2 Spanish IPR examples We have chosen the open source option: Python Why Python? Easy to learn and understand for not it people and code can be freely used and shared. Zones: using Dr Mooney s Script (Ireland) UTD: Python Script to transform the data stored in our ORACLE database to the XML schema. 2

3 Spanish Zones The XML file has been created using the Python program shared by Dr Peter Mooney (Ireland). The Script is easy to use, python code is simple to understand (and can be easily modified) and it is free. ESRI Shapefile of the Spanish Zones (with some data required by the IPR Schema for Zones stored in the DBF file) was exported to a GML file using an Open Source Geographic Information System. (Quantum GIS) 3

4 Spanish Zones The Script operates over the GML file creating the XML file. very little pre-configuration work was required to run the script correctly: Match the attribute names in the original shapefile with the names of the attribute in the python script. Complete the information relative to every particular country (Responsible Party: Contacts, address, etc.. ). In languages with accents, Ñ and other symbols, it is necessary to change the encoding (Ascii is the python default encoding), for the Spanish example iso encoding was used. 5 Spain UTD Spain has created a simple Python script to do the UTD example. The code can be found in the CDR in the following link: The program extracts the information from our ORACLE database, transforms the data to the IPR format and put the information into the correct place of the XML schema. The script is not prepared for general use (like Peter s script) but it can be easily adapted by modifying the queries, the database connection, etc.. 5

6 Spain UTD The general structure of the script is: 1. A connection to the AQ Spanish Database is created via ODBC (also can be used for other databases: SQL Server, MySQL, Access..). 2. Some SQL select statements are executed to obtain : UTD metainformation (sampling point, measurement configuration, feature of interest, units etc..) In order to simplify the query, a view was created in the ORACLE database to aggregate all the information relative ot UTD metainformation. The raw data. The table storing the hourly data is similar to DEM s hourly data: Station code+pollutant+measurement configuration+ 24 values and validation codes. 3. The initial and the final exportation dates are indicated to the program. A XML file is created and the XML header is written. 4. A template of the XML schema is written in this file and the information of the queries is introduced into the correct labels. The mapping used is similar to the UK example showed in the last IPR meeting. 6
