 94 Sept 08 : Vin solaire, tanins veloutés et serrés. Note : 17,5/ July 2008 : A touch of wood influence combines with the superbly complex and remarkably primary deep black fruit nose that is positively kaleidoscopic in its range of spices that continue onto the super rich, even opulent flavors that ooze dry extract yet this tightens up instantly on the finish and becomes borderline austere. There is real muscle and punch here and while the nose is ultra refined, the flavor profile runs toward the robust. Incredibly impressive potential but this is clearly a wine for the patient Note : 95 Mar/Apr 07 - Bright ruby-red. Highly complex, sappy aromas of black raspberry, violet, graphite and minerals. Silky-sweet in the mouth, but terrific precision and energy to the dark fruit and mineral flavors give the wine a distinct light touch. Finishes with explosive length and thrust. This relatively cool site ripened spectacularly in Note : Mar/Apr 08 - Saturated bright ruby-red. Knockout nose combines black raspberry, licorice, minerals, meat and smoke. Large-scaled and impressively dense, with superb energy to the dark fruit, licorice, mineral, spice and game flavors. The explosive finish is like an avalanche over the palate, driving out everything in its wake. Substantial ripe tannins are hidden by complex finishing flavors of red fruits, smoked meat and leather. For all its soil-driven wildness, this sappy, extract-rich wine is quite pristine. Should be a monumental bottle by Note : 95(+?) 2004 Mar/Apr 07 - Good deep red. Sappy, pure aromas of black cherry and minerals. A step up in sweetness and fleshiness from the foregoing samples; generous, pliant and broad wine, with lovely floral lift to its intense cherry and raspberry flavors. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and lovely lingering sweetness of fruit.
Reduced aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, leather and fresh blood. Then very ripe, lush and suave in the mouth, with superb breadth and a liqueur-like quality without being overly sweet. Finishes very long and juicy, with ripe tannins and good grip. Meo says the alcohol here is on the low side in the context of the vintage. Distinctly more refined than the Corton that preceded it. A very good showing. Note : Jan 04 - (from a.70 ha parcel, most of which are also 70 year old vines). The character here is completely different as this is alluring and seductive with its spicy Asian spice box nose and exuberant black fruit aromas and big, robust, muscular flavors that are remarkably open. The incredibly persistent finish has a really lovely texture and the firm structure is almost entirely buried and buffered by the massive extract. This is incredibly impressive Note : Mar/Apr 05 - Bright ruby-red. Knockout nose combines black raspberry, espresso, mocha, leather, game and a strong minerality. Fat, silky and sweet; mouthfilling without being at all heavy, thanks to the wine's solid underlying structure. Then very long and fine-grained on the back end, with rather strict tannins contributing to the impression of grip. I'd give this terrific wine at least eight or ten years in the cellar. Note : 93(+?) 2001 Jan 04 - Wonderfully elegant, generous, full and richly fruited nose that leads to muscular, indeed almost robust flavors that display excellent precision and a decided linear quality. By contrast, the finish is sweet and sappy with marvelous depth and outstanding length. The harmony of the various elements is really impressive and there is solid mid-palate punch. I very much like this and it has terrific potential Note : Octobre 08 - À peine évolué, le 1999 est d'un équilibre souverain, avec le raffinement suprême des grands vins de Vosne.
