3 Here s something a bit different a Dutching System. For anyone who hasn t come across the idea before, Dutching is a way of backing two or more horses in a race, to make a profit no matter which one wins. It s a sort of safety bet, an insurance bet for the punters who are averse to taking big risks and are content with steady, if unspectacular, profits. Why is it called dutching? There are different theories, but the one I like best concerns Dutch Schultz, a New York mobster of the 1920s and 30s, who was involved in the numbers racket there. He did something along those lines to manipulate the numbers result and gain the maximum profit for the racketeers. He was eventually gunned down in a gang-land shoot out in 1935, leaving a fortune in a sealed metal container that was buried by his henchmen in the Catskill Mountains. To this day, legend has it that his hidden treasure has never been found. We ll call this Dutching System Hidden Treasure, in his memory.

4 You can use any newspaper to operate the system, but I d recommend the Racing Post as I firmly believe that their betting forecasts are the most accurate of all. The system depends on, a large extent, the accuracy of the betting forecast. If you prefer the online version of Racing Post you can access that here: The Racing Post website is free and for what we will be using it for you only need the basic membership which is free. You can become a VIP member that costs money but that is totally up to you. Because this is a backing system any Bookmaker can be used so if you have a Bookmaker that you already use then it s ok, you can still use that one. If you are completely new to this my advice would be to use:

5 However, due to the competition of these bookies I would advise you look around for the best promotional deal where you get money back offers or even free bets. Though be warned, they often have terms and conditions hidden behind wonderful advertisements and you may not always get what you thought you were getting. All races can be used initially, but we ll apply special filters to reduce to those races we ll be betting on later. The first step is to note the first three horses named in the betting forecast. Just that the first three named, not the fourth even though, it may have the same forecast price as the third named.

6 To do this you need to follow the link to racing post or simply Google racing post then once on the site click on Today s Meetings. The Meetings for the day will appear and clicking on card will put you onto the race card for each race.

7 You will then find the Betting Forecast at the bottom of the runners Of these three horses delete the one with the worst form figure last time out, using current season s form. Horses which have not run in the current season are considered as being unplaced last time out. But there s one important exception. If four or more horses in the race have run before, current or previous season s form, then the newcomer for the season is counted as having won its previous race

8 The reason for this is that, a horse that has never run before is not usually considered a favourite because nobody knows how it will perform, so if the odds are low then there is obviously something about this newcomer that has punters betting on it. Here s an example of a newcomer with no previous form. Where two horses have the same form figure, delete the one quoted at the longest odds. For example, if the third named horse won last time out, and the first and second in the betting were unplaced, then the second in the betting would be deleted. If all three have the same form figure, then the third named in the forecast is deleted. It may sound slightly complicated, but in practice it s quite simple. It means you are left with the first and second in the forecast, the first and third or the second and third. And

9 these are the two horses you Dutch, by backing them both to win. What we have learned so far is a general method of selection, but we would certainly not be backing in every race. Due to the nature of horse racing being so unpredictable only a fool would try to get the winner of every race. We have to be selective to have a good chance of making a profit. The first and most important thing we must do is select only those races in which at least one of our two qualifiers won last time out or counted as won, under the newcomer exception rule. 10 We can still be more selective by backing in non-handicap races only. Finding races that are Non Handicap is simple. Whilst on Racing Post look at the name of the race. The screenshot below shows the races for the day at Sandown. Each race has a sponsor and the race information within the title. For example distance, class and type of race such as Chase, Hurdle or Flat. In the 2:20 you will notice that the race is a Handicap Hurdle and the second race at 2:55 is also a Handicap but a Chase. It doesn t matter if the race is hurdle or chase or any other but we do not want a Handicap race.

11 However, race 3 at 3:30 does not mention Handicap so we can click this and have a look at whether or not the rest of the criteria can be met. Finally, we could limit races to those with no more than 12 runners. To find out the number of runners in a race we simply click on the card and look here: Using these filters the number of bets will be hugely reduced, but the number of winners will be proportionally much higher; and the profits much greater. How to stake them will depend on the prices available. Clearly you should have a bigger stake on the shorter price and a

12 smaller stake on the larger price, aiming for a balanced profit no matter which one wins. The screenshot below shows a basic staking plan which can be tweaked accordingly For example, if the first named A was 7-4 and the other B was 4-1, then put 2 points on A and 1 point on B. If A wins we make 3 ½ points but lose 1 point on B, making an overall profit of 2 ½ points. If B wins we make 4 points but lose 2 points on A, making a profit of 2 points. That is the sort of balance we are looking for. If one is more than slightly odds on then I d suggest no bet, because a profit might be difficult to achieve. You need to use your own head when deciding on placing the bets. If you don t think that the bet is worth it don t do it. Only back when you feel that the reward outweighs the risk

13 Let s recap now. For preference use the Racing Post. 1. Eliminate any race where there is not a winner last time out in the first three named in the betting forecast. Remember to include as a winner the newcomer as explained in the exception rule. (Page 6) 2. Eliminate any race that is a handicap. 3. Eliminate any race with more than 12 runners. NOTE. You must apply Rule 1. You can apply Rules 2 and 3 depending on how many bets you wish to have. 4. In qualifying races make a note of the first three horses named in the betting forecast. 5. From these three delete the one with the worst form figure last time out, using the current season s form. Horses which have not run in the current season are considered as being unplaced last time out. Except (and this is important), 6. If four or more horses in the race have run before, current or previous season, then the newcomer for the season is counted as having won last time out. 7. Where two horses have the same form figure, delete the one quoted at the longer odds. 8. If all three have the same form figure then the third named in the forecast betting is deleted. 9. You are now left with two horses to back. 10. Back them both with balanced stakes to make approximately the same profit on either winner.

14 Contrary to what you might expect the system produces winners at all prices up to 16-1 or more. But remember, don t bet if the prices are such that there is no opportunity to make a worthwhile profit.
