2 Methodology INSTRUMENT An online survey was conducted between May 10 th and May 13 th, SCOPE The survey was completed with 1,504 Canadian adults (aged 18+).

3 Three Fifths Believe Canadian Aid Should Fund Safe Access to Abortions in Developing Countries More than three-fifths of Canadians say they disagree with the notion that Canadian aid should not go to funding safe access to abortions for women in developing countries. Almost two-fifths (37%) saying they strongly disagree with this statement. Only one-third (34%) agree with this statement, with 18% agreeing strongly. 4 Albertans Are More Likely To Agree that Aid Should Not be Funding Abortions Regionally, slightly more than half (53%) of the residents of Alberta believe that Canadians Aid should NOT go to funding safe access to abortion in developing countries. This is significantly higher than any other region in Canada. Conversely, residents of Quebec (71%) and BC (68%) are more likely to feel that Canadian aid should fund safe access to abortion. 5 One-Quarter of Canadians Believe Military Support Should Go to Haiti There is not strong support for Canadian military aid to go to any one country once Canada withdraws it troops from Afghanistan. In fact, more than half of Canadians say the military should go nowhere (32%) or they do not know where it should go (22%). The country that receives the most support from Canadians is Haiti, with one-quarter feeling this is where Canada s military should go. All other tested countries are offered by few. Canada has announced its intention to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan next year. In what region should Canada next focus its military support?

6 Support for Military Aid in Haiti is Highest Among Quebecers Residents of Quebec are more likely than other regions to believe that Canada's military should be supporting Haiti. One-in-ten residents from Alberta believe military support should go to Congo. Ontarians and those from BC are the most likely to feel that Canada s military should not go anywhere. Canada has announced its intention to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan next year. In what region should Canada next focus its military support?

7 Canadians Want Access to Expense Accounts of Members of Parliament and Senators Almost nine-in-ten Canadians believe the expense account books of members of Parliament and Senators should be open to public access. This is particularly true of Canadians 35 years of age or older (93% vs. 78% of those 18 to 34). Younger Canadians are more likely than older Canadians to say parliamentarians should be left to audit their own books (11% vs. 4%). Currently the detailed expense accounts of members of Parliament and senators are not subject to public access to information laws and are blocked from review by the auditor general. 8 Desire for Open Books Particularly High in Maritimes, Quebec and BC Overall, Canadians from across the country believe that these expense accounts should be opened. However, this sentiment is particularly high in BC (94%), Quebec (93%) and the Maritimes (93%). While still a minority, residents from Alberta (10%) and Ontario (8%) are more likely than those from other regions to feel that parliamentarians should be left to audit their own expenses.
