That follows a 15 percent sales gain in 2013 that pushed annual volume past 2 million for the first time, to 2,113,173 vehicles. Through August, the industry sold 1,556,245 certified used cars and light trucks, with a wide range of brands posting double-digit gains. Certified used-vehicle sales for Nissan Division, for instance, rose 19 percent in the first eight months of 2014 to 92,777, while certified used-vehicle sales at its luxury sibling Infiniti surged 78 percent to 13,662. Derrick Hatami, vice president of U.S. sales for Nissan North America, attributed Nissan Division s sales gains to several factors, including its 7-year/100,000-mile and special finance rates from its captive finance company. He noted that about 80 percent of the brand s are fully engaged in the. Hatami said about one-third of online consumer interaction and lead volume for new and certified used vehicles stems from mobile devices. So Nissan Division will introduce a mobile website for certified used vehicles this month. Larry Pryg, national manager of GM Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles, predicted that his company s certified used sales will grow at least 10 percent this year. GM Certified includes the sales of certified Buick, Chevrolet and GMC vehicles. Cadillac has a separate. He cited several factors for GM Certified s sales increases, including a that enables salespeople to explain the value of a certified used vehicle to consumers by putting a price tag on individual features. Using a one-page checklist, GM hip salespeople point out the cost of items such as the vehicle s 12- month/12,000-mile limited new-vehicle extension, 2-year/24,000-mile maintenance plan and trial offers of SiriusXM satellite radio and OnStar, a vehicle telematics system. I N T R O D U C T I O N Certified sales set sights on record Certified used-vehicle sales for Chrysler Group rose 17 percent through August to 96,686. Chrysler Group certified sales include Chrysler Division, Dodge, Ram, Fiat and Jeep. Eric Swanson, head of Chrysler s certified used-vehicle sales, said enhancements made last year are bearing fruit. Chrysler simplified its certified used-vehicle to a single 7-year/100,000 mile powertrain that starts from the time the vehicle was sold as new and a 3- month/3,000 mile bumper-to-bumper. Previously, there were multiple warranties for certified used vehicles depending on vehicle model years. But the most significant step, Swanson said, was expanding and bringing in-house its field team that calls on. The team had been made up of contract employees. Their job is solely to talk about certified pre-owned and expand participation and, as you can see from the results, expand our certified pre-owned sales, Swanson said. American Honda Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. stood out among major brands in posting lower certified used-vehicle sales so far this year. The declines were in part because of reduced inventory of certifiable vehicles due to the drop in sales at both companies after the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Toyota brand s certified used-vehicle sales through August slipped 6 percent to 239,251 and Lexus brand s rose 2 percent, leaving Toyota Motor Sales certified total off 5 percent at 289,282. Meanwhile, Honda brand s certified used-vehicle sales through August dropped 8 percent to 158,487 and Acura brand s dipped 2 percent to 27,761. Brian Butts, American Honda s manager of automobile remarketing, said one reason for the certified used-vehicle sales slide was that some had been temporarily suspended from the this year for failing to adhere to certification guidelines. He said American Honda is restructuring the certified s for both its brands and expects to introduce improved s this year. He would not say how many were suspended this year or give specifics of the improved s. Butts said stricter compliance guidelines were adopted for Acura in May 2012 and for Honda in September We want to make the best certified used-vehicle in the industry, Butts said. Certified pre-owned vehicle A previously owned vehicle sold with the original manufacturer s certification that the vehicle is in optimal condition. The manufacturers select vehicles based on age, mileage and a multiple-point inspection process. Age, mileage and inspection criteria vary by manufacturer. Point inspection A comprehensive vehicle inspection to ensure that the vehicle is in excellent working order. The point inspection is a list of the parts of the vehicle that are examined. Each manufacturer has its own inspection list, but most are similar. All inspections are performed under strict manufacturer guidelines. Most certified pre-owned s transfer and extend the existing new-car terms or add terms and mileage. Warranty coverage varies by manufacturer. GLOSSARY OF CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED VEHICLE TERMS Warranty deductible The amount the owner is responsible for when repair work is performed under CPO. Many manufacturers do not require a deductible.
