3 What is Insulin Pump Therapy? Insulin Pump Therapy is a treatment option for people with type1 diabetes that aims to closely mimic the normal insulin delivery of the pancreas, allowing for more predictable and tighter blood glucose control. What is an insulin pump and how does it work? An insulin pump is a small portable device. Fast acting insulin is delivered via an infusion set which includes a short soft tube (called a cannula) that sits comfortably under the skin. Your diabetes specialist will show you how to change your infusion set every 2-3 days. Basal insulin is delivered regularly 24 hours a day. The basal rate is meant to keep glucose levels within a desired range outside of meals. A bolus dose delivers insulin specifically for meals, at any time. This dose is to account for carbohydrates consumed and can also bring blood glucose levels back to a specific target range. The pump can easily be disconnected and connected. It can be taken off for short periods such as bathing, swimming and during contact sport without needing to change infusion sets. The MiniMed insulin pump comes in a range of colours. It also comes in 2 sizes, depending on your daily average insulin totals. 3

4 What are the benefits of pumping? One month s comparison 4 injections a day Insulin pumping VS 120 injections 10 infusion set changes Using a pump means 90% fewer injections Get freedom from daily injections it could be the difference between taking 1440 injections per year instead of 122 site changes a year. * Lead a more flexible lifestyle eat what you want, when you want. Exercise for as long and hard as you want. Prevent hypos especially overnight, by adjusting your pump as required. Manage hormonal changes or periodic stress by adjusting your doses. Avoid major insulin adjustments for time differences with travel just re-set your pump to the new time. Stay out longer or sleep in late without the need for additional meals. What does the research say? Studies 1,2 have shown that insulin pump therapy can achieve better glucose control and reduce the number of hypos vs. multiple daily injections. Hypoglycaemic episodes: reduced up to 84% 3 In addition, insulin pump therapy can help you reduce the risk of many long-term complications 1, like: Cardiovascular damage: Reduced up to 41% Kidney damage: Reduced up to 54% Nerve damage (neuropathy): Reduced up to 60% Eye damage (retinopathy): Reduced up to 63% 4

5 If I enter my carbohydrates accurately, my blood glucose is near perfect. It s kind of like having an external pancreas. Sally Rhys-Jones, NSW 5

6 What does it cost? If you hold private health insurance covering insulin pumps, you will generally be eligible for full reimbursement of the insulin pump by your health fund. (Please consult your health fund provider for details). How can Medtronic help? If you re in the interim waiting period for private health cover benefits and would like to commence insulin pump therapy now, you may be eligible for Medtronic s Bridging the Gap loan pump program. Who is Eligible? To be eligible, individuals must: Have private health insurance policy covering insulin pumps Be diagnosed with type 1 diabetes Meet the National Diabetes Support Scheme (NDSS) criteria for insulin pump consumables ( Be under the supervision of a healthcare professional for pump therapy, e.g. Endocrinologist or Paediatrician. 7 With the pump, Harper can eat any amount of food she wants and we adjust the insulin amount to suit. She doesn t even need to have carbohydrates at every meal. Michele Skippen, mother of Harper Climo, QLD Since I ve been on the pump with Continuous Glucose Monitoring, I ve not had a hypo at all, which is just unbelieveable. It s changed my life. Brian Thompson, WA What is the Ongoing Cost of Insulin Pump Therapy? Medtronic infusion sets and reservoirs are available from the NDSS through Diabetes Australia (at an approximate monthly cost of $25). There are criteria that you must meet to be eligible for insulin pump consumables through NDSS; as well as an NDSS registration form online which needs to be signed by your Endocrinologist or Credentialed Diabetes Educator before being sent to Diabetes Australia. If you are not eligible for insulin pump consumables through the NDSS, the monthly cost for infusion sets and reservoirs will be approximately $300. Your healthcare team should advise you of the appropriate infusion set and reservoir for your pump, so that you can order insulin pump consumables through your state Diabetes Australia office. 7
