You will need the Communication Type code when you install the UPS Monitor Support Software on your system, as described later in this document. The first part of this document contains information on constructing the cable connecting the UPS (Uninterruptible Power System) to the serial port on the computer, as well as information on how to configure and use the UPS monitoring software on your AMOS based 680X0 computer. Followng that, it describes the screen displays you may see while using the UPS Monitoring software. This document describes software procedures written for the experienced Alpha Micro Service Technician, so if you do not feel comfortable performing the procedures discussed in the following pages, please contact your Alpha Micro Dealer or the Alpha Micro Technical Assistance Center for help.
5 Page 2 UPS Monitor Software User s Guide 2.0 EXTERNAL UPS TO COMPUTER INTERFACE CABLE Before you can use the UPS monitoring software program, you need to install the cable connecting the UPS system to the serial port on the computer. All new UPS systems have the serial communications port on the back panel, labeled RS-232C. The cable for most UPS units is made with two male DB-9 connectors. It connects between the female DB-9 connector on the UPS rear panel and any compatible serial port on the computer. Be sure the cable is shielded and is terminated on the shell of the connector. This section describes cables connecting the UPS to a serial port on your computer. See the next section, "Switch Contact Port Cabling," for information on constructing a cable to use the port labeled "UPS Port" on the back of many Alpha Micro computers. There are three possible cable configurations: The first is for UPS units purchased between December 1989 and December The second is for units purchased since December 1991, except for Series 1400+, 1400S+, and 1400XL+. The third cable configuration is for all Series 1400+,1400S+ and 1400XL+ units. Make sure you use a DB-9 connector hood with a metallized shell. This allows the drain wires in the connector cable to make a good electrical contact with the metal shell in the connector. All UPS units purchased between December 1989 and December 1991 use the cable configuration shown below. ALPHA MICRO UPS SERIAL MDB-9 MDB-9 ^ RxD 2 < < 2 TxD RTS 5 > > 4 CTS TxD 3 > > 3 RxD DTR 9 > > 6 DSR CTS 4 < < 5 RTS GND GND Shell-----shield------Shell
6 UPS Monitor Software User s Guide Page 3 The cable diagram shown below is for UPS units purchased in January of 1992 or later. The manufacturer of the serial board reversed the RTS and CTS signals, which are used for handshaking with the Alpha Micro computer. This port is for a connection to the Switch Contact interface of the UPS, which is normally labeled either CN20 or Remote Contacts. This is not a serial port and cannot run the UPS Serial Monitor software. However, you can access the switch contact port using the UPSTAT.LIT program in [7,43] (see below). AMOS 1.4C and 2.2C and later monitors will automatically use the switch contact port to disable write caching when you have a power failure and low battery condition. When AC power returns, the switch contact port will inform the monitor to re-enable write caching.
7 Page 4 UPS Monitor Software User s Guide Only these CPU boards support the switch contact port: AM , AM , AM , and AM This port requires a female DB-9 connector. The interface cable to use this port is as follows. The cable should be no more than 6 to 8 feet long. AMOS UPS Signal Name F-DB9 F-DB9 Common Gnd 2 < < nc Fault 3 < < 1 Fault Common Gnd 5 < < 5 Gnd On Bypass 6 < < 6 On Bypass Low Battery 7 < < 7 Low Battery On Line 8 < < 8 On Line AC Fail 9 < < 9 AC Fail (no) The UPSTAT Command While it is not part of the UPS Serial Monitor Software, UPSTAT.LIT can also tell you the status of your UPS. If you have a cable connecting the UPS switch contact port to your CPU (as described above), typing UPSTAT RETURN from AMOS command level will display one of these codes: Status Code UPSTAT Message 40 UPS normal,. 41 UPS is in bypass. Please turn on the run switch. 42 UPS inverter on; AC power failure detected. 44 UPS inverter on; batteries low. Two minutes of power remaining! 46 UPS inverter on; AC power failure; batteries low. Two minutes of power left! 48 UPS fault detected. 4F UPS status cable not installed 0 This CPU does not have a UPS status port. The above status codes are also sent to the system front panel display. 3.0 CONFIGURING THE UPS SOFTWARE The UPS monitoring software is compatible with AMOS/L 1.3D and AMOS/32 1.0D and later software releases. All versions of AMOS 2.X are compatible with the UPS monitoring software. Follow the steps below to isntall and configure the software.
8 UPS Monitor Software User s Guide Page 5 1. First, log into the system operator account. Type: LOG DSK0:[1,2] RETURN 2. Use the appropriate command to copy the UPS software from the release media. For example, to download UPS software from the CD-ROM, type: COPY=ACDxx:*.*[] RETURN where xx is the CD-ROM logical containing the UPS software release. To verify all files downloaded correctly, use the following command: VERIFY UPS176.DIR RETURN Make sure all files verify without error. 3. In UPS Monitor software version 1.3(176) or later, the UPSLOG.RUN file is compatible with AlphaBASIC 1.4. If you are using a version of BASIC other than 1.4, type these commands to recompile the source file and make a RUN file compatible with your computer s version of BASIC: LOG DSK0:[7,43] RETURN COMPIL UPSLOG RETURN You can also compile UPSLOG.BAS for use with AlphaBASIC PLUS. To compile the file for AlphaBASIC PLUS compatibility, type these commands: LOG DSK0:[7,43] RETURN COMPLP UPSLOG.BAS RETURN 4. The next step is to generate the the BCAST.JOB file. Enter this command: JOBLST RETURN You next need to edit the BCAST.JOB file and remove the jobs which do not need power fail notification. These job names would typically be SPOOL, TASK, VTSER, NETSER, LOGGER, UPSMON, ABMON, FLIPxx, FLPCTL, or any other jobs which you want to exclude from the notification process. Rather than remove the job or jobs completely from the BCAST.JOB file, you can insert a semicolon (;) in front of any job you want to exclude from power fail notification. 5. You need to add an ERSATZ statement supporting the UPS monitoring software to the file where you have your ersatz devices defined. (This file is specified by an ERSATZ statement in your system initialization command file. It is often called ERSATZ.INI.) Add this statement to the file: UPS:=DSK0:[7,43]
9 Page 6 UPS Monitor Software User s Guide Next, you must modify the system initialization command file to define the serial connection between the UPS and the computer s serial port, and to load the monitoring software into system memory. This is described in the next section. 3.1 Modifying the System Initialization Command File NEVER modify your AMOSL or AMOS32 initialization command file directly. Always make a copy of the file and modify the copy! To copy the file, log into DSK0:[1,4] (the SYS: account), then type one of these commands: or COPY UPSTST.INI=AMOS32.INI RETURN COPY UPSTST.INI=AMOSL.INI RETURN Now, you can use AlphaVUE to modify the copy of the initialization file. Type: VUE UPSTST.INI RETURN Add the following statements to the UPSTST.INI file: :T JOBS 21 JOBALC UPSMON ; add 1 more job ; add UPSMON job if background monitoring is desired TRMDEF UPS,AM355=1:1200,TELTYP,100,100,100 ; ADD UPS serial port TRMDEF UPSBAK,PSEUDO,NULL,80,80,80 ; For optional UPS background ; monitoring only. ERSATZ ERSATZ.INI SYSTEM UPSLNK.SYS/N/A SYSTEM UPSLNK.SYS/N/B SYSTEM UPSLNK.SYS/N/C SYSTEM UPSLNK.SYS/N/S ; new ersatz statement, UPS:=DSK0:[7,43] ; add this system statement for 500va, 750va, 1Kva, 1.5kva ; add this system statement for 3Kva & 5Kva units. ; add this system statement for 1400 series ; add this system statement for 1400 S Plus series ; make sure only ONE of the UPSLNK ; statements is added to the system statements. SETJOB UPSMON,UPSBAK,100K,VER MEMORY 0 ; bring up this background job for remote ; monitoring of the UPS system. This is ; not always required. (Optional) ; end of file. SETJOB is not supported under AMOS 1.3X releases. Instead, you must use an ATTACH statement:
10 UPS Monitor Software User s Guide Page 7 ATTACH UPSBAK,UPSMON KILL UPSMON FORCE UPSMON MEMORY 100K LOG DSK0:[7,43] CMD: UPSBAK (Make sure there is a blank line here) You can now test the installation. Make sure no one else is using the computer, then use the MONTST command from the OPR: account to reboot your system using the UPSTST.INI file: MONTST AMOSL, UPSTST.INI RETURN or MONTST AMOS32, UPSTST.INI RETURN Make sure the computer boots without error. After you are satisfied the UPSTST.INI file works correctly, copy the UPSTST.INI file to the correct name for your system initialization command file using one of these commands: COPY AMOSL.INI=UPSTST.INI RETURN or COPY AMOS32.INI=UPSTST.INI RETURN 4.0 EXECUTING THE UPS PROGRAM The UPS monitoring software requires 100KB as a minimum memory requirement if RUN.LIT is not loaded into system memory. It requires only 65KB of memory if RUN.LIT is loaded into system memory. To execute the UPS monitor program. Type: UPSMON RETURN 1. If this is the first time you have run the UPSMON program, a screen display containing all the supported UPS devices will be displayed:

14 UPS Monitor Software User s Guide Page 11 This option lets you decrease system overhead by selecting a longer time delay. The longer the time delay, the less system overhead the program consumes. However, when you select a longer time delay, the program takes longer to recognize a power failure has occurred. If a short power failure takes place, it will not be logged in the UPSDAT.LOG file. Select the letter (A through E) for the time delay you want. 5. Once you ve finished these steps, type X from the main Options menu or press CTRL / C to abort the program. The next time you execute UPSMON, the program options you selected will automatically be loaded into the UPSLOG program. 6. If you want to have a background task run this program, change the system initialization command file and force the UPSMON job to execute UPSBAK.CMD. This command file will start up the UPS monitor software and record the results into a file called UPSDAT.LOG in the UPS: account. The UPSDAT.LOG file, which contains a snapshot of current UPS status values, can be viewed, printed, or typed. This completes the software installation. If you have any questions on how to run the program after it has been installed, you can read the program s online help file by typing: HELP UPSMON RETURN You can also see the help file by typing H from the UPSMON option menu. If any users on your system have SET GUARD activated, power fail status messages will not be broadcasted to their jobs. 5.0 UPS SCREEN DISPLAYS The UPS monitoring software can generate a number of screen displays. The following pages show samples of each of the possible displays. 5.1 The Main Screen Display and Options Window This is the normal display produced by the UPSLOG program.

For C or S model types, you can select when you want to turn off the inverter after a power failure. This can be either a specific number of minutes after a power failure or at a specific UPS DC battery voltage. Because of the age and charge status of the batteries, the length of time the UPS can support your computer during a power failure will vary depending on the load. If you had a power failure after a UPS fault condition, the error would be logged to the UPSDAT.LOG file and then the computer would die. The program will log all faults in the UPSLOG.DAT file and display the last data available. All possible fault conditions are shown in the above window. If any of these conditions occur, call your Alpha Micro dealer or the Alpha Micro Technical Assistance Center. 6.0 THE UPSDAT.LOG FILE As mentioned above, the UPS Serial Monitor software records all UPS faults and power failures it detects into a file called UPSDAT.LOG in the UPS: account. The UPS software also writes its current status values to this file each time you start the program or change configuration, and on a regular basis while the program is running (the logging period you set using option B determines how often the values are recorded). UPSDAT.LOG is a text file; you can view or print it as you would any other file. UPSDAT.LOG continues to grow as long as you let it. You should clear or erase this file at least every one to two months. If you do not, it will reduce the amount of space available on DSK0:, and it may eventually affect system performance, since it takes longer to log to a large file. If you want a continuing record of UPS activity, print the file before erasing it.
