IDENTIFICATION Position No. Job Title Supervisor s Position Pre-Nursing Instructor, Nursing & Health Science Programs Program Manager, Nursing and Health Sciences Programs, Department Division/Region Community Location NAC Nunatta Campus Iqaluit 235 Freebalance Coding: PURPOSE Main reason why the position exists, within what context and what the overall end result is. Under the direction of the Manager of Nursing and Health Sciences Programs, the incumbent will be responsible for the instruction of courses in the Pre Nursing program, and other programs in the Nursing and Health Science Programs of Nunavut Arctic College, or in other divisions. 3. SCOPE Describe the impact the position has on the area in which it works, or if it impacts other departments, the government as a whole, or the public directly or indirectly. How does the position impact those groups/individuals, the organization and/or budgets? What is the magnitude of that impact? Purpose of the Programs The Pre Nursing program provides access to the Baccalaureate Nursing Degree or the Practical Nursing Diploma programs. The program is designed to provide access to those who do not meet the regular university or program entrance requirements. Students in the Pre Nursing program will be considered students of the Nursing Program. In response to a health care system based on the principles of primary health care, the Bachelor of Science in Arctic Nursing Program, delivered by Nunavut Arctic College in partnership with a Canadian University School of Nursing, will prepare Nunavummiut to become Registered Nurses and write the Canadian Registered Nurse Exam. Graduates will be prepared to work in partnerships with individuals, families, groups and communities to provide culturally relevant primary health care to the people of Nunavut. Graduates will also be prepared to promote, maintain and strengthen health, as well as to provide competent care to persons experiencing illness. The Diploma in Practical Nursing will prepare graduates to write the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination (not offered currently). Other Health Science programs may be offered when requested by the Department of Health and the Pre Nursing will provide a solid academic foundation, when needed Page 1 Revised: June 23, 2015
2 Outcomes The Pre Nursing program prepares successful students with a solid academic basis for a future career in nursing as Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse and other Health Science programs such as but not limited to, Maternity Care Worker Certificate, Midwifery Diploma in Nunavut. Summary of Programs The Pre Nursing program is 10 months in length, delivered over 3 semesters. The program provides a solid academic foundation and prepares successful students for a future education in nursing as Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse. Upon completion of the program, the students will strengthen their Inuit cultural and language heritage, apply IQ principles in the focus of their career, enter the BScN and diploma in Practical Nursing programs academically prepared, practice effectively as a Health Team Worker in Nunavut Health Care System and participate in Lifelong Learning. The Bachelor of Science in Arctic Nursing is a four year program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Arctic Nursing, with a focus on nursing in the Arctic. The degree is awarded by a Canadian University. Presently the degree is awarded by the senate of Dalhousie University. The curriculum is designed to enable graduates to meet the standards of nursing practice in Canada and be eligible for registration/licensing in Nunavut. The Diploma in the Practical Nursing Program is a two year program leading to licensing as a Licensed Practical Nurse in Nunavut. The Diploma is awarded by Nunavut Arctic College. Other Health Science Programs such as Maternity Care Worker, Midwifery Diploma, but not limited to, may be offered when requested by the Department of Health. 4. RESPONSIBILITIES Describe major responsibilities and target accomplishments expected of the position. List the responsibilities that have the greatest impact on the organization first and describe them in a way that answers why the duties of the position are being performed. For a supervisory or management position, indicate the subordinate position(s) through which objectives are accomplished. Develops and delivers classroom instruction and ensures that student needs and college program criteria are met by: Preparing lesson plans, objectives and outlines Delivering lessons using a variety of instructional strategies Recommending and participating in new curriculum and curriculum revisions Identifying additional learning tasks/objectives Searching, reviewing, and recommending resource materials to implement or enhance the program or courses Preparing hand-outs that are developed at the students reading level Assuring that training materials are consistent with latest and most current theories and knowledge Providing opportunities for student evaluation of course content and instructional quality Maintaining a record of all course outlines and materials used in course/program delivery Working closely with guest lecturers or contractors to help prepare them for delivery of the course Developing and administering materials for student evaluation Monitoring and advising students in the program Ensuring instruction meets the professional standards of the College, and entrance requirements of the Canadian University partner. Helping individuals to recognise and understand personal needs, values, problems, alternatives and goals Assessing students performance skills before and after teaching Maintaining all course correspondence, attendance, progress reports and course marks Referring students to counselling services for help with personal or financial problems, or for extra Page 2 Revised: June 23, 2015
3 guidance regarding time management study skills Making recommendations to Nursing and Health Sciences Manager regarding improvements and ongoing development and enhancement of the program Fulfilling supplementary duties related to overall program delivery (i.e.) student admission interviews as assigned by the Nursing and Health Sciences Manager Maintaining inventory of classroom hardware and software Participates in learning/training for programming and maintaining health simulators when required Ensuring equipment is in working order by doing minor or preventative maintenance and submitting work orders for repair Maintaining security and safety of the assigned instructional area Recruitment of potential students Travelling to other communities for course delivery and related purposes when required Delivering courses outside the (traditional) 8:30 to 17:00 time period when necessary. Maintains and upgrades professional knowledge and skills by: Attending professional conferences, workshops, and seminars Keeping current with professional literature Collaborating with other instructors, especially those in the Nunavut Nursing and Health Science Programs Participating in online courses. Addressing Student needs: Encouraging student assessments of their own progress Develop and maintain goal centred progress plans for students when required. Assisting students with recognising and understanding personal needs, values, problems, alternatives and goals. Developing and participating in course outcomes. Providing dedicated office hours to give assistance to students outside the formal classroom (i.e. tutoring assistance with all papers/essays, projects, assisting prior to examinations if needed). Referring students to counselling or tutoring services for help in addition if required (i.e. personal issues, scholarly writing, and time management skills). Maintaining security and safety of the assigned instructional area. 5. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Describe the level of knowledge, experience and abilities that are required for satisfactory job performance. Knowledge identifies the acquired information or concepts that relate to a specific discipline. Skills describe acquired measurable behaviours and may cover manual aspects required to do a job. Abilities describe natural talents or developed proficiencies required to do the job. These requirements are in reference to the job, not the incumbent performing the job. Incumbent must be Qualified High School teacher. A Master s Degree is preferred with credits in (Maths, Chemistry, Biology) Science. The incumbent will have experience in working and teaching in cross-cultural situations and specific knowledge of adult instructional skills. 4 6. WORKING CONDITIONS List the unavoidable, externally imposed conditions under which the work must be performed and which create hardship for the incumbent. Express frequency, duration and intensity of each occurrence in measurable time (e.g. every day, two or three times a week, 5 hours a day). The incumbent will work in the facilities of Nunatta Campus. Classroom instruction may cause fatigue for some people. Environmental Conditions Indicate the nature of adverse environmental conditions to which the jobholder is exposed, and the frequency and duration of exposures. Include conditions that increase the risk of accident, ill health, or physical discomfort. Exposure to chemicals may occur during course delivery and laboratory experiences. Preparation of teaching materials and teaching require the use of computer and exposure to the terminal. Exposure to chemicals, etc. while teaching labs. 5 The incumbent must respond to the demands of classroom and laboratory instruction. Mental Demands Indicate conditions within the job that may lead to mental or emotional fatigue that would increase the risk of such things as tension or anxiety. The nature of course material will require extra classes and tutoring. Decisions that result in student failure or withdrawal from the program can be stressful. High levels of stress may be encountered in attempting to manage time efficiently among instructing, tutoring and counselling of students.
