1 November 3-13, 2015 Reporting Test Scores to Colleges If your plan is to attend a four-year college or university right after high school, you undoubtedly will be taking an ACT and/or SAT in preparation for college admissions. Colleges will want to receive an official copy of your scores directly from ACT or College Board. Did you know you may send your scores for free to up to four schools? At the time of test registration and up to a few days later, you will be able to designate these schools. Then, when your score report is ready, they will be sent an official copy. After this time, you will be required to pay a fee for each score report. Some students choose to use the Score Choice service through SAT, which allows a release of scores for a specific test date. For most colleges, however, they generally use your best test score even if you send all of them. As the test taker, it is ultimately your responsibility to ensure your scores are received by interested educational institutions so plan ahead! Resources We have some websites we would like to provide to families as counseling-related informational resources. While these are not necessarily endorsed by the Westview Counseling Department, they often provide interesting information in regards to career and college planning. The Chronicle of Higher Education College Completion* - This site provides data to students on what the average time frame is for college graduation. In many situations, students are taking longer than four years to graduate. The information is broken down by school and race/ethnicity. 1
2 College-Scholarships.com GPA Calculator* - When calculating GPA for admission purposes, many colleges use only grades from sophomore and junior year. This tool will assist students with accurately calculating their eligible GPA. Occupational Outlook Handbook* - Official site from the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics. Students can find occupational information here on hundreds of various careers, trends in employment and more. Tuition Lab and Tuition Lab Free* - Downloadable app for Android and Apple phones providing costs of attending college for participating institutions. Users may analyze data based on editing financial aid, loans, etc. For a full list of resources that is updated on a regular basis, click here. Schools Beyond UC, CSU & Ivy Leagues Did you know colleges exist rivaling the Ivy Leagues campuses without the same price tag? Perhaps you were not aware that some schools have a commitment to environmental learning or some other unique niche. There are many things to consider when looking at potential colleges. Finding the right fit for you in terms of academics, spirit, athletics, price and more can be quite a challenge. Selecting the right place should be more than name recognition. Take a look at some of the great resources the counseling department has put together to help in your college search. Great Colleges You May Have Not Considered - Until Now Cooperative Learning Colleges Great Schools for "B" Students Environmentally-Focused Colleges Ivy Leagues and Similar Colleges Service Learning Colleges Website Resources: While we cannot endorse the websites below because we have no control over content, we provide them to you as resources to help with further research. Payscale.com - This website allows you to search by school to determine the value of your education versus the starting and mid-level salaries after graduation. Forbes Magazine Value Ranking - This ranking looks at institutions based on what students get out of them, such as value, ability to graduate in four years, career possibilities, etc. College Visits Many colleges come on campus to meet with students to discuss their academic programs, campus life, scholarships and more. If you come to a CSU campus and are deemed not college-ready, it will cost you more money and perhaps even delay your college graduation. Below are some resources for you to assist you in determining your status. EAP Status - lets you know if you are already determined to be college-ready. ELA - links to exam prep, your current status and more in regards to English college readiness. ELM - links to exam prep, your current status and more in regards to Math college readiness. 10
