5 In the NEWS as reported by owen maxwell TO MUSIC & BEYOND Though there s plenty of jokes around how little the titles of festivals apply to their content anymore, the 2018 Music and Beyond more than lives up to its name. For its ninth year, the boundary-pushing fest is exploring through dance, theatre, and more complicated mediums this July. One key show is the Ottawa-made Sleeping Rough which looks at the life of a homeless man through music, puppetry and a libretto. Other shows feature artists sketching to live music, musical lectures on melody s healing power, orchestral Shakespeare, and even Whose Opera Is It Anyway? which is exactly what it sounds like. The festival is also operating across an extensive list of venues all over the city including Soif, the National Arts Centre, the University of Ottawa, Dominion-Chalmers United Church, and the Algonquin Commons Theatre so check out show listings before it all wraps up on July 18. THE NATIONAL CREATION FUND POWERS THE ARTS The National Arts Centre has announced its initial recipients for the National Creation Fund. The initiative was launched in 2016 to support the growth of powerful and imaginative projects in Canadian theatre, dance, music and the broader performing arts. The $1.4 million dollars invested will be helping artists expand their crews, provide more workshops, offer residencies and update their production technology. The fund is supporting productions all across Canada in cities like Quebec, Iqaluit, Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. One show supported by the fund is Who We Are In The Dark which mixes NOTES FROM THE COALITION BY NIK IVES-ALLISON dance with creative lighting, and music from Arcade Fire s Sarah Neufeld and Jeremy Gara. Led by The 7 Fingers of Montreal, Artcirq of Igloolik, and Taqqut Productions of Iqaluit, Unikkaaqtuat is a major multidisciplinary production blending circus arts, music, theatre, and video projection, exploring Inuit founding myths through a wide range of disciplines, including video, theatre, and circus to follow the Inuit from their past to their future. Kid Koala s The Storyville Mosquito finds the DJ creating a story through puppets, sets, and a dynamic use of cameras and live sound. 3D PRINTING GOES MUSICAL 3D printing is revolutionizing manufacturing industries but its applications in the world of music could help prevent endless amounts of music related injuries. The Ottawa Symphony Orchestra recently held their National 3D Printed Musical Instrument Challenge with this in mind and the results were fascinating. While music lifts the soul, many musicians struggle to perform due to injury, said OSO Music Director Alain Trudel. At its core, the challenge asked engineers to solve causes of injuries by instruments rather than their effects, while keeping aesthetics in mind. The winner of the contest was Ottawa University PhD student Rob Hunter, who designed a 3D-printed clarinet and brace. A biomedical engineer and lifetime musician, Hunter was uniquely qualified for the task. I was inspired by playing clarinet in high school, where my wrist and thumb would get very sore after long periods of practice, said Hunter. Hunter not only receives a cash prize but a five-figure budget to produce and fit his design. Hunter s design can also be seen at the OSO s concert on November 4 as part of their 3D StringTheory project. OMIC As our music festival and events industry grows, one of the questions many fans and city residents have is how these large-scale displays of civic pride are contributing to efforts to make our city (and society) a greener place. The vast majority of festivals and large events are keen to do their part and take a leadership role when it comes to encouraging environmentally-friendly practices. For example, the Tim Hortons Dragon Boat Festival, which this year presented Hollerado, Craig Cardiff, and Broken Social Scene, became the first carbon-neutral festival in North America in RBC Ottawa Bluesfest provides supervised bike parking and includes travel on OC Transpo as part of its passes. However, we understand that as an industry more needs to (and should be done) to help festivals meet their own green goals and those of our wider community. We can t mandate that festivals implement full recycling and organic waste collection programs immediately in Ottawa, like elsewhere in Ontario, event waste and recycling, like all commercial waste, requires private waste management which can be extremely costly. But we can, and will be, looking at how the City and the industry can work together to bring universal recycling and other green initiatives to life. At the end of June, the City of Ottawa passed a motion that will have the City and industry have a look together at the by-laws guiding our large special events (festivals and events larger than 500 people). Through this process, we ll have the chance to learn more about how the City and the industry can work together to increase the number of festivals recycling, composting and adopting other green initiatives. Alongside Ottawa Festivals, the Ottawa Music Industry Coalition is proud to have played a role in striking the right balance between our shared desire to build a more environmentally sustainable society and making sure our industry can continue to grow and thrive, especially considering how many of these events are non-profit. We look forward to working with our members and the City to move our industry forward and demonstrate our leadership when it comes to building a cleaner, greener Ottawa. 6 FOOLS OF LOVE - THE HOWL AND THE WHISPER BY OWEN MAXWELL REVIEW IN THE WORLD OF MODERN ROCK, TRYING TO MAKE SOMETHING REL- EVANT WHILE GRABBING MASS AU- DIENCES IS A DELICATE TIGHTROPE WALK. Ottawa s Fools Of Love manages to offer some exciting pop-rock jams, while using this accessibility to take other songs completely off the rails. Though the record can feel as though it constantly changes gears, it shows the full breadth of their talent. Throughout the album, Fools of Love show a real sense of grandeur and dynamics in their writing that keeps it all just as intriguing as it is fun to listen to. They let you know this is their M.O. as the album starts on Miles Away where rolling drum-lines and sweeping strings just make their dark guitars all the more epic. Rather than getting overtly serious or too cliché, they lean into the heavy riffs with earnest emotions to make every drop feel poignant and satisfying. While their opening track offers more of a dense and all-enveloping rock experience, they explore individual sounds with a powerful depth through the other songs on the record. They embody the worlds of metal and hard rock on Fix Yourself while actually critiquing the Live fast, die young lifestyle many similar songs promote. Though this makes for a much stronger lyrical focus, Fools of Love effortlessly cover all their bases in the writing on this one. As they switch to much more rapid and sprawling rock on tracks like Golden Age and Heavy Head however, they knock out catchy moments again and again. Despite the utter chaos and non-stop pace many of these sons on the record have, Fools of Love tend to fit in more detail and powerfully descriptive writing in these songs. Other moments in the record find the band pushing their writing to truly explosive ends, while they take some hard left turns that truly pay off. Such is the case on something like Live Forever (Never Die) where Fools Of Love slowly build from a tender, personal soft-rock track into something with momentum. It s when they hit a bridge, similar to what they do on Swan Dive that they really show the dynamic range to not only keep their songs interesting but with a range that makes their music emotionally satisfying. Even the sequencing on the album helps add tension to songs like Sleeping On A Train that despite its fairly consistent energy from start to finish always feels like it s about to open up. In the scheme of the record, this release comes in the immediate rush of Down By The Lake which takes every one of the cues from Sleeping On A Train and goes for it viciously. Fools Of Love s greatest strengths are being able to make each song work individually while truly transcending as one larger piece, as their stories stand tall while complementing each other s energy. Even after the excitement has shaken off from their transition, Down By The Lake is truly Fools Of Love at their most fiery, where every eccentric hook is taken to a memorable place and the energy is contagious. Truly a band ready to dominate well beyond their local stages, Fools Of Love bring their A-game to The Howl and The Whisper. Mixing accessible and fun pop moments with ambitious rock writing, they never get too comfortable on this record. Though their more epic writing could make their other songs feel simplistic, Fools of Love end up exploring sounds in these moments to keep the album exciting. NO PROBLEM SITUATION - NO PROBLEM SITUATION BY CANDACE NELSON REVIEW PRETTY BAD RECORDS, AN OTTA- WA BASED LABEL DEDICATED EX- CLUSIVELY TO LOCAL BANDS ON 45 RPM FORMAT RECORDS ONLY, HAS RECENTLY RELEASED 7 PBR005 - OTTAWA S NEWEST GARAGE RAWK QUARTET, NO PROBLEM SITUATION, THE LABEL S FIRST RELEASE SINCE It s seven minutes of pure punky, punchy garage rock with a twinge of psychedelia for good measure. Side A takes a kick at the can with lead track I Don t Like s confident, matter-offact lyrics, saucy delivery, jaunty guitar riffs and toe tapping, steady drum beats, reminiscent of Gino & The Goons and it has you ready to flip the record over to Side B by the echo of the last note. Short but sweet at a one minute and 35 seconds, Autonomy s reverb-tinged, angsty punk yelps, yet relaxed, twangy style guitar vibrations lead into the closer, Greed For Green. A direct and blunt reference to Western society s everlasting longing for money and material junk, it s thumping bass really gets your shoulders shaking along to the rhythm, leaving you wanting more tracks to dance, stomp, and sing along to. That s rock and roll! No Problem Situation has been jamming together since 2016, featuring Michael Delion on guitar and vocals, Jim Weiler on guitar, also sharing some vocal duties, Marc Dore on bass, and Richard Parks on drums. They ve appeared in numerous band incarnations together: Pretty Bad Records up-and-comers, Lone Pig and The Rhythm Sucklers, as well as G. Rogers and The Capital Dominion Radiators, The Forgetables, Turkey Baster, and Vapourizer to name drop a few past jam bands. In just a few short months No Problem Situation highlights a successful week-long community radio blitz and their single release show May 5th at The Record Centre, playing a 30-minute set for vinyl record and live music lovers alike. They ve laying down new material for a full length album and are making plans for shows in Montreal, Peterborough, Toronto, Kingston, and Ottawa by September s promising to be a cool rock and roll party; Pretty Bad Records Fall Fry-Up is being hosted at Irene s Pub, over two nights September 28 and 29. No Problem Situation, Ommie Jane, Saint Clare, Chris Landry & The Seasick Mommas will all grace the stage and more will be announced closer to the celebrations. 7 LOCAL LABELS CHANGING THE SCENE BY EVAN MCKAY FOR SOME MUSICIANS, BEING SIGNED TO A RECORD LABEL CAN BE EVERYTHING. IT CAN MEAN BIG TOURS, BIG ALBUM SALES, FOR- TUNE, AND FAME. It can also mean getting bogged down with contracts and legal grey areas or maybe even giving up creative control. So for artists that want to bypass traditional recording labels, what is there? Based out of Russell, Ont., Willow Sounds Recording is a membership based co-op recording label started by entrepreneur and musician Tara Shannon. Shannon has been a consultant in the Canadian music industry for close to 20 years and started Willow Sounds after she saw a need for guidance in the music industry and wanted to help young artists put together their business. Willow Sounds is a record label with an educational focus, meaning their main goal is to help artists start to see their musical career as a business and assist them in efficiently running their own small business. Everything is done on a consultant basis which means Willow Sounds doesn t take any credit or ownership for the artists creations. It s co-operative, so they are there to help and not to profit. The whole thing is about empowering artists as opposed to creating dependency, Shannon says. The idea is that I ve done a great job, when they don t need me anymore! Everything from the master recordings to record sales belong to the artist. Willow Sounds hands off approach gives artists freedom to create and explore without limitations that a typical label might employ. Shannon says one of the first things she ll do for artists is demystify and translate business language. A lot of artists will tend to shy away from very scary, sort of cold language, that corporate business uses. Market growth, customers, margins, profit, product. So once you equate those words to words that they understand in their artistic world, it empowers them to understand the elements of business and why it s important to think of themselves as a business. Musician and Willow Sounds member, Jessica Pearson, says Willow Sounds is different from other labels because it is focused on what the artist needs and what their goals are. I can be completely myself, I can be vulnerable with my writing and I know that Willow Sound Records and Tara Shannon only want what is best for me and my music, Pearson said. Where other labels need to release product that will make money back for them, they sometimes need to change your sound to fit the mold. Willow Sounds isn t about changing you, its about taking your music and making it the best it can be. Willow Sounds really challenges the norm set by large corporate recording labels. There s no A&R (Artists and Repertoire) person to impress and no image set out by the label. The artist only has to be concerned with the development of their own work. This is a lot different than the standard practice, says Shannon. Being signed to a record label is much more like being an employee of a company. You have no direct power, you just do your job, she says. BUCK-N-NICE BUCK THE TRENDS BY JARED DAVIDSON While Willow Sounds is unique in its approach, there are certainly other labels and collectives in Ottawa that are straying from the norm. One such label is Record Centre Records, owned and operated by John Thompson of The Record Centre, a shop located in Ottawa s Wellington West neighborhood. Record Centre Records is unusual in its approach to being a label because it never quite intended to be a label. With a passion for good sounding records, Record Centre Records grew out of ideas that Thompson said just seemed logical. For example, The Record Centre records many of their live in-store shows, some of which have actually made it onto vinyl. Starting as a record store, growing into a venue, and now a record label, The Record Centre makes sense in a music community such as Ottawa. Take Sparklesaurus s new LP, categorically number 33 on the label. After releasing their debut EP in the summer of 2016, the band became well known and well liked in the community, playing a number of shows at the storefront. Thompson says it just made sense to him. We already considered them a part of our community, which is important. We have this thing where, sure, it s a record store, we sell records and sell things but we also host bands and try to help out a bit (in the community). They were just a part of our community, Thompson said. It seemed like the logical thing to do! Record Centre Records differs from Willow Sounds in their approach, which is slightly more traditional than the co-op method, but it s still far away from what a traditional record label looks like. Record Centre Records exists and succeeds because of community. Ottawa has a close knit music community that allows artists, venues, and sometimes label owners to interact and connect with one another. Willow Sounds exists to create more of that community and spread knowledge and understanding that can become lost in the fine print of corporate labels. Both Willow Sound and Record Centre Records are pushing the limits of what a record label can and should be. Or maybe they re just simplifying it? BRENDON GRAVELINE, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS SAWBUCK, LIKES TO COMPARE THE HIP HOP GAME TO MOBILE GAMES. It s like when you come up against someone and you know they were just buying all those extra lives, he says. The game has become pay-to-win, he says. Graveline has found himself meeting idols and wishing he hadn t as their swagger is revealed to be smoke and mirrors. Graveline and DJ So Nice (known otherwise as Hassan Hamdan), make up Buck-N-Nice, one of Ottawa s hottest hip hop items. Having just released a sophomore album titled EMAG, which could be read ee-mag or game backwards. Because that s what the album is about: the game being backwards. We started to see that everything was pretty much all fugazi, Graveline says. People that we thought were doing things, weren t. And that s really frustrating for a hip hop group trying to put their craft first and treat it as an art. Four years ago, upon the release of their first album, Buck-N- Nice were jokingly comparing themselves to famous artists like Picasso. Name any great artist and you ll find that they put themselves in the art, said Hamdan, half-ironically. His point stands true Buck-N- Nice is about putting themselves in the music, creating the art as an extension of themselves. When their first album got some attention and they started getting calls, they answered them with skepticism in part due to the way they viewed their art. The voices on the other end of the line came bearing gifts: YouTube celebrity, articles, spins, and all that, they say. But, for them, this would be a betrayal of the spirit under which they had begun. They were trying to be artists, not products. Turning it down wasn t even a question for them. They decided they couldn t do stuff like compare themselves to influential painters and then turn around and engage in what they see as the age-old practice of paying for 15 minutes of fame. Hamdan and Graveline say that becoming a band in the 21st Century means getting offers from shady-sounding companies offering Facebook views, plays, spins, publicity, and essentially their firstborn child, all for a (relatively) small fee. Some people take a crack at these deals. Maybe that occasionally works out, but from what Buck-N-Nice were seeing, the payoff was often relatively minor and the results were often the promotion of subpar content. You could pay for the big wins, but you don t build those genuine relationships when you do that, says Hamdan. Connections play a role in their music as well. Both of Buck-N-Nice s albums are feature heavy, with verses and production from local notables such as Flight Distance, Prufrock Shadowrunner, Tragic, and Just Jamaal, among others. They ve also started to make connections in the hip hop scene across the country, getting plays on college radio and spins from bigger DJs. They stress that, rather than pay a promoter, they cut out the middle man and approached people directly, relying on the quality of their product. Both are veterans of the Ottawa scene, sporting clever lines and intricate beats. They released their album on Instagram, in part from that same spirit of collaboration and discussion, with an encouragement from community response. They found they were able to identify certain songs that resonated more with people, often simply by the number of comments. They are among the first to release an album entirely on Instagram, and they re excited to be doing something a little different. We re trying to do things that are current, without doing what s currently acceptable, says Graveline. In other words, they re playing the game by their own rules, while still playing the game. Catch Buck-n-Nice at their album release party for EMAG on July 28 at The 27 Club. OTTAWA BEAT - JULY

9 COMIC OF THE MONTH BY AUSTIN EVANS, AYESHA CHUBB & ZAAKIRAH CHUBB TEENS IN THE SCENE TEENS IN THE SCENE IS A GET- TO-KNOW-YOU FEATURE SERIES DIRECTED BY OUR CONTRIBUTOR, ZOË ARGIROPULOS-HUNTER. THROUGH HER BITE-SIZED INTERVIEWS AND EXPERIMENTAL FILM PORTRAITURE, ZOË WILL PUT A DIFFERENT MEMBER OF OUR COMMUNITY IN THE SPOTLIGHT EVERY MONTH TO GET THE INSIDE SCOOP ON WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE SCENE FROM A TEEN S PERSPECTIVE. THIS MONTH, ZOË PHOTOGRAPHED HER PAL BEN ASTORGA, AND CHATTED WITH HIM ABOUT COMING OF AGE IN CENTRETOWN. ZAH: How has living in Centretown during your teen years impacted your relationship with Ottawa s music community? BA: Living in Centretown has created so many possibilities for my social life. On top of being near so many creative and culturally vibrant communities like Chinatown and Little Italy, it has allowed me to easily access the different venues across Ottawa. Personally, my home acts as a liaison for the different social groups that go to different venues. I can easily bus to the Glebe or Old Ottawa South and just as easily walk to Pressed for some music on a mellow Sunday evening. It has given me exposure and the leisure to choose between different experiences and music scenes, from calming shoegaze all the way to head banging punk. ZAH: What venues have played a key role in some of your favourite memories from going to shows and why? BA: The most influential of them all has to be Pressed. It was my where I first experienced a show with my sister and will probably be the last venue I go to in Ottawa. It has brought so many of my friends together, who may have never met because of the coffee house. It was also a place where I discovered so many different bands and types of music that opened my eyes. Due to this I started playing guitar just to imitate the feeling of what it s like to perform in front of a crowd at that venue. It s a safe, friendly environment that I can t thank enough for the unison it has brought to my life ZAH: How has the Ottawa music scene changed in your eyes in the last few years? BA: The Ottawa music scene is kind of like an eternal teenager. It has mood swings, from mediocre to great shows every weekend. Two years ago, when it was in its it peak I was out every Friday and Saturday with friends learning about new music and lifestyles. Even when it is at a low, with shows once a month, it still acts as a reason to see friends and friends who have become family by bonding over music. Even if the shows have become rarer, it only makes them easier to savour and appreciate every minute. OTTAWA BEAT - JULY

14 THE ISRC ARTICLE BY BYRON PASCOE THE ARTICLE S PURPOSE IS TO SKIM THE SURFACE OF WHAT AN INTERNATIONAL STANDARD RE- CORDING CODE (ISRC) IS: HOW TO GET IT, HOW TO USE IT, AND WHY THIS PROCESS IS YET ANOTHER IMPORTANT ITEM ON YOUR MUSIC INDUSTRY DIY CHECK LIST. WHAT S AN ISRC? The ISRC is the globally recognized standard numbering system for sound recordings and music video recordings. It s the 12-digit alphanumeric code that acts as a digital fingerprint for each of those recordings. No other recording will have the same ISRC, and the ISRC won t change. Spoiler Alert: As further described below, digital services and retailers use ISRCs to track and identify recordings. As an independent artist not signed with a label yet, it is your responsibility as owner of your master recordings to get ISRCs assigned to each recording and video. WHERE DO I BEGIN? To get an ISRC Registrant Code, one must contact the National ISRC Agency for their territory. Here in Canada, the National ISRC Agency is CONNECT Music Licensing Service Inc. (on behalf of Music Canada). The ISRC Registrant Code is free, and CONNECT offers a simple and quick ISRC registrant code application online. The questions asked are: 1. Do you own the master rights to the audio recordings and /or music video recordings to which you intend to assign ISRCs? 2. Are you or your company based in Canada? 3. Have you or your company previously applied for and received an ISRC Registrant code? I answered Yes, Yes and No, and within a few minutes received an noting my application had been approved. My ISRC Registrant Code was contained in the attached documentation. I received a three letter Registrant Code for audio and music video recordings. It s not ABC or GGG, but it s in that 3-letter format. 14 OTTAWA BEAT - JULY 2018 ILLUSTRATION BY DON DIMANLIG I was informed that, Using this Registrant Code you are responsible for creating and assigning a unique ISRC to each of your audio and music video recordings. Connect Music Licensing does not require you to provide a list of the codes you have assigned, as we do not keep a record of your individual ISRCs. You are solely responsible for keeping a detailed record of all of the codes you create and assign. The same ISRC should never be assigned to more than one musical work. If you are not the master rights owner, but rather are acting on their behalf, such as a manager, producer or distributor, you can seek approval from CONNECT to become a Third Party Registrant. STRUCTURING THE ISRCS If my Registrant Code was ABC, then my first ISRC in 2018 would be CAABC and my second recording would CAABC CA is the ISRC Country Code for Canada. ABC is my Registrant Code. 18 is the Year of Reference (the year the ISRC is assigned, generally the year the mastering process for the recording is finalized). The and are Designation Codes for the first two recordings. We do not need to apply for a new Registrant Code each year. Rather, we change the year of reference annually. My first ISRC in 2019 will be CAABC The audio recording and music video for a track should be assigned separate ISRCs. A new ISRC is to be assigned to each re-mix, edit or new version of a recording, or if there are multiple sound recordings produced in the same session. Regarding changes in playing time, according to CON- NECT, When there is a change of playing time musically or artistically, a new ISRC should be allocated. The recommended threshold is 10 seconds. If you have recordings which weren t assigned ISRCs, they can be provided an ISRC by the present owner of the rights to the recordings, prior to a re-release. The Year of Reference isn t the year the recording was made, but rather the year it was allocated an ISRC. If more than one person or company owns a master, there should only be one ISRC allocated, so the co-owners must decide which owner s Registrant Code to use. WHAT TO DO WITH THE ISRCS The ISRC should be embedded into all audio and video works at the final stage of audio mastering / video editing and included in all relevant documentation concerning a recording. More specifically, the person mastering your music can embed the ISRCs into the data of your master CD, and any duplicate you made of the master CD will have the ISRCs included in the CD data. The ISRC should also be included in the metadata of your digital song files. Provide ISRCs when uploading audio or video recordings to digital services or retailers. Digital distributors, such as CD Baby and TuneCore, have been given permission to assign ISRCs to recordings of their users. If a recording provided to a distributor was assigned an ISRC code by the distributor, subject to the reasons allowing a new ISRC, the ISRC stays with that recording indefinitely. WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? ACCOLADES, FUNDING, BRAGGING RIGHTS, AND MORE! Nielsen s SoundScan tracks sales of music and music video products throughout the U.S. and Canada, regarding physical and digital sales. It s also the sales source for the Billboard music charts. As such, to have a chance at making the charts, your release must be registered with Sound- Scan using your ISRCs for the individual tracks. If you don t register then your sales figures are not counted, and you remain invisible to this system. Another vital part of tracking sales is getting a UPC barcode for the album, which can be done on your own, or you can use get from your distribution partners such as CD Baby and TuneCore. SoundScan is also important and helpful for grants such as FACTOR. FACTOR s Discography Sales Calculator (Version 3.0) is mandatory for reporting release sales. FACTOR has indicated that for North American physical and digital retail sales, Clients should enter their sales numbers for North American retail (i.e. anything captured by SoundScan), but they no longer need to upload proof of these specific sales to the artist profile. Note that most digital retailers (e.g. itunes, Tunecore, Bandcamp) report to SoundScan, so you do not need to provide additional proof documentation for those sales. While the most important to-do list item is to create music you love, create that to-do list (now!), and do include this one. -- Edwards PC, Creative Law is a boutique law firm provides legal services to Music, Film, Animation, TV, Digital Media, Game, Software and Publishing industry clients.
