Using Hybrid Clouds for Strategic Agility, Protection and Scalability 2 Overview: Why the Hybrid Cloud is Different and Why that Difference Matters Many executives and IT professionals think of a hybrid cloud as simply two separate clouds (a private cloud and a public cloud) managed by one organization. Indeed, the NIST definition of a hybrid cloud (two distinct clouds that support some aspect of app migration between them) does leave plenty of room for interpretation. The problem for business executives is that a vague sense of a hybrid cloud can easily translate into an equally vague business case, especially for traditional multitier apps that have not been virtualized. CloudVelocity is Figure 1 The Hybrid Cloud advocating a more specific definition of a hybrid cloud (as two or more separate clouds managed seamlessly as a single operating environment) with a transformational business case in mind. That business case includes: new approaches to disaster recovery; developer labs extended into the clouds; and automated cloud migration for fast and low cost tion) to be integrated between the data center and the cloud. With CloudVelocity software, cloud migration can be completed in a fraction of the time required by existing cloud migration tools that requiring extensive manual processes and heightened operating risks, and/or require lock-in to a virtualization vendor s platform. The net result is heightened agility, orchestration into and between clouds. The CloudVelocity solution is different from other approaches because it supports physical and virtual multi-tier apps, requires no app modification and allows data center services (including LDAP, Active Directory and authenticaefficiency, protection and scalability, especially for traditional multi-tier apps. Developing a Hybrid Cloud Vision Forward thinking IT organizations are well on their way to developing a private cloud architecture one in which service instances are carved from resource pools based on the needs of the organization. At the same time, some of these same organizations are at least dipping a toe in the public cloud by testing out services such as those offered by Amazon, Rackspace or Microsoft s Azure. A recent InformationWeek survey found that roughly half of IT organizations in the US had a private cloud strategy, while public cloud services were used by 27% IT organizations. The percentage of those looking to develop a private cloud strategy has increased steadily over the past two years, while the growth of those looking to use IaaS offerings has slowed. At least in part, IaaS use is
Using Hybrid Clouds for Strategic Agility, Protection and Scalability 3 settling in at just under 30% because the IaaS providers have a different view of how their services should be used than do enterprise architects. Public cloud pioneers envision a day when IT organizations give up their own IT operations and use only public offerings. IT architects, on the other hand prefer the notion of a hybrid architecture, where applications can easily move between the company s own data centers and the public cloud. Of those with a private cloud strategy, about half also had a public cloud strategy, and 75% of those respondents envisioned creating a hybrid cloud. Hybrid clouds promise the agility, protection and scalability of public clouds as needed, with enterprise-grade orchestration and control. Hybrid cloud is a natural evolution of server virtualization, with strategic payoffs including temporary use of external facilities with internal-grade controls. It decouples enterprises from being dependent upon a single vendor s virtualization platform and also allows them to operate across multiple cloud zones and environments, versus being isolated in a single public and/or private cloud environment. While a hybrid cloud can address all of the challenges discussed here, most organizations view the model as too immature and complex for production use. Few decision makers truly understand the requirements of hybrid cloud operating models as a multitude of vendors have invested in blurring the path to true hybrid cloud operation. Further, because of differences in environments, creating a hybrid cloud now is just as hard as creating a private cloud used to be. Orchestration and management software is generally not yet up to the task of building and managing complex hybrid clouds. IT organizations must spend precious intellectual capital to manage Figure 2 Comparing Virtualization Technology the nascent technology. Disruptive Technologies Numerous technologies have been developed to address the costs associated with disaster recovery, test and development, and peak load handling each with its own limitations. None are truly up to the task. Taken together with private cloud technology, the capabilities of these tools point to how infrastructure as a service offerings such as Amazon s AWS can provide a good environment for meeting short term needs including all of those mentioned here. In concept, IaaS is alluringly simple. Just package applications and their operating environments into virtual containers, move data into the cloud and use, and pay for, only the resources you need for as long as you need. It s elegant in concept, but in practice there are several challenges. First, IaaS platforms typically use a form of virtualization that generally won t be familiar to enterprise IT pros. Where most enterprise IT teams use either VMware or Microsoft s Hyper-V, public IaaS systems like those from Amazon or Rackspace use a form of open source for
Using Hybrid Clouds for Strategic Agility, Protection and Scalability 4 their offerings. An even bigger challenge for cloud professionals: the compute, storage, networking, and security models are all different in public cloud environments. That taken together with the need to learn the AWS system presents a new learning curve for IT teams, as public clouds typically require new skills to fully leverage the promoted benefits. IT teams may also have to rework their application architecture so that highly sensitive data never leaves the company data center, while application and web front ends run in the cloud and access required data through secure tunnels. Developing this architecture can lead to a unique system suited just for the IaaS cloud provider s environment and that offers enterprise security pros increased control over the public cloud environment. The learning curve and the potential need for re-architecting of applications essentially locks the IT team into using a single vendor s systems. A set of unrelated products has been developed to help with the use of IaaS offerings, and with replicating data for disaster recovery or test and dev environments. So called Physical-to- Virtual (P2V) and Virtual-to-Virtual (V2V) tools can be used to help convert existing data center applications whether virtualized or not to run in the cloud. Generally these tools do not modify the application itself, but instead determine all of the dependencies and needs of the application within the operating environment. The tool then modifies that environment so that system drivers and configurations are made compatible with intended virtualization environment. These tools can greatly simplify the job of creating virtual images but they don t typically address architectural issues, nor are they capable of mapping out a complex application s dependencies. In a typical three tier application, each individual component of the app must be handled by itself, and then it s left to the IT team to get the components running the public cloud and knit them back into a functioning clone of the original service. These tools tend to work best on simple applications, with extensive manual processing required for more complex apps. But it is these more complex applications that IT will want to run in a hybrid cloud. Further, the tools create point-in-time versions of the operating environment, so if the app or its operating system change, the tools must be used again to capture the changes, and new virtual machine images must be redeployed. Since these tools are restricted to small apps with very basic services requirements, they often also involve significant manual processes, including scripts, for successful deployment, with limited data center integration. Effec- Figure 3 App and Service Requirements for Hybrid Cloud Operation
Using Hybrid Clouds for Strategic Agility, Protection and Scalability 5 tive control requires extensive and often prohibitive levels of effort and therefore risk. Repetitive manual processes are error-prone and labor intensive. What IT needs is the ability to clone key parts of the private cloud environment. There is yet another issue with these tools. Data in the cloud needs to reside in encrypted volumes. These P2V and V2V tools don t typically address that critical requirement, or other networking and security requirements required by common operating models. Figure 4 OHC Blueprint Screenshot Screenshot of a graphical representation of an app. The map differentiates between Internet facing servers and internal services and well as application layer systems and those with special needs such as database servers. Database servers will require extra steps, which CloudVelocity performs, to insure consistency during the replication process. You Want It Back When? BBefore a cloud offering can be used as a replica of a production environment, production data must be moved to the cloud. A problem that plagues disaster recovery systems is the ability to meet recovery time objectives (RTO) and recovery point objectives (RPO). RTO is the time it ll take to bring up a second system when disaster takes down the primary system. For most applications, RTOs are measured in hours or even days, depending on whether recovery sites are warm (systems are always up and running) or cold. RPO indicates how much time or how many transactions can be lost if a disaster hits. For systems that deal with financial transactions, RPOs can be extremely small, and may require specialized high availability systems. For most applications, RPOs can range from a few seconds to a few hours or even days depending on how frequently data is replicated to the remote site. Traditional backup systems typically offer an RPO of about a day, since incremental backups are done daily. For both RPO and RTO, the cost of data replication solutions goes up as the recovery objectives go down. RTO and RPO are developed with line of business partners, and with a close eye on the budget. One technology which has greatly reduced the cost of lowering the RPO is continuous data protection. CDP systems use agents to watch for data file changes, and then replicate those changes to another system either within the data center or to another data center. Deploying these systems reduces the RPO from about a day, which might be typical with tape backup systems, to minutes or seconds. CDP systems typically work asynchronously and without application awareness. This simplifies deployment, and insures that applications aren t slowed down because of synchronous replication to a distributed system. While CDP lowers RPOs, it doesn t specifically address RTO. In disasters, systems still must be brought online and backed up data must be restored from the backup format to the production file sys-
Using Hybrid Clouds for Strategic Agility, Protection and Scalability 6 tem format that the application expects. As the name implies, CDP applies only to data. It generally does not track system changes, so they must be handled separately. CloudVelocity s Approach to Agility and Continuous Application Protection Figure 5 CloudVelocity Encryption and Security Services Nexus servers communicate with OHC cloud resource managers to provision services and security within the chosen cloud environment. Figure 6 OHC Protected Application Administration Stream Once protected by OHC, applications can be replicated for any purpose. All of the technologies mentioned so far, IaaS, P2V, V2V and CDP have all been disruptive in their own right. Yet they don t meet many of the critical needs of key IT and developer teams. They ve given IT architects new cost effective ways of dealing with problems that have challenged IT for decades, but as we ve seen, each comes with its own limitations. Much in the same way that Apple s iphone improved upon and combined existing technologies to redefine the smartphone, Cloud- Velocity combines and improves upon IaaS, P2P, V2V and CDP to create the first truly hybrid cloud operating environment for existing, multi-tier apps and services, without requiring server virtualization and virtualization platform lock-in. It also provides a single, unified platform of pre-production and production environments. The CloudVelocity solution meets critical requirements because it analyzes the application systems and dependencies and blueprints the systems running the application in the data center. It then provisions required storage resources in your chosen IaaS platform and synchronizes these systems directly into the cloud storage resources, and continually updates them with any changes made to the systems running the application. This includes the full application stack and data, operating system files, configuration, kernel and patches and updates, and closedbox file servers, as well. The solution ensures that all of the information necessary to launch up-to-date copies of the application in the cloud are kept ready without the expense of maintaining running cloud virtual machines for each
Using Hybrid Clouds for Strategic Agility, Protection and Scalability 7 system required by the application. With a single mouse click, Cloud- Velocity creates virtual machine images, provisions the required processing, networking and storage resources in the cloud IaaS platform, launches a copy of the application systems in the cloud and extends data center services to them. This enables a strategic level of agility, protection and scale, something this is typically costprohibitive with server virtualization alone. By automating each step in the process of creating a cloud instance of apps, CloudVelocity lets IT Pros easily replicate and extend data center applications and services into IaaS clouds, enabling multitier applications to run as is while still being able to access services running in the data center. This is essentially the hybrid cloud operating model that delivers new levels of IT operating synergy. How It Works To create instances in the cloud, customers deploy the Cloud- Velocity (One Hybrid Cloud ) virtual appliance in their data center. Using credentials you supply, the OHC appliance connects to servers you select to discover application hosts and determine application dependencies. The system then creates a blueprint of the existing installation including server side requirements, network and storage needs, and operating system configurations. This will be used to provision the required cloud resources and create cloud runnable systems on demand. After creating the blueprints of the systems and the application, CloudVelocity launches a service on the local systems to synchronize and continually update their state to the cloud. For the Cloud Continuity capability, systems that may invoke third-party or specialized software to be replicated consistently such as databases are noted in the blueprinting processes. During the synchronization process, the required software will be automatically invoked to generate and synchronize these parts of the system. This process essentially creates a clone of the private cloud components that make up the app. Cloud cloning takes away the repetitive tasks of moving from one cloud environment to another, and also allows IT pros to spin up copies of complex application environments at will. This ability is unique to the CloudVelocity system and provides IT with the agility to easily move between public cloud systems and to easily start and destroy instances of the application for testing and development. By default, CloudVelocity software will replicate all required systems into the cloud. Using the OHC administration tool, IT architects can modify the list of replicated directories and services. If desired, highly sensitive data stores can be excluded from the cloud, from individual files or directory trees up to whole systems. When systems are excluded, OHC will create secure connections from the cloud provider back to the customer data center so that applications can run as usual. Once the administrator is satisfied with the blueprint, the cloud cloning process begins. Public cloud storage resources are provisioned to meet the needs of the application systems to be replicated, and the systems are synchronized in parallel directly to images in cloud storage. This alleviates the need for running virtual machine instances during the synchronization process (they re only created when the application needs to run in the cloud), greatly reducing potential IaaS costs to just cloud storage costs. Synchronization data is sent over an encrypted channel, as shown in figure 5, ensuring that data is kept private and secure. The synchronization copies each systems configuration, metainformation, and file systems to the cloud, and then continually updates the cloud information with any changes that happen on the local systems. This involves an initial synchronization for all required parts of the systems application stacks and data, operating system libraries, binaries and even the operating system kernel. Any changes made on the systems, whether to executables, data, home directories, or any other part of the system, are automatically synchronized to the cloud. This includes patch installations, security updates, file system mounts,
Using Hybrid Clouds for Strategic Agility, Protection and Scalability 8 or other configuration information. CloudVelocity also automatically detects NFS servers in use, and synchronizes necessary data on them to cloud storage. CloudVelocity automatically detects and synchronizes just the changes, improving efficiency and lowering overhead. The remote images are typically kept up to date within seconds of changes to systems in the data center. At this point, one or more simultaneous copies of the application can be started in the cloud site, with a single mouse click. A lot happens behind the scenes on the cloud IaaS platform: CloudVelocity dynamically provisions the required processing, networking and storage resources in the cloud IaaS platform. It then customizes copies of the synchronized system images, creates virtual machine images for each system, and launches them in the cloud. Files servers are dynamically generated and populated with the synchronized data and attached to the application systems. The systems are started in the order of the dependencies detected during the host discovery process. Any data-center services that IT mandates be kept local, but which are required by the application to run are automatically connected via a secure tunnel to the data center. A key capability permits multiple clones to be created at the same time, and run in isolation from one another in secure network environments. Since cloning is completely automated, the process is completed quickly and the systems can be up and running in minutes. A key element is replicating from secure environments to secure environments. CloudVelocity creates a secure environment through the services shown in figure 5, encrypting both data in motion and at rest. Once running in a hybrid cloud environment, applications can be cloned for testing and other purposes. The OHC administration tool provides a graphical view of the instances running as shown in figure 6. Summing It Up By simplifying and automating the normally complex and errorprone process of virtualizing applications to run in the public cloud, CloudVelocity gives IT pros the control and agility they need to manage critical applications in a robust, yet cost effective way. By handling the minutia of creating a compatible cloud image, IT pros also are relieved of the learning curve associated with each public cloud system. That provides them with an easy integration capability between private and public cloud systems as well as traditional data centers. CloudVelocity allows IT to use cloud on demand and as needed, for strategic agility, protection and scalability at a fraction of the cost of server virtualization, and for apps that are not virtualized.
