A Note Concerning the Cork Bible Institute This study course is intended to be used in conjunction with the Cork Bible Institute and contains a Final Exam that can be applied towards credit in the Institute. If you want your participation in this course to be part of an overall course accreditation, please inform Pastor Ledbetter and he will make sure your records are retained. Your attendance will be recorded, and there will be a class project for you to complete by the end of the ten week course. Class Project: To pass this course, you will need to write a two to three page report on how a believer can use the truths of Ephesians to defeat any three big modern day spiritual struggles. I am looking for you to identify three key areas of modern life that most Christians fail in, and how God in the Book of Ephesians has the answer, and how you would encourage someone to apply those truths to make them free. 3 Key Verse: Ephesians 1:6 Our Possessions - The Believer s Blessed Life Ephesians 1 I. Introduction - a little of the background. A. The book of Ephesians (along with Philippians and Colossians), was written by the Apostle Paul while in Prison in Rome. B. The city of Ephesus was one of the great cities of Asia Minor, a Roman capital, a wealthy commercial centre where a vast harbour invited world trade. It was also the centre for the worship of the goddess Diana, where a temple to this goddess is noted as one of the seven ancient wonders of the world. C. Paul took his helpers, Aquila and Priscilla and made a brief visit to Ephesus while he was on his second church-planting journey through Turkey. 1. He left Aquila and Priscilla there (Acts 18:18-28) to work at building up this new church. 2. Later, he returned to Ephesus on his third missionary journey (Acts 19) and remained there for three years (Acts 20:31). 3. He began in the synagogue and was rejected, so he moved into the school of a teacher named Tyrannus (Acts 19:9) where he taught for two years. The effect of his ministry had such an impact, that it changed the national economy there. Those who had practiced witchcraft turned to Christ. This cost the silversmiths their jobs so they fought back, since they were the ones who made money off of the goddesses of Diana. This caused a citywide riot, thus causing Paul to have to leave Ephesus (Acts 20:17-35). D. The book of Ephesians is meant to instruct believers about the importance of the church is in the mind of God and what it ought to be in the practice to the believers. We learn that the church is one with Christ: 1. It is the body of which He is the Head (Eph 1:22,23); 2. It is the building of which He is the Chief Corner Stone (Eph 2:20-22); 3. And she is the bride of whom Christ is the Bridegroom (Eph 5:25-32). E. The key thought in chapter one is the blessings that we have as Christians. These are spiritual blessings because we are in Christ (vs 3). Paul informs us that each Person of the Godhead (Trinity) has blessed us. He then prays that we could understand these blessings and the power that they can be in our lives (vs 15-23). I. BLESSINGS FROM PAUL (EPHESIANS 1:1,2). A. His Authority (vs 1a). 1. To be an apostle meant to be one directly chosen by God for service. (See Acts 9:1-18). 2. Paul became the last of 12 apostles that Scripture records who were...of Jesus Christ by the will of God. This statement reveals the official character of the letter. An apostle of Jesus Christ was to preach the gospel (1Cor 1:17), teach and pray (Acts 6:4), perform miracles (2Cor 12:12), build leaders for the church (Acts 14:23), write the Word of God (Eph 1:1), and speak foundational doctrine that would be transferred from one church congregation to another (Acts 2:42). B. His Audience (vs 1b). 1. Specifically to the saints at Ephesus, and to the faithful who are in Christ Jesus. 2. Nine times in this brief letter, Paul addresses his readers as saints (Eph 1:1,15,18; 2:19; 3:8,18; 4:12; 5:3; 6:18). 3. These saints were alive, not dead. Some religions teach that a person becomes a saint after they have been dead for a while. The Book of Ephesians Page 3
C. His Admonition (vs 2). Grace and peace. Grace is undeserved favour and peace is the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and content with whatever earthly lot is given, of whatever sort that is. This is not a state of grace, but a constant supply of help from God (Heb 4:16). What a prayer for someone to pray! D. His Adoration, Worship (vs 3). God the Father is here seen enriching the believer with spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ. 1. The Source of our Blessings. God the Father! a. God delights in giving riches to those who trust in His Son! When you are born again into God s family, you are born rich! b. Note Eph 3:8, Paul calls this the unsearchable riches of Christ. c. This includes God s grace (1:7; 2:7); God s salvation (1:13); God s glory (1:18; 3:16); God s mercy (2:4); God s protection (6:11); God s guidance and so much more! Our Heavenly Father is not poor; He is rich and He has made us rich in His Son! 2. The Scope of our Blessings. We have all spiritual blessings - God gives us everything we need for a successful, satisfying Christian life. Note: It is the spiritual, not the material that is important! 3. The Sphere of our Blessings, in heavenly places in Christ. a. People in this world are interested in the earthly things and cannot find lasting satisfaction, while believers find sole satisfaction in heavenly things. b. Believers know that when their life ends on earth, it continues on in heaven. The unbeliever doesn t have life at all. Our physical blessings are yet future (1Cor 15:49-55) c. We are seated in heaven right now in Jesus Christ (Eph 2:6) d. We are present before God s throne (1Jn 4:17) e. Stop living like this is all there is to our lives (2Cor 4:16-18) 4. These are all things worth meditating on! II. BLESSINGS FROM THE FATHER (EPHESIANS 1:3-6). A. He Has Chosen Us (vs 3,4). 1. This is the wonderful doctrine of Election. a. Election is difficult to explain and there are many arguments over this doctrine. b. Example: We have elections all the time where people choose their leaders. But you can t choose someone who has not made themselves on the ballet so-to-speak c. The simple truth is, salvation begins with God and not with man. Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you (John 15:16). 1) God chose us before He created the universe. 2) He actually chose EVERYBODY all His creation to be with Him but not everyone chooses Him d. So, God chooses the whole world, but waits for us to choose Him like a marriage proposal! e. Summarize: 1) God chose before time started that all His creation would be with Him 2) Man opted out chose to go his own way 3) God foreknew man would do that and made a way for man to return through the Lamb 4) Man rejects that way, and instead attempts at his own righteousness loses out on reconciliation 5) But those that do accept (choose) Christ s way of salvation, get reconciled to God 6) These are elected because THEY have elected Jesus as their Saviour! We have to come through the door (John 10:7-10; 14:6) 2. Foreknowledge does not mean foreordained a. No one is in Christ until they are born again. At birth we are all in Adam (1Cor 15:22) b. Until you get born again, you are an alien, alone in the world, the children of wrath, dead in trespasses and sins, etc. 1) God knows everything past and future (Acts 15:18; Ps 90:1,2; Isa 46:9,10) 2) The fact is, God wouldn t be God if He didn t know who would and who wouldn t get saved, yet, there is man s free will to either accept or reject God s Son as Saviour! Note: 2Peter 3:9. 3) God s foreknowledge does not mean that he makes things happen like he wants, but rather that He just knows how they will turn out, and even though he meddles and adjusts world events, He leaves the final choices up to us. 3. Predestination means our destiny is settled not our hearts! The Book of Ephesians Page 4
a. In Calvin s theology, the heart of a man is forcibly changed to accompany their destination b. But the Bible is much clearer: 1) From the moment of conception, a person s destiny is FIXED for hell 2) But, at the new birth, that destiny is CHANGED (Jn 5:24; 1Jn 3:14) to heaven 3) And it is forever fixed now! 4. Jesus Christ is the key He is the door you enter to become blessed. He is the medium through which all blessings are given. If you try to get those blessing another way, you are a thief and a robber (John 10:10) 5. What God has chosen for our lives to be: a. Holy clean, forgiven b. Without blame before Him every wrong made right c. In Love no longer in fear B. He has Adopted Us (vs 5). 1. Predestination is misunderstood and refers primarily to what God does for saved people. a. Nowhere in the Bible is it taught that people are predestined to go to Hell. b. The word means fixed destiny, not forced actions 1) Predestination means fixed destination of heaven for the believer 2) Predetermined means fixed control of events. For example, the Lord s crucifixion was predetermined to happen (Acts 4:25-28), but what the people did, was their own choice (Mt 26:24) 2. Our adoption (vs 5) refers to God accepting us fully as a mature son who has come of age and takes on adult responsibilities. (See Gal 4:1-7; Rom 8:22,23). All this even though we are immature, and maybe very young in the Lord still! 3. Truth: You do not get into God s family by adoption, you get into God s family by regeneration (John 3:1-18; 1Pet 1:22-25). But when you come into God s family, you are received AS a full grown son, with all privileges! You don t have to prove ANYTHING to be accepted as God s son (see next)! C. He Has Accepted Us (vs 6). Because of the sacrifice of God s Son, God has fully accepted us. His Son s perfect life, and substitutionary death allows God to see us differently than He sees those without Christ. 1. This is more than just being loved, or beloved: a. Israel is beloved (Rom 11:28) even though lost b. The world is loved of God even though lost 2. In the beloved is referring to being included in the closeness of the Trinity (2Pet 1:17) a. God accepts Craig Ledbetter into what was a very close knit family called the Trinity b. I am a joint-heir - equal in inheritance from God, just as Jesus Christ is (Rom 8:16,17) 3. If I am accepted by God Almighty: a. I can pray boldly b. I can decide confidently like a prince c. I can worship lively d. I can fall often and get up constantly e. I can trust limitlessly f. I can rest easily g. I can work faithfully h. I can wrestle against sin and Satan victoriously as more than a conqueror i. I can care passionately (Col 3:12) D. Oh that I would just begin to PRAISE HIM for the GREATNESS (glory) of His GRACE (His allowance of ME into His presence)! All because of Jesus! III. BLESSINGS FROM GOD THE SON (EPHESIANS 1:7-12). A. He has Redeemed Us (vs 7a). 1. He rescued us from the condemnation of our sin. Compare Rom 3:24; Gal 3: To redeem means to purchase and set free by paying the full price. Redemption is the paying off of the price which is paid for a prisoner of war (a slave); the ransom, or stipulated purchase-money (like a mortgage), which being paid, the captive is set free. The word used here is then employed to denote liberation from bondage, captivity, or judgment of any kind. 3. A slave could be set free by his owner very rare! 4. Or, he could be bought by ANOTHER owner! That s what Jesus did for us. He paid the price with His own The Book of Ephesians Page 5
blood (1Pet 1:18ff). 5. This verse is chopped-up in new versions! No blood! Yet see Heb 9:22 B. He has Forgiven Us (vs 7b). 1. Forgiveness is the act of grace to forever be freed from the guilt and penalty of his sins. 2. The freeing of a guilty from their responsibility for a past hurt or crime! 3. He forgave ALL sins (Acts 13:38-39) C. He has Revealed God s Will to Us (vs 8-10). 1. The word abounded speaks of overflowing. There is SO MUCH to God s perfect will 2. Wisdom speaks of spiritual insight and perception which comes from God. God s plans are so brilliant 3. Prudence is the practical use of that wisdom. Carefulness not haphazard, or thrown together 4. The mystery of his will is the revelation of God s plan that was hidden from human reason before now (Rom 16:25). 5. According to HIS good pleasure not ours! a. This is THE Key part of God s will! b. Everything good in our life is first purposed IN Him, and accomplished BY Him! 6. In the dispensation or fulness of times (way out in the future), all of things and events in Heaven and earth, life and troubles, and all the saved people of every dispensation will be harmonized together in Christ. D. He has Made Us an Inheritance (vs 11,12). 1. God has not only given us an inheritance in Christ (1:11; 1Pet 1:3,4), 2. But He has made us an inheritance for Christ. We are His eternal treasure like a bride is to her husband! 3. We should be to the praise of HIS glory our lives should be a praise of His workmanship! IV. BLESSINGS FROM GOD THE SPIRIT (EPHESIANS 1:13,14) A. He has Sealed Us (vs 13). Sealing by the Holy Spirit means: 1. A finished transaction. When official legal documents are processed, they are stamped with the official seal to signify a finished transaction. 2. Ownership. The presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives is a mark of God s ownership of us. He purchased us and put His name on us. 1Cor 6:19, Security and Protection. This is what the Roman seal did when it was placed on the tomb of Jesus (Matt 27:62-66). Because the Holy Spirit seals us (and not our best efforts), we are eternally secure! 4. Authenticity. Just the signature or seal of ownership on a letter proves its genuineness. Note Rom 8:9. And it is meant to stop anyone but the recipient from opening it! 5. Notice the path of faith: a. Ye heard the word of truth, the gospel people need to hear the Gospel b. THEN ye trusted believed people MUST believe on Jesus Christ c. And THEN ye were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit That is when God steps in and saves and secures their eternity! B. He has Given Us an Earnest (vs 14). Earnest is a fascinating word. 1. An earnest is the down payment to guarantee the final purchase of some piece of property. 2. The Holy Spirit in our lives is an earnest payment of a future inheritance 3. Redemption is God s process of paying off all our debts. That payment was the cross. And it was complete. 4. But, on top of that payment, God made a partial payment of what heaven is going to be like, by giving us just a portion of His Holy Spirit. Note Rom 8:18-23; I Jn 3: And Earnest is like when you give an engagement ring to your future fiancé. It is only the beginning, and is added to on the wedding day! V. BLESSINGS FOR THE CHURCH (EPHESIANS 1:15-23) A. This is one of Paul s Prison Prayers. (Also located in Eph 3:14-23; Phil 1:9-11; Col 1:9-12). In none of these prayers does Paul request material things. Instead, he prays for blessings for his converts for those people who had turned their back on the world, and decided to follow Jesus the Christ! B. Paul s praise. (vs 15,16). Paul gives two reasons for his thanks and prayers for the saints in Ephesus: 1. Because they had such great faith in the Lord; 2. And because they loved the saints. C. These two attributes showed this church to be a strong one. Paul knew that Satan and his followers would oppose such a church and that the strongest line of defence would be to support them with his own prayers. The Book of Ephesians Page 6
1. We often pray for sick and distressed people, but it s important to also remember to pray for those who are faithfully serving God. They are in a battle and the prayers of others are a petition for God to protect and keep them! 2. Remember Peter in Acts 12:5? It was their unceasing prayers of the church for a faithful servant that God answered which protected Peter from death. D. This prayer is for enlightenment (spiritual maturity). He prays they will realize what God has already done for them and that they might live up to these wonderful blessings and put them to work in their daily lives. E. The Prayer Itself (vs 17-23). He makes two big requests in his prayer: 1. That They Might Deeply Know God (vs 17; Jer 9:23,24). a. That believers would get to know God (Cf Matt 16:17; John 17:3) 1) Not every believer knows God intimately only factually, or casually (BIG DANGER!) 2) The greatest Christian ever said his goal in life was to know God more and better and deeper and richer and fuller, and sweeter (Philp 3:10) b. Romans 1:18-32 shows how mankind went down the following path: 1) From knowing God (we all start off knowing God is there) 2) To wilful ignorance of God (rejecting what we know and believing a lie instead) 3) To idolatry (creating our OWN gods) 4) To immorality and indecency (turning only to self and SELF worship) 5) To abandonment by God (God abandons people what a way to end it all)! c. This all began with a unwillingness to know God as Creator, Sustainer, Governor, Saviour and Judge of mankind. d. Truly knowing God means: 1) Believing what the Scriptures say 2) Accepting Jesus AS God the Father in the flesh (1John 2:23) 3) Understanding that it is all of grace that even allows some sinner to get to know Him the fact is, it is GOD who wants us to know Him (John 4:23,24) 4) Letting the Holy Spirit teach you about God (Jn 15:26) 5) Accepting the fact that God s ways are NOT our ways (Isa 55:8) 2. That They Might Understand God (Eph 1:18-23; Cf Ps 95:10) to know ABOUT God, and to even LOVE God, and know Him casually falls short of understanding His ways, and His reasons, or at least trusting them! a. God s Calling (vs 18b). 1) This calling was mentioned before in verses ) Paul said that God called him by his grace (Gal 1:15). Just because of His giving nature! 3) The Christian who does not know about God s high calling (Phil 3:14), his holy calling (2Tim 1:9), and his heavenly calling (Heb 3:1), will never be able to walk worthy of that calling, or vocation (Eph 4:1). They will always miss out on striving for that prize! 4) God s calling (not just impulse or personal interest) gives confidence to the person attempting to serve the Lord, that he is doing exactly what God has called him or her to do, and that God will enable them to do it (1Thes 5:24). 5) Note also 1 Peter 2:9; 5:10. The word, hope for the believer is more than hope so, like a child hoping for a present at Christmas - it refers to an assurance for the future. When we were lost, we had no hope (Eph 2:12), but in Jesus Christ, we have a lively hope (1Pet 1:3) which encourages us each day a solid confidence. Do you have that at all in your thoughts? b. God s Rewards - the Riches of God s Inheritance (vs 18c). 1) We not only have an inheritance in Christ (eternal life, forgiveness, peace with God, HEAVEN, Mansions, crowns, etc), but we are an inheritance to Christ (see vs 11). 2) This is an amazing truth that God should look on us as a part of His great wealth! 3) Paul knows that if the Christian will learn just how much he means to Christ then he will start living to delight and please the Lord (Rev 4:11). 4) There is an inheritance in this room tonight! Get to know them! c. God s Power (vs 19-23) all at our disposal (James 5:16) 1) God gives us a super abundance of divine strength to do things that otherwise could not be accomplished outside of Christ. The requirement to have this power is believing and compliance to God s will, hence, salvation. The Book of Ephesians Page 7
CONCLUSION: 2) Consider what kind of person you were before you were saved and then after salvation. Was there a difference? That is the power of God. Only His power can take a Hell-bound sinner and convert him into a Heaven-bound, Christ honouring believer. With the new creation comes a new lifestyle, empowered by the Holy Spirit of God. 3) The measure of that power is expressed in verses ) This power: a) Was shown in the Resurrection - Raised Christ from the dead (vs 20). The divine power that raised Christ from the dead, is the same power that changes a person s life. b) Was shown in Christ s Ascension - Exalted Christ to heavenly places c) Was shown in Christ s Victory over All Enemies - Far above all spiritual dominions and the world (vs 20b,21). There is no time past, present and future that there will be an exception to this. The best news is that He is above Satan and is greater than Satan. A demonstration of God s power above the power of Satan is given in 2Thes 2. d. God s Authority (1:22,23) 1) Authority over All Believers - Exalted Christ to be the Head of the Church (vs 22). The power of Christ to be over all things is here vested in the church. This shows the importance of the church in God s mind. a) A wise believer will certainly understand that if the church is that important to God, then we would do well to be in constant support of it, part of it, and in love with the people of it! b) If the church is the body of the Lord Jesus Christ, then Christ must be the head! The head is the centre of authority that controls the movements and functions of the body. The body is only to respond to the signals sent out from the head. If the body does not respond to stimuli sent from the head, or responds improperly, that body may either be paralyzed or crippled. (i) Too many churches are out of control operating like headless chickens (ii) It begins with stubbornness by Christians against the commands of Christ and the authority of Scripture, and instead only respond to feelings and emotions and what they perceive to be Spiritual directions c) God wants the church to be a healthy body that functions as the Head so desires. If this is the order of a body, and God is the One doing the comparison, then it is clear how believers should relate to the church. d) How much authority do you give to the Lord Jesus Christ? (i) Is He allowed to restrict your life, your loves, your freedoms? (ii) Is he Captain, or just counsellor? (iii) A true Christian 2) Authority over ALL things including the devil and all sinners a) Over Wind and waves b) Over Satan (Job 1 & 2) c) Over all spirits and demons and angels d) Over your problems The blessings that a Christian posses now and forevermore are as follows: 1. The Election of the Believer He chose us for Himself 2. The Predestination of the Believer to be with God 3. The Adoption of the Believer we are accepted as sons with full privileges 4. The Redemption of the Believer we are completely forgiven 5. The Revelation of the Will of God for the Believer 6. The Purpose of the Believer to be Christ s treasure 7. The Sealing of the Believer securely sealed by the Holy Spirit until we reach heaven 8. The Presence of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Believer we have just an earnest of God s Spirit 9. The Challenge for the Believer to know God and His power in their lives The power that a Christian posses or at least has direct access to is limitless! The greatest power shortage today is not in electrical power or in petrol tanks - it is in our own personal lives. As Paul has prayed this prayer, can it be answered in your life? Will you, starting right now, begin to know God by experience, His calling, His riches and His power? Let God answer Paul s prayer for you right now through believing and compliance to God s will.
