2 Graduate Level Academic Credit Certificate Program English as a Second Language (ESL) Purdue University Department of English, School of Liberal Arts Rationale The present proposal for a Certificate Program in ESL is based upon the existing Department of English "ESL Endorsement" which has been awarded to graduate students in the Department working toward the MA since 1988 and the Ph.D. since The need for specialists prepared to meet increasing demand both nationally and internationally for ESL instruction, ESL program administration, and research on ESL motivated the establishment of the Endorsement. The pressure has not abated, but continues to grow as the use of English spreads throughout the world in new domains of use - trade and commerce, international relations, science and technology, and interpersonal communication - and for new groups of users - of all ages and across all levels of society. It is anticipated that 10 students per year will participate in the Program and that at least three fourths of them will be concurrently working toward a degree at Purdue University. As the Department of English through its Program in English Language and Linguistics already offers all certificate courses, the Program can begin as soon as it is approved. The following specifications are in addition to those set out in the Graduate School document "Graduate Level, Academic Credit Certificate Programs at Purdue University" (10/14/99). Admission requirements Students currently admitted to a degree program as well as those who are non-degree seeking are eligible to earn a certificate. Students may complete the certificate independently of their field of study. Completion requirements The ESL Certificate is a postbaccalaureate program and requires 15 hours (5 three-credit courses). English 506 Introduction to English Linguistics English 516 Teaching English as a Second Language: Theoretical Foundations English 518 Teaching English as a Second Language: Principles and Practices English 565 Sociolinguistics English 618 Research Design in Language and Linguistics To fulfill the certificate requirements, a minimum GPA of 3.0 must be attained and a minimum grade of "B" earned for any course that is to be applied to the certificate. All courses must be taken for a letter grade.

3 A maximum of 6 credits may be transferred from other institutions to meet the requirements of the certificate if the Director of the ESL Certificate Program, upon consultation with the English Language and Linguistics faculty, approves. Only courses with a grade of B or above and completed within five years prior to the awarding of the certificate will be accepted. Maximum time allowed for completion of the certificate is 5 years. Courses may be applied for credit toward the completion of more than one certificate. Six (6) hours of coursework taken prior to admission to the Certificate Program may be counted toward completion of the Certificate Program. Administration The Director of the ESL Program will serve as director of the Certificate Program and work with the faculty of the English Language and Linguistics Program to oversee the Program, including the process for certifying completion of requirements and notifying the Graduate School. The Office of Graduate Studies secretary will track student progress toward the certificate from application through admission to completion. (This procedure is already in place for the ESL Endorsement.)
