Texts for Scriptural Reasoning 11. Law The Scriptural Reasoning Society 1
Exodus 23: Thou shalt not utter a false report; put not thy hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness. 2 Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou bear witness in a cause to turn aside after a multitude to pervert justice; 3 neither shalt thou favour a poor man in his cause. {S} 4 If thou meet thine enemy s ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again. {S} 5 If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under its burden, thou shalt forbear to pass by him; thou shalt surely release it with him. {S} 6 Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of thy poor in his cause. 7 Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not; for I will not justify the wicked. 8 And thou shalt take no gift; for a gift blindeth them that have sight, and perverteth the words of the righteous. 9 And a stranger shalt thou not oppress; for ye know the heart of a stranger, seeing ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. 10 And six years thou shalt sow thy land, and gather in the increase thereof; 11 but the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie fallow, that the poor of thy people may eat; and what they leave the beast of the field shall eat. In like manner thou shalt deal with thy vineyard, and with thy oliveyard. 12 Six days thou shalt do thy work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest; that thine ox and thine ass may have rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed. 1 Jewish Publications Society Tanakh (1917 Edition) 1
Deuteronomy 4: "And now, O Israel, give heed to the statutes and the ordinances which I teach you, and do them; that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, gives you. 2 You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it; that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you. 3 Your eyes have seen what the LORD did at Ba'al-pe'or; for the LORD your God destroyed from among you all the men who followed the Ba'al of Pe'or; 4 but you who held fast to the LORD your God are all alive this day. 5 Behold, I have taught you statutes and ordinances, as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should do them in the land which you are entering to take possession of it. 6 Keep them and do them; for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, `Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.' 7 For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? 8 And what great nation is there, that has statutes and ordinances so righteous as all this law which I set before you this day? 9 "Only take heed, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things which your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life; make them known to your children and your children's children how on the day that you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, the LORD said to me, `Gather the people to me, that I may let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live upon the earth, דברים 14-1:4 א ו ע תּ ה י שׂ ר א ל, שׁ מ ע א ל - ה ח קּ ים ו א ל - ה מּ שׁ פּ ט ים, א שׁ ר אָנ כ י מ ל מּ ד א ת כ ם, ל ע שׂוֹת -- ל מ ע ן תּ ח יוּ, וּב את ם ו יר שׁ תּ ם א ת - ה אָר ץ, א שׁ ר י הו ה א ל ה י א ב ת יכ ם, נ ת ן ל כ ם.
and that they may teach their children so.' 11 And you came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, while the mountain burned with fire to the heart of heaven, wrapped in darkness, cloud, and gloom. 12 Then the LORD spoke to you out of the midst of the fire; you heard the sound of words, but saw no form; there was only a voice. 13 And he declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, that is, the ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone. 14 And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and ordinances, that you might do them in the land which you are going over to possess. 6 Galatians 5: For you, brethren, have been called to liberty 2 ; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh 3, but through love serve one another. 14 For all the law is fulfilled 4 in one word, even in this: You shall love your neighbour as yourself. 15 But if you bite and devour 5 one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another! 16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust 6 of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery 7, fornication 8, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 1 New King James Version 2 evleuqeri,a eleutheria {el yoo ther ee' ah} liberty to do or to omit 3 sa,rx sarx {sarx} flesh, the sensuous nature of man, "the animal nature" 4 plhro,w pleroo {play ro' o} to make full, to fill up, i.e. to fill to the full, to cause to abound 5 katesqi,w (katesthio) to eat up, ate, consume, devour 6 evpiqumi,a epithumia {ep ee thoo mee' ah} desire, craving, longing, desire for what is forbidden, lust 7 moicei,a moicheia {moy khi' ah} adultery 8 pornei,a porneia {por ni' ah} illicit sexual intercourse, adultery, fornication, homosexuality 5
Matthew 5: You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. 39 But I tell you not to resist 2 an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. 40 If anyone wants to sue 3 you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. 41 And whoever compels 4 you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away. 43 You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy. 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse 5 you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute 6 you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil 7 and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? 48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect. 1 New King James Version 2 avnqi, sthmi anthistemi {anth is' tay mee} to set one's self against, to withstand, resist, oppose to set against 3 kri,nw krino {kree' no} to separate, put asunder, to pick out, select, choose, to approve, esteem, to prefer, to be of opinion, deem, think, to be of opinion, to determine 4 avggareu,w aggareuo {ang ar yew' o} to employ a courier, dispatch a mounted messenger, press into public service, compel to go 5 katara, omai kataraomai {kat ar ah' om ahee} to curse, doom, imprecate evil upon 6 diw,kw dioko {dee o' ko} to make to run or flee, put to flight, drive away, to run swiftly in order to catch a person or thing, to run after, to press on: figuratively of one who in a race runs swiftly to reach the goal, to pursue (in a hostile manner), in any way whatever to harass, trouble, molest one, to persecute 7 ponhro,j poneros {pon ay ros'} full of labours, annoyances, hardships, pressed and harassed by labours, bringing toils, annoyances, perils; of a time full of peril to Christian faith and steadfastness; causing pain and trouble 6
Matthew 22: Then the Pharisees went and took counsel how to entangle 1 him in his talk. 16 And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Hero'di-ans, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are true 2, and teach the way of God truthfully, and care for no man; for you do not regard the position 3 of men. 17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful 4 to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?" 18 But Jesus, aware of their malice 5, said, "Why put me to the test 6, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the money for the tax." And they brought him a coin. 20 And Jesus said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?" 21 They said, "Caesar's." Then he said to them, "Render 7 therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." 22 When they heard it, they marveled; and they left him and went away. 23 The same day Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection 8 ; and they asked him a question 24 saying, "Teacher, Moses said, `If a man dies, having no children, his brother must marry the widow, and raise up children for his brother.' 25 Now there were seven brothers among us; the first married, and died, and having no children left his wife to his brother. 26 So too the second and third, down to the seventh. 27 After them all, the woman died. 1 pagideusosin subj. act. aorist pagideuo to lay a snare, entrap 2 alethes unconcealed, true 3 prosopon face, visage 4 exestin pres. ind. act. to be allowed, permissible 5 ponerian badness, bad state or condition 6 peirazete pres. ind. act. peirazo to put to the test 7 apodote aorist imp. apodidomi to give up, give back 8 anastasin raising up Κατα Μαθθαιον 22: τοτε πορευθεντες οι φαρισαιοι συµβουλιον ελαβον οπως αυτον παγιδευσωσιν εν λογω. 7
28 In the resurrection, therefore, to which of the seven will she be wife? For they all had her." 29 But Jesus answered them, "You are wrong, because you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God, 32 `I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not God of the dead 9, but of the living 10." 33 And when the crowd heard it, they were astonished at his teaching. 34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sad'ducees, they came together. 35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, to test him. 36 "Teacher, which is the great commandment 11 in the law?" 37 And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul 12, and with all your mind This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like 14 it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend 15 all the law and the prophets." 28 εν τη αναστασει ουν τινος των επτα εσται γυνη; παντες γαρ εσχον αυτην. 9 theos nekron God of the dead 10 alla zonton but rather of the living 11 entole injunction, order, command, behest 12 psuche breath, spirit 13 dianoia thought, mind 14 homoia resembling, similar 15 krematai pres. ind. mid/pass. kremannumi to hang, hang up 8
The Table (Quran 5) Verily, we have sent down the Law (Towrah) wherein are guidance 16 and light. By it did the prophets who professed Islam 17 judge the Jews 18 ; and the doctors 19 and the teachers 20 judged by that portion of the Book of God, of which they were the keepers and the witnesses. Therefore, O Jews! 21 fear not men but fear Me; and barter not away my signs 22 for a mean price! And whoso will not judge by what God hath sent down such are the Infidels And therein have we enacted for them, "Life 24 for life, and eye for eye, and nose for nose, and ear for ear, and tooth for tooth, and for wounds retaliation:" Whoso shall compromise 25 it as alms shall have therein the expiation 26 of his sin; and whoso will not judge by what God hath sent down such are the transgressors. 16 huda guidance, divine gift of grace the term has the soteriological character of Faith or Grace in the New Testament 17 alladhina aslamu those who submitted. 11 46 And in the footsteps of the prophets caused we Jesus, the son of Mary, to follow, confirming the law which was before him 27 : and we gave him the Evangel with its guidance and light, confirmatory of the preceding Law 28 ; a guidance and warning to those who fear God; 47 And that the people of the Evangel may judge according to what God hath sent down therein. And whoso will not judge by what God hath sent down such are the perverse. 48 And to thee we have sent down the Book of the Koran with truth, confirmatory of previous Scriptures, and their safeguard. Judge therefore between them by what God hath sent down, and follow not their desires by deserting the truth which hath come unto thee. To every one of you have we given a Law 29 and a beaten track 30. And if God had pleased He had surely made you all one people; but He would test you by what He hath given to each. Be emulous, then, in good deeds. To God shall ye all return, and He will tell you concerning the subjects of your disputes. 27 bayna yadaihi lit. between his hands 28 tawra Torah 29 shir a lit. way root: sh-r- road, path to water same meaning as shari a 30 minhaj programme, way of life, discipline 10
Sahih al-bukhari The Book of Exegesis of the Quran Narrated to me Ibrahīm bin al Mundhir, narrated to us Abu D amrah, narrated to us Mūsa bin Uqbah, of Nāfi, of Abd Allah bin Umar (God is pleased with them): That the Jews brought to the Prophet (peace be upon him) a man from among them and a woman, who had both committed unlawful sexual intercourse 32 ; and he said to them, How do you deal with whomsoever commits unlawful sexual intercourse from among you? They said, We blacken them both 33 and beat them both. So he said, Do you not find in the Torah stoning? They said, We do not find in it anything; so said to them Abd Allah bin Salām 34, You have lied! So bring the Torah and recite it, if you are truthful; so their teacher 35 who was teaching it to them placed his palm upon the verse of stoning, and began to read what was below his hand and what was behind it, and did not read the verse of stoning; so he 36 snatched his hand from the verse of stoning and said, What is this? And when they saw that they said, It is the verse of stoning, and he 37 ordered for them both and they were stoned close to where the biers are placed near at the mosque; and I saw her companion bowing over her to protect her from the stones. 31 Translation by Muhammad Yusuf 32 zāniyā to commit any form of sexual intercourse outside lawful marriage (dual form of the verb) 33 nuh ammimuhuma we blacken them both (dual form of the verb), the traditional practice of blackening faces with soot as a mark of disgrace 34 Companion of the Prophet who was a Jewish convert to Islam 35 mudāris teacher, form III active participle connoting study together with someone 36 Some commentators consider this to refer to Abd Allah bin Salām, others the Prophet himself 37 Most commentators consider this to refer to the Prophet 11
