SILOS ARE FOR GRAIN, NOT KNOWLEDGE Madelyn Bell November 2014 APSG NO VEMBER N OVEMBER

AGENDA Need for shared knowledge More sources more variety Engaging the company Closing Shameless plug APSG NO VEMBER N OVEMBER

SHARING IS ALREADY DONE Internal geodetics experts or teams Seismic is monitored for geodetic quality Operated wells are surveyed as per company specifications Internal or external courses are made available/mandatory Wide knowledge of the examples of geodetics gone wrong Data Management teams and Master Data Management Lease ownership referenced to licensed data APSG NO VEMBER N OVEMBER

COLORADO OIL & GAS The latitude and longitude coordinates in decimal degrees to an accuracy and precision of five (5) decimals of a degree using the North American Datum (NAD) of 1983 (e.g.; latitude N, longitude W), Position Dilution of Precision (PDOP) reading, instrument operator s name and the date of the measurement of the as drilled well location shall be reported on the Form 5. If GPS technology is utilized to determine the latitude and longitude, all GPS data shall meet the requirements set forth in Rule 215. a. through h. APSG NO VEMBER N OVEMBER

VARIETY IS THE BANE OF QUALITY North Dakota requires NAD 83 or NAD 27 Pennsylvania required NAD 27 until March 2010, now NAD 83 Wyoming geographic files are WGS 84, wells are NAD 27 Florida will take any datum as long as it is specified New York and Louisiana requires NAD 83 Alaska and BSEE require NAD 27 or NAD 83 APSG NO VEMBER N OVEMBER

WEB SOURCED DATA Download lease ownership from state and federal websites Download pipeline files Download well data Download directional surveys License well, ownership, directional data from multiple sources APSG NO VEMBER N OVEMBER

IHS PETRA & ENERDEQ Petra - V Grid files can now be datum shifted and re-projected Enerdeq uses the IHS Land Grid and Lat/Longs for digital outputs. Seamless 1 :24,000 scale grid based on grid from WhiteStar referenced to NAD27. Clients receive IHS Lat/Longs for free in all U.S. data regions except Texas and Louisiana. Those regions require a subscription. IHS delivers P2ES/Tobin SuperBase and BaseMap USATM entitled Lat/Longs to P2ES clients. APSG NO VEMBER N OVEMBER

DRILLING INFO They must now be converted to values from the projected coordinate system the survey was created in, in Texas the State Plane Coordinate system NAD 1927 is the most commonly used. Once the values have been converted to State Plane in X,Y feet they can then be easily transformed and mapped in any desired projection or datum. We transform them to the WGS 84 (World geologic survey1984) datum so that they can be more easily displayed on the Drillinginfo website. APSG NO VEMBER N OVEMBER

INTERFACE WITH THE BUSINESS Data management versus self load into interpretation systems Actively engage with each geographic business area to understand what requirements are in place for operated and partner well surface surveys Review licensed data used by the business unit, what is the datum delivery per source; how data is converted by each source Understand where the business also directly seeks data from web sources and how that data is converted Understand the analysis packages direct load options for converting data APSG NO VEMBER N OVEMBER

CONCLUSION Successful geodetic deployment within a company may be defined as everyone knows your name Success may also be defined as knowing everyone in the business unit Success may also be defined as clear documented guidelines for all sources of data that are used in building business decisions APSG NO VEMBER N OVEMBER

SHAMELESS PLUG PPDM and the National Data Repository are building a set of open standard Data Rules The Rules are open to everyone Seeking members for focus teams (@ 20 hours now until the end of January) to provide feedback on the Rules website functionality, classification systems, governance of the rules, identifying Subject Matter Experts Rules@ppdm.org APSG NO VEMBER N OVEMBER
