4 The My Learning Journey programme In your first few months at Barclays you ll be engaged in the My Learning Journey Programme. This is designed to welcome you into your role and provide you with the knowledge and insight you need to be successful as you settle in. The online programme includes: The role of PCB at Barclays - its vision, goals and structure Overviews of the PCB business areas Where to go for help or more information Access to a virtual Buddy to access Q&A s This downloadable guide is an important part of the My Leaning Journey programme. It will support you as you transition into role, providing you with a clear plan to track and share your progress. Your line manager and buddy are also working from a guide, structured in a similar way. This means that they re equipped to provide you with the right support and feedback during your transition into role. 3

5 What to expect It s really important that your transition into role is positive and enjoyable. To achieve this, there s a combined responsibility for you, your line manager and your buddy to work together and be clear on expectations of each other. What to expect from us What we expect from you From day one your line manager, buddy and other colleagues will help you to feel welcome. They ll introduce you to your team and help you find your way around. Your line manager and buddy will become key people who ll provide support to you through the first few months, providing you with advice and feedback. They ll help answer any questions you may have, from building your network to understanding our processes and procedures and the way to get things done around here. They ll make themselves available as a sounding board and take active involvement during your transition journey. We d like you to be proactive during your transition journey. Ask lots of questions and never think twice about sharing ideas. Share any concerns so that they can be dealt with quickly. Give yourself time to participate in the activities recommended in this guide. Be demanding of your line manager and ensure that development and performance discussions are booked in with your line manager/ buddy. Take the time needed to build your understanding, knowledge and network. You ll have regular review meetings with your line manager to discuss key outcomes for the role, your development priorities and how you feel things are going. 4

7 DAY 1 Milestones for day one Starting a new job can conjure up many emotions. There s the obvious excitement alongside some possible apprehension. Our aim is that you ll feel at ease from day one with us. Day one is mainly about getting to know your line manager and your new team and finding your way around. You should also receive any equipment you need, e.g. desktop/laptop, phone, and set up your systems. This checklist outlines the key activities that you should aim to cover on your first day. Please also review the list of key contacts provided by your line manager. 6

8 Find your way around Your buddy/line manager will take you to your desk and give you a tour of the office. They ll show you the location of the: Fire and emergency escapes Toilets/bathrooms Meeting rooms/ breakout areas Print hubs Lifts Kitchen/ canteen areas Check that you ve got everything you need A security pass and vending pass where applicable Log on to your laptop/desktop, set up the relevant systems and map to the printers and shared drives Set up Identification and Verification (ID&V) where applicable / My Secrets Set up your BlackBerry / Cisco phone and add yourself to the telephone directory if applicable Set up your signature Set up your calendar with planned meetings and time for personal development planning Access My Careers To find out about the role of PCB at Barclays and the various PCB teams. 13 WEEK 1 Milestones for week one A key milestone for this week is meeting key stakeholders/ team members you ll be working with in your role. You should also meet with your line manager to agree your performance objectives and plan your development. Barclays considers performance to be as much about what we do as well as how we do it. To find out more about performance management at Barclays, visit the My Performance site. Settle in WEEK 1 Key activities Completed? Understand the business Visit Barclays.com and research our clients, values, business areas, products, structure and senior groupwide/regional/local management. Find out more about PCB Familiarise yourself with the PCB Intranet for all the latest communications and information on PCB. This includes My HR Take time to review the tools and resources available on the MYHR intranet including the self service tasks available and where to go for help with HR queries Understand what external research, publications and news articles you should subscribe to keep up to date with the industry. 12

14 Being Barclays All new colleagues are asked to attend a Being Barclays experience. This is available as either a one day face-to-face event or as a virtual session. You ll receive an invitation via to book onto one of these sessions. Start mandatory training In order to achieve our regulatory requirements and ensure that you have the knowledge needed, HR colleagues are required to complete some mandatory training. You can access this via My Learning in the My HR Portal. Identify stakeholders It s useful to identify and map your key stakeholders/ team members and share this with your line manager/ buddy. Make a note of their role, objectives, priorities and preferred communication styles. Also share any information about yourself that you think would help you build and strengthen your relationship. Weekly check-in Check-in with your line manager/buddy to discuss how the week is going. They will confirm that all week one activities have been completed and provide any support required if not. 13

15 WEEK 1 Tools to support you in week one This section contains additional detail to support you in achieving your milestones for week one. Understanding your business area Understanding the business / function you support will make a big difference to your ability to support as an PCB professional. Here are some tips your colleagues have suggested to help build your knowledge: Review any associated intranet sites/strategy documents Visit the How the Bank Works programme on the Colleague Curriculum Ask colleagues to identify who would be good to reach out to for more information about their business and role Spend time in the business work shadowing colleagues where possible Stakeholder mapping Creating and maintaining a stakeholder map will help you to understand the key roles each of your stakeholders/ team members play. You can find a tool to do this in the Managing Stakeholders programme on the Colleague Curriculum. 14

16 Meeting with your line manager Before you meet with your line manager, it can be helpful to think about effective relationships you ve had with managers in the past. Sharing this information with your line manager will help inform your discussions about how you plan to work together and the style of support they provide. You might want to ask them: o Who are your main stakeholders/ team members? o What are the key priorities/expectations? o Who are my best contacts for systems and processes? 15

18 MONTH 1 Milestones for month one In your first month, you ll start to experience your new role and get a good sense of what it s like to work here. To help you achieve this you should start to get some clarity on what is required by agreeing clear outcomes/ objectives along with you a Personal Development Plan which focuses on the priorities for you in the next few months. You ll also expand your network and stakeholder map and take opportunities to job shadow a colleague where available. Experience your new role MONTH 1 Key activities Completed? Agree your objectives Meet with your line manager to discuss and agree clear business objectives that you re expected to deliver against. Have a development discussion, using the Personal Development Plan in the Tools section below. Log your objectives When you ve agreed the final version with your line manager, input your performance objectives onto the My Performance system. 17

19 Start your development planning After the meeting with your line manager, you should be able to match the expectations of your role with your current skills. Start to complete your Personal Development Plan to cover any current development gaps. These will be reviewed regularly with your line manager and peer support. Visit the PCB Academy to find out more information about the development available. Build your network Continue to build your network through Mysite and share your ideas and experiences. Add to your stakeholder map Continue to build your stakeholder map as you meet more colleagues and learn more information. Work shadow another colleague who is doing the same job as you If you get the opportunity to do so, work shadowing another colleague enables you to learn more about your role through observing, participating, and asking questions. We ve included a list of questions you may wish to ask in the Tools section below. Monthly Learning Journey review In this meeting with your line manager you ll have the opportunity to review your key deliverables and any areas you would like more support with. You ll also assess your progress against the development plan and discuss any general feedback. Agree with your line manager how much time you can spend on personal development and build this into your schedule for the coming months. Take the opportunity to share your thoughts/feelings so far and discuss any additional support you need. 18

20 MONTH 1 Tools to support you in month one To help you get the most from month one, we ve included some extra information below about some of your key milestones. Development planning The PCB Academy is the one-stop-shop where PCB colleagues can access professional, personal and leadership development; all in one place, accessible anytime, and designed for you. The academy provides PCB colleagues an integrated learning approach containing a range of informal learning opportunities as well as more traditional learning, across all varying abilities globally enabling colleagues to broaden their skills across PCB specialisms. As a new joiner or a new line manager in PCB, be sure to visit and familiarise yourself with content on the academy. Take the opportunity to see what learning we have available which you may benefit from, speak to your line manager, and create a development plan. Job shadowing When you job shadow another colleague, it s helpful to observe closely what they do and ask them any questions you may have about the role. Here s a list of questions which you might find useful to ask your colleague (there s also space to add your own). Can you describe a typical day for you? What types of skills are necessary for succeeding in this role? 19

22 MONTH 1 Your My Learning Journey review meetings This template acts as a prompt to support your discussions with your line manager each month. You can complete this or just use it as a tool to stimulate your thoughts. 27 MONTH 2 & beyond Milestones for month two and beyond Many of the activities in months two and beyond are building on the foundations you ve made in your first month with us. The key difference is that during this time we hope that you start to feel like you ve become a part of the PCB business. Throughout this period, you should meet with your line manager every month to catch up on your progress and maintain communication while you re building your role. Continue to build your network Consider other PCB businesses to your own and build contacts in these areas, adding to your stakeholder map as appropriate. 26

28 Spend a day in the wider business It s good to get experience of other teams and other key functions that you ll be working with. If you have an opportunity to spend time in some of these areas then it will help build your knowledge and understanding. Arrange to spend some time in a local branch/corporate centre/call centre understanding how they work with customers and clients. Explore the broader functions and business areas that make up Barclays, e.g. Wealth, Risk etc. To do this look at the intranet sites or meet a contact in that business area. Use your contacts in the Emerge network to understand more about their business. Connect with your global contacts to understand more about their operation and look for opportunities for collaboration. Review your Personal Development Plan In month three, reflect on the development needs you identified in week one. Do they still feel appropriate? Make any changes necessary. Review your performance objectives In month three, check how you re progressing against your objectives and make any necessary adjustments. Think about your wellbeing As you make the transition into role, there may be times when you choose to step back and consider your personal journey. There are some great resources on the global curriculums to help support you, such as Positive Resilience, Building Self Insight and an intranet site Wellness at Barclays. Consider a community event We encourage you to get involved in any community events or networks that will help you get comfortable and settle into Barclays a lot quicker. 27
