The legendary arts scene from the 1920s has reemerged since the re-opening of the city after the fall of the Wall in The most significant revival is taking place in the neue Mitte, the former city center of East. The city provides vast opportunities for artists, art historians, and art theorists alike. With an abundance of world-renowned collections, the most prominent of which are in the museums of the Staatliche Museen Preussischer Kulturbesitz (SMPK), the city displays art and artifacts from the earliest to the most recent periods of European and non-european cultures. is home to 200 galleries, numerous media institutions, and art institutions, such as Universität der Künste, one of the most prominent academies of fine arts in Germany. Replete with film archives, museums, companies and art cinemas, /Potsdam is a vibrant center of European filmmaking. The ale, the International Film Festival, is held each February and attracts some of the most exciting films produced worldwide. The Stanford-in- program in collaboration with the Art and Communication Departments aims to provide possibilities for students to study art, media, and film and to participate in internships in various creative fields throughout Germany. Internship hosts include not only s museum collections, art schools and research institutions but many commercial software and multimedia producers, the movie industry, and pioneering clubs and galleries in media art. Stanfordin- has a well-equipped multi-media lab and is hoping to expand facilities and software for video, photography and digital art. In addition, special excursions to places such as the Bauhaus museums in Dessau and Weimar are offered depending on quarterly course offerings. boasts three opera houses and many theatres, which sell student tickets at low prices. The Stanfordin- program covers the cost of entrance to all museums, galleries, theaters, operas and concerts, if and when the excursions are integral to coursework. In addition, the Bing Cultural Enrichment subsidies (provided by a grant from Dr. Peter and Mrs. Helen Bing) sponsor group concerts and opera visits; the program offers subsidies of theater, opera, classical music, concerts, museums, and German films. In cooperation with opera and theater experts, the program also provides introductory discussions on performances attended as a group. Students who come to in the winter quarter can take advantage of attending the ale, the International Film Festival. The program invites specialists to provide students with an orientation of this annual, world-class festival. Students enrolled in the winter quarter film course attend the ale free of charge.

Access to studio space (provided for majors either at the Stanford-in- facilities or at one of the art schools); interested students should inquire prior to arrival in. Access to digital photography and video technology. A grand piano and two guitars; rental of other musical instruments is subsidized by the Bing Cultural Enrichment Grant. INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES in Art, Performing Arts and Media The Krupp Internship Program arranges 3 6 month, fully paid, fulltime internships with leading companies and institutions for students of any major/minor who have participated for at least one quarter in the Stanford-in- Program and have completed the equivalent of 1 year of college-level German. Internships can be arranged in a variety of art fields and with institutions or individual artists from all over Germany. Film- und Fernsehproduktion, in Leipzig (movie production): Literaturforum im Brecht-Haus, (discussions and events on art, culture, history, literature, politics theatre etc.): Master class in painting with Hans Jürgen Diehl (Universität der Künste) Museum Folkwang Essen, Photographische Sammlung, Essen: Pergamonmuseum, Antikensammlung, (art history): Pixelpark AG (management and technology service company): Sender Freies TV Network: Studio Babelsberg GmbH (and related companies), Potsdam Babelsberg: Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie, Karlsruhe (ZKM: probably Germany s most advanced multimedia research and exhibition institution): Note: Students who wish to intern in studio art or design (animation, graphic design, web programming, product design, etc.) are usually required to attach a portfolio or other examples of their creative work as part of their internship application. We also recommend that they have a personal web page where their work may be displayed.
