Underpinning principles The most powerful agents of change are people themselves, everyone has something to give Our citizens, our communities, are our greatest assets, everyone has potential to make change Change through collective action is most powerful and engagement in community life leads to more positive personal outcomes But, in terms of addressing health inequalities, direct intervention is required in communities experiencing long term disadvantage

Community-led Health An approach to health improvement that aims to support communities experiencing disadvantage and poor health outcomes to: identify and define what is important to them about their health identify the factors that impact on wellbeing take the lead in identifying and implementing solutions.

In practice this means Addressing needs, assets, priorities and agenda for change led by community and agreed with others Working with people as community members not as individual members of the public Focusing on disadvantage, exclusion and inequality Promoting an empowerment approach to change Promoting agency-community partnership Promoting social model of health especially the interaction with the medical model

Benefits & Advantages Food availability & affordability Mental health improvement & wellbeing Learning & employability Social Networks & support Building relationships between communities and service providers

Benefits & Advantages Catalyst for partnership working between Public services and community & voluntary organisations Pioneering work between service providers and community members Engagement and Influence Value for money targeting resources; building capacity, changing services

Safer & Stronger example: Work together through education and enforcement to reduce violent crime More Active More Often Community-led health organisation in collaboration with public sector partners North Lanarkshire Leisure, North Lanarkshire Council, Strathclyde Police and Sidekix Involves young people in the planning and delivering of exciting youth activities indoor and outdoor activities dance, football coaching, personal lifestyle development, fitness testing Results show: 34% reduction in anti-social behaviour complaints (CHEX-Point Newsletter)

Benefits & Advantages Catalyst for partnership working between Public services and community & voluntary organisations Pioneering work between service providers and community members Engagement and Influence Value for money targeting resources; building capacity, changing services

Wealthier & Fairer & Smarter example: Health Issues in the Community Ensure that our young people enter positive destinations on leaving school (HiiC 2012) People enjoy good mental health and area supported when required: Picture of Health DVD that features community-led projects working with statutory sector partners (NHS and LA) in Edinburgh, Bute, Aberdeenshire and Scottish Borders) (2011)

Doing it well? Willingness to prioritise community-led health Strategic conversations & decisions Shift in emphasis & resources Skilled interventions Who do you need as partners for delivery?
