2 Forewords Photonics is recognised as a Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) by the EU, together with nanotechnology, micro- and nanoelectronics, advanced materials and biotechnology. KETs are technologies which are increasingly driving innovations today and in the future (globally) National technology platforms for photonics are networks of public and private players sharing strategic topics in photonics.

11 European organisations 1 The Photonics Unit of the EC s Communications Networks, Content and Technology Directorate General (DG CONNECT) The unit works very closely with the photonics community, mainly through the Photonics21 European Technology Platform. The main reason for which European Technology Platforms have been launched is to better align EU research priorities with industry's needs.

12 European organisations 2 Photonics21 is a voluntary association of industrial enterprises and other stakeholders in the field of photonics in Europe. Presently, Photonics21 has more than 1700 stakeholders EuropeanOpticalSociety is a member of Photonics21

13 European organisations 3 EPIC, the European Photonics Industry Consortium EPIC works with the European Commission to translate industry needs into research and development programmes.

14 EU Commission, Photonics Unit - June 2010 National technology platforms (NTP) for photonics have existed since 2005,.. Such national consortia are networks of public and private players sharing strategic topics in photonics. They (NTP) work together in order to overcome the fragmentation of resources, to define a common strategy and to achieve visibility at political level for the domain

17 The Rochester Regional Photonics Cluster (RRPC) [US] is a not-for-profit organization founded to promote and enhance the New York State photonics, optics and imaging industry by fostering the cooperation of business, academia and government. The European photonics landscape is characterised by the presence of high-level research groups in public research centres and universities and also by strong industries in both SMEs and large companies. Most of these are clustered around so called "regional innovation clusters" and "national technology platforms", which play a catalytic role in the further development of photonics in Europe. (EU Commission, Photonics Unit June 2012) Photonics Cluster (UK) has a strong industry focussed membership with connections into the UK universities and research technological organisations to create the ideal basis for technology transfer across the whole of the UK in Optoelectronics. Photonics Cluster (UK) undertakes an intensive event driven activity programme in addition to technology focussed networking meetings. The Ontario Photonics Industry Network (OPIN) is an industry-led association comprised of professionals, companies and institutions that are interested or engaged in photonics-related activities. OPIN's goal is to share ideas and expertise within and across academic and industry boundaries to strive for mutual success.

30 EPCNet - Project Objectives 1. Identify priority business and market needs through the analysis of cluster actors, end users and available technology platforms/services; 2. Deliver enhanced cooperation and coordination between European photonics clusters and in other priority cross cutting and sectoral cluster/fields; 3. Stimulate and support direct B-to-B exchanges between European photonics clusters and their members in a number of key emerging sectors 4. Utilise business case studies to develop: Innovation effectiveness, access to technology platforms and transfer, in-service training and subsequent dissemination of mechanisms. 5. Develop recommendations and a tool kit for accelerated growth in the uptake of photonics at a European level.
