3 Graduate Diploma of Education (Early Childhood) Duration: 1 year full-time, 2 years part-time (48 credit points). Campus: Peninsula. Intake: First semester. Prerequisites: Recognised degree or equivalent diploma. Course fees (indicative): Commonwealth supported place (2010) $5,310 (8 units); Full-fee place (2010) $15,700 (8 units); International student place (2010) $21,950 (8 units). This course is designed to develop your theoretical and practical knowledge in early childhood teaching. You will gain a broad conceptual understanding of the field of education and actively participate in both on-campus classes and teaching professional placements in a range of early childhood settings. The course comprises eight units, which emphasise the central theories in early childhood teaching and develop a strong understanding of the theories of child development. You ll also learn about the range of early childhood services and the social context of early childhood provision for children aged from birth to 5 years, as well as the need for flexibility and responsiveness to the needs of families and young children. The course addresses the relationship between service provision and the families of young children and also develops an understanding of the ethical requirements of early childhood teachers and the practical application of these requirements. In order to satisfy the conditions of employment established by Early Childhood Australia (Victoria), students who enrol in the program are required to complete up to 55 days of mandatory professional placement experience. Students must be available to undertake their professional placements on a full-time basis (this applies to both full-time and part-time students). Career options: Completion of the course will enable graduates to register with Early Childhood Australia, Victorian Branch, and work in early childhood education and some sectors of child public health. Course outline The course consists of the following eight six-point units: EDF5409 Play and pedagogy EDF5410 Curriculum studies: early childhood EDF5411 Social, political and professional contexts of early childhood teaching EDF5412 Field experience EDF5413 Family studies EDF5414 Child development principles EDF5415 Issues in child development EDF5416 Perspectives of early childhood education Student profile Dinah Humphries Graduate Diploma of Education (Early Childhood) A part-time student, Dinah Humphries completed her Graduate Diploma of Education (Early Childhood) in 2007, and was officially recognised by the faculty as one of the top graduating students the same year. Dinah is now employed as Family and Child Care Project Officer with the Health Wellbeing and Development unit at Monash. Her role includes managing the school holiday program on Clayton campus and playgroups at Clayton and Caulfield, liaising with all the Monash sponsored childcare services, project development and more. It s a credit to the hard work Dinah put into her studies. Balancing study with full-time work was a challenge. The placements were a huge challenge, learning to understand the different expectations of you as a professional in the real world. A placement that I did at the Elwyn Morey Centre (at Monash University, Clayton) was an absolute highlight. The staff were fantastic role models and the chance to utilise my skills and learn from the children was invaluable. I also met a great supportive friend in a fellow student who went on to work as a sessional kinder teacher. We keep in touch and support each other professionally in our new roles. It is important to maintain contacts for personal and professional reasons. I can t imagine ever working outside the area of children s services. I would like to eventually get my Masters or maybe PhD in Early Childhood Education. I found many aspects of the course inspirational and I look forward to further study at Monash University, of course! 1

4 Graduate Diploma of Education (Primary) Duration: 1 year full-time (1.25 years of study completed in 1 calendar year, 60 credit points). Campus: Gippsland, Peninsula. Intake: First semester. Entry requirements: Recognised degree or equivalent diploma. Course fees (indicative): Commonwealth supported place (2010) $6,637 (10 units); Full-fee place (2010) $18,750 (10 units); International student place (2010) $21,875 (10 units). This course is perfect for people with a strong interest in working with primary aged children from 5 to 12 years, and is structured around on-campus classes and teaching professional placements. The Graduate Diploma of Education (Primary) consists of 10 units, which is equivalent to 1.25 years of study, but is completed in one calendar year. The course fee noted above is 1.25 that of a standard one year of study. Your studies will consist of workshops and lectures, with approximately 20 contact hours per week. This more intensive program is necessary to ensure coverage of all learning areas. You will form a broad conceptual understanding of the field of education, and engage as active participants in both classes and teaching practicum placements. For the professional placement program, students will undertake 50 days of placement in a combination of teaching blocks and single days in a range of educational settings. Career options: Following registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT), graduates are eligible to teach primary aged children in Victorian state and independent schools and related teaching services. Graduates wishing to teach interstate or overseas are advised to check registration requirements with local authorities. Course outline The course consists of the following ten units: EDF5110 Professional experience 1 EDF5111 Professional experience 2 EDF5112 Learning and teaching A EDF5113 Learning and teaching B EDF5114 Language and literacy in primary contexts EDF5115 Enabling literacy and numeracy EDF5116 Primary mathematics education EDF5117 Valuing science, innovation and society EDF5118 Health and wellbeing in the primary curriculum EDF5119 Communicating through the arts Student profile Kirstyn Mann Graduate, Graduate Diploma of Education (Primary) Having completed a degree in Human Movement, followed by a Graduate Diploma and Masters in Exercise Rehabilitation Kirstyn was keen to return to further studies after two years in the workforce: I worked in exercise rehab but decided that I wanted to become a primary school teacher as I enjoy working with children and wanted to help children succeed in life she said. Kirstyn s preference for the Graduate Diploma of Education offered at Monash Peninsula was down to the university s well regarded reputation and the relaxed atmosphere of the campus. Her choice was affirmed by a positive rewarding experience: The lecturers in my course were all experienced teachers, and therefore had a lot of relevant information and advice to give us. They were very supportive and made my experience at Monash University a positive one. When asked what aspects of the teaching profession she expects to find the most rewarding, Kirstyn responded that it will be watching the students improve in their learning, and seeing their face light up when they finally understand something they were having trouble with... it is knowing that you are providing a lifelong foundation for students learning, and contributing to them growing up to be active citizens. 2

Eligibility for teaching specialisms usually requires a background of at least two years of tertiary study in the discipline. A double teaching specialism requires at least three years of study in the discipline. These requirements can be checked on the faculty website at monash.edu.au/units. Graduates wishing to teach interstate or overseas are advised to check registration requirements with local authorities. Student profile Victoria Olds Current Student, Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) Formerly a civilian employee of the New Zealand Army, Victoria Olds changed career direction to fulfil a long held goal: Although I enjoyed my job, I knew it was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I had thought about becoming a teacher since leaving school, and finally decided that it was the perfect way to combine my love of learning with my love of history. Victoria, who had previously completed a Bachelor of Arts with Honours, chose to study at Monash after relocating to Melbourne from New Zealand. I knew that Monash was a reputable university, and the one year DipEd course was just what I was looking for. I could qualify to become a teacher quickly, learn all the skills I need, and build on my existing degree. she said. The Faculty of Education at Monash is by far and away the friendliest faculty I have studied in. There is a real sense of community everyone is willing to help, provide advice, and go beyond what is expected of them. The DipEd is a demanding course, so this support is essential. I really am enjoying the course. It has obviously been carefully designed to help prepare students to be the best teachers possible. Victoria notes the highlight of the course as being the professional placement I never thought for a moment that I would enjoy it as much as I did. Although it was the hardest five weeks of my life, it was also the most rewarding. Those five weeks has been of enormous benefit to me both professionally and personally. 3

6 Why study at Monash Three distinct destinations Your university experience should be involving and inspiring. The Faculty of Education is situated across three diverse and stimulating campuses. Clayton Clayton campus is Monash University s largest campus, and it shows in the rich collegiate atmosphere. It s busy at every turn, from the buzz of the cafés to the concentration in the libraries. The Faculty of Education operates a well equipped Teaching/Technology Learning Centre (TLC) which manages a large range of resources, including: group workspace/ study space; media workshop physical materials; access to the Theses collection; access to AV equipment; access to the Teaching Materials collection held in the centre; workshops and training; as well as services such as laminating, binding, printing and more. Additionally, the Matheson library at Clayton also carries an extensive range of education material. You can travel to Clayton campus on a Zone 1 ticket from the city, cycle along the nearby Scotchman s Creek trail, or take advantage of the Monash freeway. There is also a free shuttle bus between Clayton and Peninsula campus fully equipped with free wi-fi for those who like to work on the go. For more information about Clayton campus, visit: edu.au/about/visitors/campuses. html#clayton. Gippsland Gippsland s fertile valleys are home to more than stunning national parks. Monash University s Gippsland campus is situated in the heart of Gippsland, around 140 kilometres east of Melbourne, an idyllic setting perfect for immersing yourself in scholarly commitments. The campus also has on-campus accommodation for those wishing to fully immerse themselves in the Gippsland student lifestyle. The region offers a diverse range of natural attractions including snowfields, beaches, forests and rivers. A strong sense of community and environmental awareness mark Gippsland campus as a spiritually enriching destination. For more information about Gippsland campus, visit: www. education.monash.edu.au/about/ visitors/campuses.html#gippsland. Peninsula With its coastal location, the Peninsula campus puts you in a relaxed frame of mind. The faculty has both a fully equipped sports lab and a state-of-the-art child care centre with observation facilities for learning and research. Peninsula campus is closer than you think, with easy access via Melbourne s freeway and tollway network with the Mornington Peninsula freeway and the new Eastlink tollway. Great cycling amenities make this a perfect alternative and the campus also enjoys excellent public transport links. The free university-run shuttle bus will ferry you to and from the campus as well as between Clayton and Peninsula campuses. The bus is fully wi-fi enabled allowing students to stay connected on the move. Many students choose to live on or nearby the campus to soak up the bayside and Mornington Peninsula attractions. For more information about the campus, visit: monash.edu.au/about/visitors/ campuses.html#peninsula. Off-campus Monash off-campus learning (or distance education ) allows you to further your education with the flexibility you desire. Off-Campus Learning is a flexible mode of study. Most commonly it is based on a combination of print study material and electronic communication. Each unit studied in the Off-Campus Learning mode has the same content and assessment as the equivalent on-campus unit. To undertake this mode of study it is recommended that you have reliable internet access. Students enrolled at Clayton or Gippsland on-campus may undertake most teaching specialisms through off-campus learning. Off-campus students may elect to do their specialisms on-campus at Clayton if they can attend classes. Off campus students in the Graduate Diploma complete their course over two years, undertaking half the full-time load (including teaching practicum) each semester. For the Graduate Diploma, there are compulsory attendance requirements for the practicum placement school experience. Students will be required to complete 1 x 2 week (10 days) block placement in semester one, and 1 x 3 week (15 days) block placement in semester two; in total, students will complete 50 days of placement over the two year part-time course. For more information on off-campus study check about.html.
