2 Introduction Research Objectives Research Report: Platform-as-a-service Usage and Satisfaction Study In order to understand organizations usage of or interest in platform-as-a-service solutions, ESG recently surveyed 326 IT professionals and application developers representing small (50 to 99 employees), midmarket (100 to 999 employees), and enterprise-class (1,000 employees or more) organizations in North America. All respondents were personally responsible for evaluating and/or selecting software application development and deployment tools for their organization. For the purposes of this survey, the following definitions of platform-as-a-service (PaaS) were used: Platform-as-a-service (PaaS): Provides development, deployment, and a variety of runtime middleware services to facilitate the construction, testing, and operation of applications. Public PaaS: A PaaS that runs in a public cloud, whose lifecycle (bug fixes and upgrades) is determined by the vendor, whose resources may be shared (multi-tenant), and whose development and runtime services are specifically defined. Private PaaS: A PaaS that runs on private infrastructure (in the organization s data center or privately hosted for the enterprise), whose resources are dedicated to the enterprise, and whose development and runtime services can be tailored to the needs of the enterprise. Hybrid PaaS: A PaaS that supports both public and private personas and is able to treat these resources as a single federated pool. The survey was designed to answer the following questions. (Note: This report is based on the data around PaaS adoption and PaaS satisfaction. The other topics will be covered in future reports.) What is the level of interest and current use of platform-as-a-service capabilities? What platform-as-a-service delivery models (i.e., private, public, or hybrid) are being adopted? What PaaS delivery models are planned adopters currently evaluating? What workload types are organizations using with PaaS services? Are organizations satisfied with the platform-as-a-service product they currently have in use? What is driving organizational satisfaction with platform-as-a-service solutions? How will platform-as-a-service adoption change over the next two years? What languages, frameworks, and development environments are most used by application developers? What vendor characteristics and current/future features do IT professionals and application developers want to see in platform-as-a-service solutions? How important are these vendor characteristics and platform-as-a-service features to IT professionals and application developers? Survey participants represented a wide range of industries including manufacturing, financial services, health care, communications and media, retail, government, and business services. For more details, please see the Research Methodology and Respondent Demographics sections of this report.

3 Research Methodology To gather data for this report, ESG conducted a comprehensive online survey of IT professionals and application developers from private- and public-sector organizations in North America (United States and Canada) between October 28, 2014 and November 6, To qualify for this survey, respondents were required to be responsible for evaluating and/or selecting software application development and deployment tools for their organization. Respondents who were not involved in the decision making process for software application and development tools were disqualified. Respondents were also required to be 26 years old or older and have two or more years of experience working in an IT or application development role. If a respondent was under 26 years old or had less than two years of work experience in an IT or application development role, they were disqualified. All respondents were provided an incentive to complete the survey in the form of cash awards and/or cash equivalents. After filtering out unqualified respondents, removing duplicate responses, and screening the remaining completed responses (on a number of criteria) for data integrity, ESG was left with a final total sample of 326 IT professionals and application developers. Please see the Respondent Demographics section of this report for more information on these respondents. Note: Totals in figures and tables throughout this report may not add up to 100% due to rounding.

4 Respondent Demographics The data presented in this report is based on a survey of 326 qualified respondents. Figure 1 - Figure 8 detail the demographics of the respondent base, including individual respondents current job role/title and years of experience, as well as respondent organizations total number of employees, primary industry, and annual revenue.
