2 INTRODUCTION The department of Electrical engineering is the biggest department at TUT. There was a need to create a coordinated process to manage Postgraduate activities in the department The Post Graduate (PG) activities in the Department of Electrical Engineering currently operate within the Post Graduate School in Electrical & Electronic Engineering (PGSEE). The PGEEE was created to form a virtual environment bringing together various collaborators involved in PG activities and relevant approved Niche Areas. 2

3 In the current framework, the PGEEE comprises of the following: Department of Electrical Engineering (DEE) French South African Institute of Technology (F SATI) PGEEE Technology Station in Electronics (TSE) Centre for Energy & Electric Power (CEEP) External Entities (Industry, CSIR, International Universities) 3

4 CURRENT PROGRAMME OFFERINGS: ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING National Diploma: 2 years + 1 year P1/P2. BTech: 1-1½ year, 7 subjects + Industrial project. MTech: 1 ½ year Research/Structured programme. DTech: 3 year Research programme 4

5 POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES M TECH THROUGH RESEARCH This programme requires the completion of a full dissertationbased research project. The programme can be completed within two years on a fulltime basis or within four years on a part-time basis. The research projects may be undertaken in industry-specified projects or projects in defined niche areas (Telecommunications, Enabled Environment, Energy & Industrial Power Systems). 5

6 STRUCTURED M TECH (COURSEWORK-BASED) This programme consists of a part coursework and minidissertation based programme. The programme can be completed within two years on a full-time basis or within four years on a part-time basis. The programme can be currently done in one of three possible specialisations: Telecommunications, Control and Power. In 2016, the new specialisation in Energy Efficiency will be introduced. 6

7 INTERNATIONAL FRENCH MSc Programme The International French MSc programme is a joint Master s programme leading to the conferring of a TUT M Tech in Electrical Engineering and ESIEE MSc. The programme requires the completion of a full dissertation (M Tech) managed according to TUT requirements and the completion of nine MSc courses, each carrying 7.5 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). The programme may be completed in one of three possible specialisations at TUT: Telecommunications, Control, Power 7

11 EVOLUTION OF PROGRAMME OFFERINGS Following the approval of Category A applications by the CHE, the Department of Electrical Engineering has requested the approval of change of name and the qualification of the MTech: Electrical Engineering to a Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering at NQF level 9. 11

12 EVOLUTION OF PROGRAMME OFFERINGS The evolution of the requirements of the French MSc would still require the completion of 60 ECTS credits at the BEng Hons (L8) + Master s level (L9) and 30 ECTS credits through a research project. Students would be obliged to complete the MEng (Research) to fulfil the research project component. 12

Introduction to Measurement and Verification 14

15 ENGINEERING ANALYSIS V Signal spaces, mappings, deterministic signal theory, stochastic signal theory. ENERGY SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGY V Modelling of alternative energy sources and corresponding technological options. CONVERSION SYSTEMS V Converter theory, electromechanical systems, electric materials, EM field calculation, distribution (non-linear and transient problems, numerical methods, applications), transmission, planning and design. 15

16 ENERGY ECONOMICS & POLICY V Interactions and interrelationship between energy, economic and environmental systems in relation to the challenges of risks reduction from climate change, primarily through the use of mitigation, general principles of regulation and engineering economics computational analysis. CONTROL SYSTEMS V System modelling, discrete-time analysis and digital controller design. SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING V Scientific computing fundamentals, simulation, C++, Matlab, Simulink and Scilab. 16
