1 Public Health Services Administration Division is in partnership with the community to promote and safeguard the health and wellness of the people of Mendocino County. The Administration Division is responsible for the oversight of all Public Health programs through policy development, leadership, fiscal management and technical assistance. In addition to oversight, the Administration Division includes vital statistics; data collection and reporting; chronic disease, tobacco and injury prevention; medical marijuana identification cards; disaster preparedness; and Prevention and Planning Unit (PAPU) that uses evidencebased best practices to address individual, social and environmental factors that underlie and contribute to chronic disease in Mendocino County and preventing and reducing substance abuse. MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN FY Combined the leadership to a Health Services Branch that incorporated the Public Health and Mental Health as one Director. Compiled, published and posted the 2012 Community Health Status Report (CHSR) for Mendocino County. Launched the Healthy Mendocino website in January, providing a useful tool of evaluating the health and wellness of Mendocino County residents. Conducted a Request for Proposal for a part-time Mendocino County Public Health Officer. Contracted with two local physicians to serve as Deputy Public Health Officers, with one of the physicians to handle all communicable disease outbreaks/prevention for Mendocino County. Started discussions with Sonoma County Public Health to utilize canned Public Health Officer Prevention recommendations and notifications to the community. Promoted healthy behaviors with community partners and schools, utilizing State Grant funding and objectives by focusing on Tobacco Free Living, Healthy Eating and Active Living, High Impact Evidence-based Clinical and Preventive Services, and creating and promoting a Healthy and Safe Physical Environment. Applied for Office of Traffic Safety Grant that would promote safe pedestrian and bicycling awareness with the goal of reducing number of collisions and injuries that involve bicycles and pedestrians. Worked with local policy-makers, youth, and community members to promote and implement municipal zoning changes and school district policies that support increased access to a healthy food environment through ongoing coalitions and advocacy. Focus on reducing and controlling the risk factors for cardiovascular disease including high blood pressure, diabetes, and tobacco use. Public Health and Social Services collaborated to improve community nutrition knowledge and increase access to healthy foods among vulnerable populations. Promoted and advocated for a tobacco policy to address tobacco retailer density and smoke-free multiunit housing in Mendocino County. Provided training in the community on the prevention of bullying in schools. Promoted media literacy about alcohol consumption, promoted an alcohol outlet licensing moratorium and raised community awareness about alcohol consumption in Mendocino County. Provided a research brief on the health effects of alcohol outlet density and on health equity and social determinants of health. Hired a Senior Public Health Analyst that will provide epidemiology and data support for Mendocino County GOALS/OBJECTIVES FOR FY Continue to serve on the Healthy Mendocino committee for promotion and content of the Healthy Mendocino website. Continue to recruit for a part-time Public Health Officer for Mendocino County. Continue to explore opportunities of shared resources with Sonoma County. Establish voluntary smoke-free housing policy by working with multi-unit housing owners and managers throughout Mendocino County. Increase healthy eating and active living among youth and adults in Mendocino County. Build capacity for existing community coalition through training on underage drinking, cultural competency, and environmental prevention and by establishing a model program to change community practices and policies to reduce teen access to alcohol. Continue to research and apply for grants that promote prevention and public health wellness in Mendocino County.
