1 POSITION DESCRIPTION Position: Director of Learning Technologies Incumbent: Responsible to: Principal Direct Reports: 3 Status: Full-time Classification: Fixed-term contract (5 years) Preamble Pulteney Grammar School ( School ) is a vibrant co-educational city school, which inspires, challenges and empowers young men and women to achieve their full potential in life. The School provides complete contemporary education from the Early Learning Centre to Year 12 based on the School values and Anglican traditions. Our focus is to empower our students to become well rounded citizens with a strong ethical and moral character who are capable of assuming a leadership role in the local and global community. Our priorities are to; Provide a vibrant learning environment Employ and develop outstanding teachers and staff Be progressive in all that we do Build and maintain great facilities Exude an inclusive community spirit Be financially strong and efficient The Director of Learning Technologies (LT) is a strategic member of the School s Executive and provides the School with leadership to enable the Information and Learning Technology (ILT) team to execute the information communication and learning technologies vision and strategy, as a driver of 21 st century learning. The Director of LT enables and supports teaching, learning, research and administration by managing and integrating services in information management and technology. Purpose of Position The Director of LT manages the School s physical and virtual information services and ILT. These services combined are central to the teaching and learning programs of the School by providing physical access as well as virtual resources 24/7 to the Pulteney Grammar School community. The Director of LT will provide vision and leadership in the development and implementation of the ILT program across all sub-schools, ELC to Year 12.

2 The Director of LT manages a team of staff and is a leader in the teaching and learning process. They exhibit professional leadership within the School community and work collaboratively with teaching staff to create learning opportunities that meet students needs and cater for individual learning styles. The Director of LT must ensure the School culture is appropriate for the 21 st Century by taking a proactive role. They must build a staff team where initiative, innovative teaching practice, peer support and loyalty are valued; where teachers are given the opportunity and skills to confidently use relevant resources and contemporary learning technologies and students are encouraged to become independent learners. The Director of LT will lead the ILT Team in planning and implementing information systems to support both distributed and centralised learning and administration operations, and achieve effective and cost beneficial enterprise-wide ILT operations. The ILT Team comprises: A Senior Infrastructure Technician and ILT Helpdesk Technicians who are responsible for implementing the decisions of the Director of LT, maintaining the School s network, and the repair and general running of the computer and peripheral devices across all sub-schools. The Director of LT will also work closely with the Lead Teacher of ICT and the Learning Technologies Coordinator. The Director of LT serves as advisor to the Principal and the Executive on information and learning technology issues. 3 Key Responsibilities and Duties Strategic Vision and Leadership Enable information and learning technologies to support the strategic goals and objectives of the School in an ILT Strategic Plan. Collaboratively develop a three-year information and learning technology strategic plan to guide Pulteney s technology resources. Plan, develop, and implement strategies to ensure the School continues to be a leader in the provision of ILT to the internal and external School community. Coordinate the ILT vision and planning process that regularly evaluates existing technology, information systems, policies and staffing Ensure relevant stakeholders are involved in the development of ILT strategies and services. Research new solutions and technologies and recommend changes. Write requests for information and requests for proposals for leading edge technologies; in conjunction with the Business Director evaluate proposals and negotiate contracts for hardware, software and systems. Seek input from outsourced ILT vendors and Government/outside agencies and ILT staff to identify opportunities and build relationships and partnerships that can bring competitive advantage. Systems Administration and Reporting Responsibility for ICT systems and service delivery to ensure these are well managed and maintained and a high standard of service delivery and functionality is provided to students and staff. In close consultation with external ICT providers ensure existing systems are maintained and managed to ensure the Schools systems operate at optimum performance, risks are minimised and costs are managed. Perform ongoing internal audits of ICT systems to ensure documentation is maintained and issues are addressed to ensure ongoing risks are reduced. Ensure all staff have access to accurate, relevant, and timely information to support student welfare and learning, promote workplace efficiencies and build a positive and supportive community. Promote and oversee relationships between the network s IT resources and external entities (e.g. government and partners). Develop and maintain the systems architecture, defining standards and protocols for data exchange, communications, software and interconnection of network information systems. Develop and maintain system recovery plans in the event of power failure, damage to system, etc. Facilitate the correction of any system failures. Oversee the development, maintenance, and communication of system documentation, policies, and procedures. Communicate ILT plans, policies and technology trends throughout the School. Develop, implement and maintain comprehensive user training programs for all staff and students. Maintain appropriate documentation and on-line help facilities.

4 Budget Creation and Management Coordinate, approve and control all projects related to selection, acquisition, development and installation of major information systems. Provide advice on evaluation, selection, implementation and maintenance of information systems, ensuring appropriate investment in strategic and operational systems. Prepare business cases in support of proposed ICT improvements and recommendations. Evaluate systems to measure their success. In consultation with the Business Director, develop and manage annual ICT budgets. Review all hardware and software acquisition and maintenance contracts, soliciting involvement and participation of other management team members as appropriate. Develop and maintain corporate policies and standards aimed at maximising effectiveness and minimising costs related to the acquisition, implementation and operation of IT systems. Develop master purchase or lease agreements for hardware, software, maintenance and telecommunication services in consultation with Business Director. Manage the School ICT fleet, coordinate the asset replacement program and maintain relationships with the ICT asset financier. Develop and monitor the approved annual operating and capital budgets for information and learning technology systems. Maintain contact with IT suppliers and maintain knowledge of current technology, equipment, prices and terms of agreements to minimise the investment required to meet established service levels. Evaluate alternatives, perform appropriate cost benefit analysis, and recommend solutions that maximise effectiveness and minimise costs commensurate with acceptable risks. Manage relationships with vendors for sales, service and support of all information systems and technology. Maintain problem logs, documenting system errors or defects. Serve as the primary contact to software, hardware and network-related vendors, consultants, and partners. Planning/Policy Development Manage the planning, development, evaluation, coordination and management of the information and technology systems. This includes learning platform, database, telephones, print management systems and office automation. Oversee the bring your own device (BYOD) program for the School and coordinate the year-end process for parent purchases through the external service provider. Develop and enforce policy and procedures to ensure the protection of the ILT assets. Gather and analyse changing requirements of users and develop effective and feasible ways to satisfy user requirements in the delivery of new and existing information systems services. Develop and maintain key relationships and professional contacts with other schools, hardware and software vendors and professional organisations concerning computer applications and product.

5 Team Leadership Provide leadership, supervision and a learning environment for ILT team members. Motivate teams by communicating goals and performance expectations, ensuring appropriate training in work and organisational skills. Coach, facilitate, prioritise work, monitor workloads, review progress, provide feedback and conclude employment contracts where necessary. Integrate the work of the ILT team to achieve a model of best professional practice. Give recognition for valued performance and celebrate achievement. Build and create a professional development environment; enhancing the skills in ILT team to achieve strategic goals in line with Performance Appraisal and Development Process. Select, train, supervise and evaluate ILT team members. Assure that the duties and roles assigned to team members will be performed during holidays, illnesses, and other instances where key ILT members are not available.

6 PERSON SPECIFICATION Education Tertiary qualifications in information technology with a focus on technology that enhances teaching and learning Tertiary qualifications in education, business or project management (desirable) Experience Significant experience in the application of information technology in education to enhance teaching and learning Experience in the development and roll-out of IT policies and strategies, coupled with strong IT governance skills High level experience in the full spectrum of operational IT systems Strong leadership experience in diverse organisations with proven ability in managing large projects Strong budget management skills Experience in leading, managing, mentoring and developing a team of IT professionals Experience in change management Experience in contractor and third party vendor management, in particular with managing budgets, contracts and service levels agreements Experience in writing Board reports, business cases and in evaluating proposals Knowledge Knowledge of the current and developing information services requirements of an ELC-Year 12 school environment Knowledge of existing and emerging information technology and trends Demonstrated knowledge of strategic planning and the ability to translate Pulteney s strategic directions into operational imperatives Personal Attributes Commitment to delivering exceptional ILT services to stakeholders Excellent organisational and planning skills with the ability to lead by example and delegate effectively Excellent attention to detail with a focus on data integrity Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to engage with people from varying backgrounds in a non-technical manner Ability to work independently and show initiative Ability to take an analytical and logical approach to problem solving Ability to provide strategic guidance and a commitment to innovation in the development of systems and processes Ability to foster a cooperative and service focussed work environment Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships Strategic leadership skills and the ability to build a high performing team Self motivated, conscientious, reliable and enthusiastic Understanding and sensitivity to the issues surrounding change management Ability to maintain solidarity and confidentiality with the Executive team
