1 Using CSI s Web Messaging System: Imail URL: mail.csi.cuny.edu Preferences: General User Settings Full Name: The name in the box is the name that will appear in the recipients from field. Show message preview pane: In order to prevent viruses, please remove the check mark from this option. Change Password Passwords must be a minimum of three alphanumeric characters, cannot include spaces, and cannot exceed thirty characters. Composing Default message encoding: Unicode (UTF-8). Choose this character set for multi-language mail. Default new message style: HTML Select if you wish to compose your message using features such as bold, italic, underlining, multiple fonts, multiple colors, bullets, numbering, etc. Open compose in: Select whether you want the compose window to open in the same window or a new window. 3 Creating Address Books An address book contains all of your public and personal contacts, and can be accessed from the left menu pane. Add a contact or group: In the Contacts menu bar, click New Contact. The Add New Contact page opens. Enter the contact information, then click Save and Close. Note: You can also add a new contact or multiple contacts by selecting the Save Recipients as Contacts option in Preferences, and then entering them as recipients in a new message; or, click on the Add to Contacts link in the From area of a new message. Contacts will appear in your address book in alphabetical order from left to right. Selecting New Group from the Contacts menu bar will allow you to add groups or distribution lists to your contact folder. Enter a name for your group (distribution list) in the text box labeled Group Name. You can add contacts to a group by using the > or >> buttons or by selecting the Add a New Address link. Groups will appear in your address book in alphabetical order from left to right.

4 Creating Folders & Subfolders Select the area in which you want to create a folder, i.e.: INBOX, Sent, another folder, etc. Click New Folder on the left menu pane. Type the name of the folder in the text box and click add. Folders will appear in alphabetic order within the area you selected. To rename a folder click on the folder and then click "Rename" on the left menu pane. To delete a folder click on the folder and then click "Delete" on the left menu pane. Please note: You cannot delete a folder if it contains a subfolder. In order to delete the folder you will first need to delete any subfolders it contains. Deleting a folder will permanently delete all of the messages within it. To empty the contents of a folder: Select the folder whose contents you want to delete. The folder name should appear on the top left of the right-hand pane; Click on Empty the <folder name> folder link on the right above the message list. Composing and Sending an The system is very similar to Outlook and Outlook Express in its ability to compose and send an . You will find shortcuts along the way to assist you with your daily activities. There are two ways to get to the compose window. 1. Select the INBOX from the left window pane and then select New from the Inbox menu bar.

5 2. Select from the left menu pain. Select Compose an from the Menu options. The compose window will appear in either a new window or the existing window, depending upon your preferences. Using the menu bar will help you send a message, cancel a message, save a draft to return to later, or attach documents to the . Note: If you are sending an to a person that has a CSI Imail account, you only have to enter the person s Userid. The system gives you the ability to send s in different fonts, sizes, colors and formatting. To attach a file to an , select attachments from the menu bar, browse for the file, and select Insert File. To delete a file from an , select the red x next to the file name.

6 Searching for an To search for an , enter the criteria in the search box and select "Go". To do an advanced search, click on the magnifying glass. The advanced search window will open. Type in your criteria, then click on the Search Mail button. The search option will tell you the total number of s that meet your criteria and display them in the preview window. Filtering SPAM 1. Select Rules from the left menu pane. Select New from the menu bar. Give the rule a name that you can refer to for future reference. 2. Define the conditions, i.e.: From, Subject, Sender, To, Body, Header. The more specific you are the better chance the system will be able to filter your the way you want it to. 3. Select the comparison i.e., the contains specific text you want to filter. 4. Type in the text you want the system to search for. 5. Determine the action you want the system to perform, i.e.: Move to a specific mailbox (you will need specify the folder you want to place the in), Forward (you will need to specify the you want to forward to), Delete, Copy (you will need to specify the you want to copy to), Bounce. NOTE: You can use this method to automatically manage your s in addition to filtering out unwanted SPAM.
