Agenda What is NSLDS? Using NSLDS to determine eligibility Using NSLDS to assist your students Wrap-up Questions???????

What is NSLDS?

The National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) Tracks the enrollment of all student loan borrowers Contains records of recipients of federal grants and persons who owe an overpayment on a federal grant or federal Perkins loan

What s In NSLDS? Federal student loans Federal Family Educational Loan Program (FFELP) loans Federal Direct loans Perkins loans Federal grants Pell Grants Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG) Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) National Science & Mathematics to Retain Talent Grants (SMART) Enrollment

NSLDS Data Transferred to ISIR upon completion of the FAFSA Received from: Schools Federal loan servicers Other ED programs Central Processing System Pell Grant program

Using NSLDS to Determine Eligibility

Conditions That Affect Title IV Eligibility Transfer students Prior default/overpayment of grant Bankruptcy Prior discharge due to total and permanent disability Aggregate loan limits

NSLDS and the Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR) ISIR information is from NSLDS You may rely on ISIR information and on the information in NSLDS Changes via post-screening After Financial Aid History is received, NSLDS notifies school if significant changes (overpayment or default) occur GEN-96-13, Q&A 54 & 55

NSLDS and the Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR) Student not in the database Comment that student s Social Security number is not in database No relevant history No information will be provided Processing problem C code Student will contact financial aid

Changes After the Initial Match Post-screening Is not required to check for changes If you learn from a source other than NSLDS that the student is ineligible, you must resolve the issue before any delivery or disbursement Will be notified if there are significant changes Default or overpayment New output documents Changes will be noted with a # sign

Transfer Student Monitoring Requires action on your part! Use Transfer Student Monitoring process for transfer students Allows you to receive updated loan history Other conditions have an effect on eligibility

Resolving a Defaulted Loan Repay in full (code DP) Voluntary Involuntary No defense of infancy Consolidate the loans (code DN)

Resolving a Defaulted Loan Make satisfactory repayment arrangements Six consecutive, full, voluntary payments on time (code DX was replaced by XD several years ago) Doesn t include: Federal offset Garnishment Income or asset execution Satisfactory repayment and rehabilitation :HEA Sec. 428F(a) and (b), 464(h)(1) and (2) General Provisions: 34 CFR (a)(2; Perkins: 34 CFR 674.9(j), FFEL: 34 CFR (b), ; DL: 34 CFR (b), (f)
