2 POSITION DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE BUSINESS UNIT REPORTING TO LOCATION Associate Director - Learning and Teaching Academic Pathways Learning and Teaching Director Academic Programs TBC DATE August 2013 CLASSIFICATION 3 year contract position PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The Associate Director Learning and Teaching is responsible for leading innovative and effective curriculum planning, development and delivery in accordance with UWSCollege and UWS academic policies. ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT UWSCollege Pty Limited is a not-for-profit company, wholly-owned by the University of Western Sydney (UWS). The College was created to provide academic pathways to the University, complemented by English language and other professional programs for Australian and international students. Created in 2006, the College has its antecedents in English language and foundation studies programs offered by various University Schools and entities since the 1980s. UWSCollege is divided into two broad divisional areas: Academic Pathway Programs which is responsible for the delivery of our programs and related student services; and Corporate Services which provides the planning capability and support services to our educational mission. Within these broad divisions are four business units: Academic Pathway Programs English Programs and Professional and Community Programs College Registrar, and Corporate Services. Like its parent institution, UWSCollege operates across a number of campuses in Greater Western Sydney. English Programs and Professional and Community Programs are offered from the Westmead campus; Academic Pathway Programs are available on the Nirimba Education Precinct at Quakers Hill and at our Westmead campus. The College is scheduled to open a new campus at Lithgow in late 2013 and will have a presence on the UWS campus at Bankstown in 2014 and Kingswood in Position Description: Associate Director Learning and Teaching: Updated October 2013
3 CONSTRAINT/AUTHORITY LEVEL The position operates in accordance with UWSCollege policies, and the requirements of relevant legislation, awards and agreements. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES 1. Lead the teaching and learning team promoting a culture of teaching excellence, continuous improvement and innovation. 2. Ensure best practice standards of education through leadership in curriculum development and review; quality assessment and moderation; designing and innovative business processes with a focus on continuous improvement and educational excellence; 3. oversee academic policy application and associated compliance within scope of role 4. manage, monitor and report regularly on prescribed reporting requirements, including examinations, surveys and assessment standards in teaching and learning delivery 5. identify, develop and implement curriculum strategies to address issues identified through strategic intervention reports, SFUs, TESQA audit outcomes, etc 6. oversee, develop and implement procedures related to teaching, staff allocation to classes, assessment, moderation, quality assurance 7. contribute to the recruitment, retention and development of high calibre teaching staff through participation in interviews, provision of staff feedback and development, and professional coaching/mentoring. 8. contribute to and oversee the development of curriculum for new program development for UWSCollege Awards 9. participate in benchmarking activities, as required, on behalf of Academic Pathway Programs, and 10. in conjunction with Teaching and Learning management, optimise student retention, progression and completion rates and attendance through implementing effective curriculum development, classroom practices and other College retention strategies within the scope of the role. 11. liaison with Curriculum Managers and Timetable team regarding timetabling, teacher allocation, classes and information process 12. work collaboratively with the Content and Information Management team to ensure the development and delivery of high quality and professional teaching resources consistent with the College s pedagogy model. KEY LEADERSHIP ACCOUNTABILITIES The incumbent of this position must: 1. manage accountabilities and deliverables within prescribed budget parameters 2. work strategically and collaboratively with other teaching and learning leaders to ensure the provision of quality education programs 3. provide staff leadership, engendering teamwork and collaboration. 4. promote a safe, efficient, and effective work/learning environment. 5. as a member of the College management team, ensure UWSCollege meets its legislative/compliance obligations within scope of role 2
4 6. function as an effective member of the Teaching and Learning management team 7. develop a culture of continuous improvement in programs and services by promoting pursuit of excellence in all College practices related to academic learning and teaching, and 8. develop and maintain effective relationships, alliances and networks within the community and within UWS. SELECTION CRITERIA The successful applicant will meet the following criteria: 1. Demonstrated ability to lead a multi-disciplinary and geographically dispersed team in a changing environment; 2. Post-graduate tertiary qualifications in discipline area with a minimum of 10 years teaching experience; 3. Demonstrated experience in the creation and implementation of innovative business processes, quality assurance processes and/or change management plans with a focus on continuous improvement and service excellence; 4. Demonstrated high level interpersonal, negotiation, listening and communication skills with the ability to develop and maintain networks and contacts and relate to stakeholders from diverse backgrounds; 5. Demonstrated ability to develop effective working partnerships with staff at all levels, to fully ascertain business requirements, develop appropriate systems and procedures and manage the implementation of these; 6. Demonstrated experience in curriculum and course development; 7. Demonstrated high level planning and administrative skills including financial management; 8. Experience in implementing new teaching and learning initiatives within an education context.
