To support service users to promote their recovery from mental ill health, maintaining them in the community environment and helping them build their own support networks. To support service users in identifying their needs and to work towards their identified goals working to the Recovery Model and using agreed values and skills to underpin their day-to-day activities. To support drop-in sessions in the dedicated Centres and in the community to engage with service users and identify need. Work in partnership with the support staff at THT and St Peter s House to meet service users needs, with the support of the Services and Development Manager. To facilitate and develop emotional wellbeing support groups and workshops. To utilise the deployment of volunteers, therapists and resources pertinent to support services. To ensure services are maintained in accordance with Service Level Agreements, grants and contracts with contracts with funding agencies and organisational policies and procedures. In line with Financial Standing Orders. Assist the Services and Development Manager in formulating the annual budget and monitoring expenditure expense against budget. Liaise with statutory health & social services, local authorities and other voluntary agencies. Attend meetings externally and internally in respect of service user services. 30 hours per week, some flexibility. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required with time off given in lieu. Permanent contract subject to funding and satisfactory completion of a 6 month probationary period. Circa 21,000, pro-rata (subject to annual review) according to relevant experience. Salaries are paid one month in arrears on 25 th each month. A contribution equivalent to 5% of pensionable salary will be paid into the scheme of the appointee s choice on successful completion of the probationary period.

2 Expenses: Holiday Entitlement: Sickness Allowance: Training: Supervision: Mileage and out-of-pocket expenses undertaken on behalf of Positive Action will be paid in accordance with PA s Expenses Policy. 25 days paid, increasing by one day per year of service up to a maximum of 30 days plus statutory days, pro-rata. 15 days paid, pro-rata, thereafter Statutory Sick Pay (SSP). Attend training and skills development opportunities complementary to the post with the aim of personal development and the development of services. Attend regular internal supervision with the Services and Development Manager and/or Chief Executive and external supervision with the Mental Health User Development Service (MHUDS) Manager as a personal support mechanism, to develop self awareness and aid organisational development. Attend staff meetings and annual appraisal.

3 Duties Overarching Principles To provide accessible psychological support to service users, demonstrating a greater understanding of living with HIV. To contribute to holistic health and social care support by working in partnership with other professionals and services. To assist individuals in maintaining good mental health thus contributing to their overall wellbeing. To liaise with mental health services and advocate on behalf of individuals, where necessary, to ensure access to appropriate mainstream services. To develop care and referral pathways to professional partners and mainstream services. To assist individuals to maintain their independence. To assist individuals in the development of coping strategies and problem solving skills. To assist individuals extend their social networks and support to overcome social isolation. To promote opportunities for social inclusion. To facilitate and develop support groups and workshops at Positive Action Aldershot, THT Woking and St Peter s House Redhill, and in the community across Surrey. To provide service user specific advice and direction to the HIV sector around supporting their mental health. To contribute to service development and strategic planning for mental health services within the HIV sector and to support the inclusion of HIV awareness in the development within the mental health sector, ie through IAPT services. To attend relevant mental health meetings eg Stakeholder group. Support Groups Research existing resources and develop as necessary to create appropriate mental health support groups, workshops and workbooks. Set up and facilitate mental health support groups and workshops at Positive Action Aldershot, THT Woking and St Peter s House Redhill, or at other venues in the case of outreach. Prepare the venue for group sessions and maintain a welcoming and appropriate environment conducive to service user and/or peer support. Undertake the necessary administration and practical arrangements, including transport - in accordance with the transport policy guidelines - the preparation of refreshments and the completion of expenses forms. Identify those who may have more complex mental health issues and make the link with appropriate agencies (Community Mental Health Teams, IAPT services etc).

4 Provide education on mental wellbeing and promote mental health awareness thus empowering service users to make informed choices about their life and the help and support they want (using a Person Centred Approach). Support individuals to complete a WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan). Promote social inclusion by accessing community support where appropriate. Work closely with other members of the teams at PA, THT and St Peter s House and give regular feedback. Support Services Act as first point of contact for new referrals to the Emotional Wellbeing Service. Co-ordinate new referrals, registrations and inductions with the Services and Development Manager. Conduct registration procedure with all new referrals and ensure that policy and procedure is followed. Act as first point of referral for registered service users. Assess service user needs using the Recovery Star. Make referrals to support workers and externally for general health and social care support needs. Organise the delivery of mental health support services in response to identified needs. Liaise with affiliated service providers and the service user to ensure needs are met and provide one to one support for service users where appropriate. Utilise and guide student social workers to add value to the delivery of support services. Provide advocacy as appropriate and where available. Encourage and support service users to evaluate and to feedback on services and facilities. To identify and develop new services in conjunction with the Services and Development Manager. Administration Organise and manage service user records, service user list and/or data base as appropriate. Collect anonymised data for monitoring and evaluation purposes. Contact service users to confirm appointments booked. Prepare information for inclusion in the quarterly newsletter. Assist with the production of publicity materials and media. Research resources to meet service users needs, with the support of the Services and Development Manager or MHUDS Manager. Finance Provide payments from petty cash in accordance with PA policy and procedure.

5 Assist with or support applications made for financial assistance on behalf of service users from appropriate hardship funds. Assist the Services and Development Manager with the formulation of the annual operating budget. Assist the Services and Development Manager with monitoring expenditure against budget. Information Be aware of the methods of transmission of HIV and maintain awareness of health and social issues faced by people living with HIV. Receive helpline calls and give appropriate support and information. General Support the Chief Executive when s/he deputises for the Services and Development Manager in her/his absence. Cover for other team members in their absence. In all undertakings ensure compliance with the Confidentiality Policy, Confidentiality Procedures, Equality Policy and Environment Code, and more generally observe the Staff Handbook. Undertake other duties commensurate with the post.

6 PERSON SPECIFICATION This post requires the post-holder ideally possess experience in a similar setting or alternatively be able to demonstrate and give evidence of his/her confidence to deliver service user support services. Essential qualified to a minimum of NVQ Level 4 or equivalent with the focus on mental health at least 2 years work experience, paid or unpaid, in a mental health environment in a similar role, ie a person-centered support services delivery role an awareness of the impact of stigmatisation and prejudice surrounding HIV an empathy for those affected by HIV and mental health issues a sound understanding of equality experience of working with a diverse range of people a sound understanding of confidentiality and ability to comply with confidentiality procedures excellent inter-personal and intra-personal skills excellent organisational skills ability to work on own initiative within a team ability to accept responsibility and be accountable excellent communication skills and telephone manner ability to be administratively self-supporting good time management and ability to prioritise workload accuracy and attention to detail ability to work to schedule and deadlines excellent grammar and diction skills good working knowledge of Microsoft Office products and be computer security aware be reliable, resourceful and energetic willingness to work flexibly to meet the needs of the organisation use of a licensed vehicle, insured for business use valid driving license Desirable an understanding of the health and social implications of living with HIV an understanding of the psychological impact and sequelae of HIV Disease demonstrable skills in interacting appropriately with people living with HIV from a range of cultural backgrounds and of different sexualities experience of delivering a mental health support service experience of developing a mental health support service experience of lone working experience of working in community settings, ie domestic and clinical environments experience of working for a voluntary/not-for-profit organisation psychology or mental health related postgraduate degree
