1 ENVIRONMENT Session topic Code for Sustainable Homes Surface Water Run-off Session objectives To explain the workings of Category 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, 'Surface Water Run-off', showing where credits are available, discussing upcoming revisions to the category, and exploring the merits of SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems). Intended audience This programme is relevant to anyone involved in the design, maintenance or construction of homes or drainage systems; this includes architects, engineers, planners, surveyors, other construction professionals, contractors and clients, as well as local authorities. Summary Programme Published in March 2009, 'Surface Water Run-off' (Category 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes) is already under review. The 2009 document aimed to 'avoid, reduce and delay the discharge of rainfall to public sewers and watercourses', but the reviewed category will insist that this be achieved by SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems). This programme explores surface water run-off regulations and techniques and looks into the pros and cons of SUDS. It provides definitions of the '100 year, 6-hour event' and '1 year in 100-year return period events'. The revised Category 4 will push for both the 'peak water run-off' and the 'volume of surface water run-off' to be the same after a development is built as it was before work began. The practicality of this and the type of retention and attenuation devices required are discussed. The programme explains what must be done to achieve the Code for Sustainable Homes credits for this category, and how compliance is assessed. 1 ENV
2 Programme notes The Study Notes for this programme are an extract from the document: Communities and Local Government (February 2008) The Code for Sustainable Homes: Setting the standard in sustainability for new homes, DCLG. Crown Copyright, 2008 The extract is 'Category 4: Surface Water Run-off'. About the contributors Dr Caspar Hewett, is an environmental consultant with over 12 years research experience in water resources. He is the director of The Great Debate; Visiting Fellow at the Sir Joseph Swan Institute for Energy Research, and is on the steering group for the United Nations University Regional Centre of Expertise in Education for Sustainable Development in the North East. Constantine Tornaros, is the technical director of Syntegra Consulting. He is a Code for Sustainable Homes assessor and a qualified engineer specialising in Renewable Energy Systems Technology and focusing on: hydropower, sustainability and energy policy. Discussion Points What does Category 4 'Surface Water Run-off' aim to achieve, and what requirements must be met to merit the two credits available for this category? State the difference between the 'peak rate of run-off' and the 'volume of run-off'. Explain what is meant by the '1 year, 100-year return period events' and the '100 year, 6-hour event'. What is a 'SUDs management train'? Discuss the relative pros and cons of SUDs versus piped drainage systems. Consider the feasibility of maintaining peak water run-off and volumes of surface water run-off at pre-development levels. How is run-off cleaned as it percolates through granular layers?
