GRADUATE CERTIFICATION OF COMPETENCY IN FORENSIC INVESTIGATION THROUGH DIGITAL VISUALISATION TECHNIQUES Academy of Forensic Medical Sciences (AFMS) 117 Charterhouse Street, London EC1M AA, United Kingdom
Introduction The Graduate Certification of Competency for Forensic Investigation through Digital Visualization Techniques by Academy of Forensic Medical Sciences is designed to address the needs of application of digital visualization technology in forensic science and forensic medicine, as a coherent body of a single aim, which is to investigate and establish the cause and manner of death. Forensic visualization technology such as dactylography, facial identification, crime scene photography, crime scene reconstruction and digital autopsy, are function as tools for assisting the forensic expert to conclude with the cause and manner of death. The Graduate Certification of Competency for Forensic Investigation through Digital Visualization Techniques will enable the student to learn and appreciate the science and technology behind this emerging field in forensic, and the reasons why Forensic Visualization is getting adopted as a Best Practice in Forensic. Course Objective: The course aimed at providing the students with: Knowledge and skills in forensic visualization and its diagnostics aspect. Skills of critically evaluating and interpreting forensic evidence acquired from digital visualization techniques. Practical experience and skills for real life application in the forensic field. Course Duration and Delivery Model: Full Time, for consecutive weeks (10 working days). Competency development programme. Mode of teaching: Lectures, workshop, case study and presentation. Upon the completion of the classes, the students are required to present a case study which will be examined by the Board of Examiners (Panel of Forensic Expert). Student criteria Master in Forensic Science Post Graduate Study in Forensic Pathology Medical Examiner Forensic Pathologist Radiologist
3 Curriculum Schedule 1 Classical Autopsy A short introduction to the autopsy, a procedure performed by forensic pathologist to establish the cause and manner of death. Students will have a better understanding on the type of autopsy, the purpose of autopsy, the procedures involved, the tools used, as well as the terminology used by the forensic pathologists. A short summary of the limitations of classical autopsy. Medical Imaging in Forensic X Ray CT MRI Relevance of Medical Imaging in Forensic A short summary of history, recent and advanced medical imaging techniques applied in Forensic pathology. Digital Autopsy Technology Application of Digital Visualization Technology in the actual forensic scenario by looking at a virtual model/example of how a forensic facility which is powered by the Digital Visualization Technology function at its best. CT Protocol Post Mortem Angiography A brief summary on defining the CT protocol for the cadaver in various cases. Description of the procedure in postmortem angiography and choosing the contrast media.
3 Dead Body Management System ASCLD Guidelines Forensic Identification : Biometric, Fingerprint, Facial Recognition IAI Guideline Hands on Training Dead body management system describes the forensic dead body identification procedure utilizing various digital visualization approach and technique such as biometrics, fingerprinting, DNA profiling/ fingerprinting. Students will also be exposed to the relevance between forensic identification and medico-legal aspect of death. Crime Scene Investigation Module New Technology in Crime Scene Investigation SWGIT Guidelines Hands on Training In this session, the student will be briefed on the concept behind crime scene investigation and the use of scientific methods, physical evidence, deductive reasoning and their interrelationships to gain explicit knowledge of the series of events that surround the commission of a crime. 5 Forensic Odontology Module ABFO Guidelines New Technology in Forensic Odontology Intra-oral camera Surface Scanner, etc Hands on Training Dental identification plays a major role in identification efforts in mass casualties; Classical methods for forensic dental identification are dental periapical radiographs, bitewing films, and panoramic tomographs. However, the application of new Digital Visualizations Techniques such as Digital Odontology Software System in forensic identification allows the comparison of ante-mortem data and postmortem data of the deceased, as well age estimation through forensic algorithm.
Digital Visualization Digital Autopsy Software System Hands-on Training The objective in this session is to highlight the application of Digital Visualisation Techniques, modalities, standard of visualisation technology in forensic, and how the images can be introduced as evidence in court of law. The session also describes the different features and functionalities of Digital Autopsy Software System, which is used in the visualisation of 3D digital body for the purpose of establishing cause of death. Students will have the chance of getting hands on experience in using the software system to conduct Digital Autopsy on interesting cases.. Case Study 7 Case Study 8 Digital Post Mortem Report 8 ACP Guidelines Hands on training This session focus on the best practices and guidelines in post mortem reporting according to standard of American College of Physician. Digital Autopsy as Evidence in Court of Law DICOM Standards Scientific Working Group on Imaging technology (SWGIT). This session describes the submission of the Digital Autopsy report in the court of law with a brief summary of DICOM standard. 5
9 Field Training in Digital Autopsy Facility at Hospital Kuala Lumpur 8 Registration Scanning of Dead Body Digital Autopsy Report Students will be visiting a model Digital Autopsy Facility to understand the real operational scenario of the application of DVT in actual forensic settings 10 Group Discussion : Case Exercise, Q&A Student is required to research on a case study on Digital Visualization Technology related topics and present the findings to an expert panel. The Graduate Certificates of Competency will be given to the students upon successful completion of the presentation of the case study. Certification Renowned guest speakers from various schools of field and expertise (Radiologist, Forensic Pathologist and Lawyer) will be giving a talk on their respective view (from their area of expertise) towards application of Digital Visualization Technology in Forensic, followed by issuing the competency certificate Reference ASLD Guidelines IAI Guidelines ABFO Guidelines Interpol Guidelines ACP Guidelines DICOM Standards SWGIT Guidelines
