Nowhere is this more evident than in the schoos seected to be PLTW Mode Schoos. Coectivey, they encompass the best that PLTW has to offer to today s midde and high schoo students. Individuay, they represent outstanding exampes of how schoos can impement PLTW s rigorous STEM education program to meet the unique needs of their own community. This brochure honors and ceebrates the PLTW Mode Schoos cass of by introducing some of the highights of their inspiring and exempary programs. It aso provides important background on the Mode Schoos program, incuding key areas for judging and seection. A of which can hep existing PLTW schoos, as we as those just getting started, to grow and enhance their own unique PLTW programs schoos from 23 different states submitted nominations. Nominated schoos were judged against 37 performance indicators, within nine quaity categories. A pane of PLTW State Leaders and Affiiate Directors ed the evauation process that was conducted in two stages over a six-week period. A nationa footprint of diversity and success. Today, there are PLTW programs in more than 4,000 schoos across the country, making it the nation s eading provider of rigorous STEM education for midde and high schoo students. One of the main reasons for this outstanding distinction and impressive number of impementations is the abiity of the innovative PLTW curricuum and teacher and counseor support services to effectivey address the unique needs of different schoo environments serving diverse student popuations in varied geographic ocations. Indeed, you find that PLTW Mode Schoos, incuding this year s recipients, come in a shapes, sizes and ocations, heping to demonstrate that midde schoos and high schoos in any state or district across the country can succeed with PLTW.

3 PLTW Mode Schoos Anderson Districts 1 & 2 Career and Technoogy Center, South Caroina: Through the PLTW Biotechnica Engineering and Principes of Engineering programs, high schoo students at Anderson are studying the process of producing biodiese fue from oive and vegetabe oi, as we as earning how to convert a gasoine engine to a propane engine. Carence Midde Schoo, New York: The addition of PLTW s newest midde schoo curricuum, Energy and the Environment, which exposes students to the consequences of using nonrenewabe energy sources nationay and gobay, prompted a change in cassroom behavior. The eadership roe in the cassroom was ceary assumed by a different group the girs. Cear Springs High Schoo, Texas: PLTW students are earning how to grow food in space to hep sustain astronauts on ong fights. This three-year-ong project in deveoping and testing aeroponics and hydroponics incudes designing a food growth chamber that PLTW students wi test in a zero gravity environment on NASA s Boeing 727 fying science aboratory through the agency s Reduced Gravity Student Fight Opportunities Program. Davenport West High Schoo, Iowa: Davenport s 39-person Partnership Team (aso caed an Advisory Counci) provides critica funding support, incuding funding the midde schoo PLTW Gateway Academy program to get kids interested in STEM fieds even earier, and schoarships to cover costs associated with earning coege credit for financiay disadvantaged students. Guiver Schoos, Forida: Guiver s PLTW students within the Engineering Department undertook an initiative to deveop a sef-sufficient water purification system for Haiti. The device empoys an utravioet fiter powered by a soar pane, and is encosed in a mobie chassis for portabiity. The device has been deivered to a chidren s hospita in Haiti. The program appeas to the top 90% of students in other words, everyone. And the most recent PLTW teachers recruited from within incude an art teacher, two math teachers and two computer science teachers. Aong with a ot of hard work on the part of many dedicated facuty members and administrators, the PLTW Mode Schoos embody a set of important quaities and characteristics. Many of these refect key eements of the performance indicators outined in PLTW s Nationa Certification appication, and were used as part of judging and seection criteria. For exampe, the PLTW program at a number of Mode Schoos is being fuy impemented, with more than 25% of the student popuation participating. Partnerships with business and industry and postsecondary institutions are in pace and activey supporting the curricuum. Professiona deveopment is a mainstay of most Scott County Schoos, Kentucky: Scott County has created a unique district-wide PLTW impementation using the concept of viages PLTW Pre-Engineering Viage, PLTW Biomedica Sciences Viage and Media Arts Viage. Designed to provide a more intimate and more focused earning environment for students, this approach aso promotes greater coaboration between teachers and greater integration of the discipines. Southwest Academy For 21st Century Exceence, Wisconsin: This idea soution for sma rura schoos features a consortium of seven schoos and Southwest Wisconsin Technica Coege that cooperativey share important resources, such as software, equipment and materias. For more information about our Modes Schoos program and this year s recipients, visit Tusa Technoogy Center, Okahoma: Tusa Tech recenty formed an aiance with Tusa Community Coege (TCC) and Okahoma State University Tusa (OSU-Tusa). The Tusa Engineering Three (Te3) is a aiance that supports a seamess transition into TCC and then OSU, a credits moving with the student. A K-16 committee has been formed to dovetai PLTW curricuum with corresponding coege courses. Washington County Technica High Schoo, Maryand: A piot site for PLTW Biomedica Sciences, WCTHS aso offers a fu compement of PLTW engineering courses. Washington buids on the rea-word nature of the curricuum by giving students the opportunity to work for Hagerstown Coege s InnovaBio/MD incubator. They re not mimicking a rea research ab; they are a rea ab.
