3 rd HMRC Forum on R&D leading to the Commercialisation of Marine Renewables Marine Renewables Infrastructure Network Linking European test infrastructure to accelerate commercialisation Mark Healy, HMRC MARINET Project Manager
The Problem Enormous potential but... no commercial deployments yet Haste to deploy -> no structured testing -> failures => Current designs and O&M -> not designed/tested for cost competitiveness => Technology development requires R&D at progressive scales in specialised facilities Facility access costs and cross-border funding availability are significant barriers Europe hosts a full suite of facilities to test at all scales but these are largely working independently of each other, and sometimes duplicating research
Solving problems MARINET What is it? Initiative to coordinate Europe s marine renewable energy test infrastructure (facilities) Network of world-class testing facilities at all scales Funded by the EC (FP7 Programme) Infrastructures coordinated to provide streamlined access avoid research duplication conduct focussed R&D Aim is to accelerate the commercialisation of marine renewable energy
MARINET in numbers 29 world-class research institutions 12 countries 42 test facilities for: Wave energy Tidal energy Offshore Wind Energy & Environmental Data Cross-cutting issues (electrical, moorings etc.) 48 month duration: April 2011 March m programme of which 9m from EC
Who is involved? 28 Partners 27 EC, 1 ICPC (Brazil) Coordinator: UCC-HMRC
What does MARINET offer? Facility Access costs paid by EC Contribution towards travel costs
Facility Access: Test technology at one of the 42 facilities at no cost 42 test infrastructures providing EC-funded access Facility costs are paid by the EC Open to all, and is aimed at users outside the network companies of any size, research groups etc. Facilities available at all scales
Facility Access: Test technology at one of the 42 facilities at no cost

How to apply for access Organised through regular calls for access Apply at Eligibility Participants must be working in Europe (or country associated to FP7) Facility accessed must be outside your home country. Conditions Must produce a publishable report for website but IP/confidentiality is fully protected
More than just free access Organised industry networking User workshops possible collaboration leading to joint ventures Common-test standards To move seamlessly from one facility to the next Coordinated research To improve infrastructures, technologies and techniques Funded training Courses in research and testing Funded training Coordinated research Facility Access costs paid by EC Common test standards Contribution towards travel costs Organised industry networking
What MARINET aims to achieve Provide 700 weeks of free access, 300 projects, 800 users Provide Shop Window and streamlined access to Europe s wave, tidal & offshore wind testing facilities Coordinated marine renewable energy R&D at all scales, avoiding duplication. Facilitate long term research strategy & future infrastructure requirements. Accelerate the commercialisation of marine renewable energy
