3 1 Why study the programme? The BTEC Higher National Certificate in Sport and Exercise Science is a specialist vocational programme that offers an emphasis on strong sector related skills and concepts and has been designed to meet the needs of those wanting to pursue a career within the Sports or Fitness industry. This programme has been designed to meet the needs of students wishing to progress in a career in Sport and Exercise Science. It will offer a natural progression pathway to further study on an undergraduate programme within Higher Education. Students will develop a thorough grounding in the key concepts of Sport and Exercise Science, which include both the theoretical and practical skills required in the Sports or Fitness sectors. These skills will prepare them for future employment or the transition and integration onto a full-time degree programme of study at entry level 5 having been credited with achieving the first year of the degree programme. Students will have the opportunity to develop higher-level cognitive, interpersonal, numeric and quantitative data handling, self-management, self-awareness and research skills. 2 What are the aims of the programme? The aims of this programme are to provide students with the necessary specialist knowledge required to use sport and fitness equipment, to interpret raw data gained from relevant scientific investigations and to demonstrate the required professionalism to work within coaching and sports massage. Students will also gain a diverse range of subject specific knowledge from specialist units selected to offer a broad understanding of the sport and fitness industry. 3 What should you achieve at the end of the programme? At the end of this programme students will have developed comprehensive advanced level knowledge of various key areas within Sport and Exercise Science. This will offer them a strong, sector-related understanding with an emphasis on practical skills development and essential knowledge and understanding key specific areas principles meeting professional body requirements and National Occupational Standards in the Sport and Exercise Science sector and which are national recognition by employers allows direct progression to Employment or further higher level study. 1. Progress to an undergraduate degree or further professional qualification in Sport and Exercise Science or related areas. 2. Demonstrate independence and competency in various Sport and Exercise Science environments through the effective use and combination of knowledge and skills gained in different parts of the programme to succeed in employment in areas of the Sport and Exercise Industry. 3. Demonstrate appropriate level research and analysis skills in a Sport and Exercise Science context. 4. Apply for membership to relevant Professional Bodies within the Sport or Fitness sector. -3-
4 4 What will you study? The Sport and Exercise Science Higher National Certificate curriculum s structure contains four mandatory units that provide a rigorous foundation for learning. These compulsory units focus on Anatomy and Physiology, Sports and Exercise Psychology, Training and Fitness and Research Methods. In addition the remaining selection of optional units have been structured to meet the needs of year two study pathways and include Sport in Society, Biomechanics, Coaching, Sports Massage and Performance Analysis. 5 How will you be taught? Students will learn through a variety of taught sessions, individual/group practical sessions, self-directed study and where relevant interaction with external community links to create employment based learning environments such as local schools for coaching. 6 How will you be assessed? Students will be assessed through, written assignments, coursework, presentations, testing-based practical work and the practical delivery of sessions. 7 What are the entry requirements? East Kent College and Canterbury Christ Church University encourage and welcome applications from all students with the potential to succeed on this course. Applications are considered individually and we take into account academic qualifications in addition to paying great attention to the personal statement and the reference(s) provided with the application. An offer of a place on the Higher National Certificate is offered in terms of grades up to a certain number of UCAS tariff points. For example, a typical offer for entry to an HNC is 120 UCAS tariff points. In order to meet this entry requirement an applicant would, for example, need to have gained two A-levels at Grade D or above OR achieved PPP for a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma OR MP for a BTEC Level 3 Diploma. Applicants studying on an Access to Higher Education programme will need to achieve a Pass in their qualification in order to progress to a Higher National Certificate. 8 How should you apply and how will you be selected? Applications should be submitted through UCAS using the four digit code: C Where will you be taught? The programme will be taught at the East Kent College Broadstairs Campus with access to additional learning resources (Library and IT) at the Broadstairs Campus of Canterbury Christ Church University. 10 How long will you normally need to study to complete this programme? The duration of this programme of study is one academic year. -4-
5 11 What will you need to achieve to progress from one level or stage of the programme to the next? Successful completion of the HNC in Sport and Exercise Science will enable progression to the BSc in Sport and Exercise Science at Canterbury Christ Church University. 12 What will you need to achieve to graduate and how will your overall grade be calculated? The successful completion of each assessment and whole unit/module is required by each student. Students will be graded for each item of assessment undertaken linked to the relevant learning outcome, the results of each assessment will then count towards their overall grade for each module. 13 Are there any external bodies involved in the development and approval of the programme? 6 1.2 PROGRAMME SPECIFICATION PART TWO: FOR THE UNIVERSITY 1 Programme rationale The Edexcel BTEC Level 4 HNC in Sport and in Sport and Exercise Sciences provide a specialist work-related programme of study that covers the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required in the Sport, Leisure and Recreation sector and also offers particular specialist emphasis through the choice of specialist units. Edexcel BTEC Level 4 HNC provide a nationally recognised qualification offering career progression and professional development for those already in employment and opportunities to progress into higher education. The qualifications are mode free but they are primarily undertaken by part-time learners studying over two years. In some sectors there are opportunities for those wishing to complete an intensive programme of study in a shorter period of time. This specification gives centres a framework to develop engaging programmes for higher education learners who are clear about the area of employment that they wish to enter. The Edexcel BTEC Level 4 HNC in Sport and in Sport and Exercise Sciences offer a progression route for learners who are employed in the Sport, Leisure and Recreation industry. 2 Aims of the programme This programme aims to provide the knowledge, understanding and skills required for success in employment in the Sport and Exercise Science industry or for progression to a Degree or further professional qualification, supported by the development of analytical and research skills through extensive practical and theory based research activities. Progression could be in to types of work, such as in performance analysis, nutrition for sport and exercise, sports development, sports coaching, education, research and development etc. 3a Programme Learning Outcomes The following specific Programme Learning Outcomes have been devised with reference to the HNC generic learning outcomes. On successful completion of the Higher National Certificate, students will be able to: 1. The Programme Director will choose the required number units to the value of 60 credits from the specialist unit list (above) with a credit value of mandatory and optional modules to a total value of 120 credits. All students will complete all units specified within the designed programme of study. 5 Accreditation of Prior Learning APL will be undertaken in accordance with the University regulations. Edexcel guidelines for APL are: Edexcel encourages centres to recognise learners previous achievements and experiences whether at work, home and at leisure, as well as in the classroom. RPL provides a route for the recognition of the achievements resulting from continuous learning. RPL enables recognition of achievement from a range of activities using any valid assessment methodology. Provided that the assessment requirements of a given unit or qualification have been met, the use of RPL is acceptable for accrediting a unit, units or a whole qualification. 8 7 Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy HNC students will have access to dynamic and innovative teaching methods and strategies from specialised industry professionals. They will take part in guided learning sessions where direct curriculum delivery will be offered from the relevant tutor. In addition students will also be required to complete additional learning hours outside the classroom through their own independent study. Due to the nature of some more specialised units teaching will involve a variety of methods and learning environments (classroom, gym, sports hall, sports science lab). Students will take part in both practical activity and theoretical studies deemed the most suitable and relevant to maximise teaching and learning within the classroom for specific curriculum content. Students will be expected to offer a suitable level of personal fitness, practical sport knowledge and performance and be able to demonstrate their knowledge and interest in sport through active participation to support their studies and in some instances meet assessment criteria. Suitable assessment strategies and timelines will be planned and utilised to ensure assessments are relevant to the criteria and support the skills or knowledge being used effectively within employment. Assessment methods will include student written assignments, observations, presentations and peer assessments. The structure and assessment decisions will be conducted in line with the Awarding Body and CCCU requirements. 8 Programme-specific student support and guidance HNC students will have access to general study support and support for additional/specific learning needs via the East Kent College s Student Central and via the University s i-zone. The College will make available individual and/or small group support for study skills including academic writing. HNC students will also have a weekly programme of individual and small group tutorial sessions provided by the Personal Tutor and/or Programme Director in order to support and monitor student progress. The purpose of the tutorial provision is to: ensure effective communication between staff and students provide a systematic review of student progress support the resolution of personal issues affecting academic work either through advice and guidance or through referral to the most appropriate member of the College s Student Support Team Encourage and support onward progression to employment or university (level 5). 9 Work-Based Learning / Distance Learning / Placement Arrangements (if any) Not applicable. 10 Collaborative Arrangements (if any) The programme is to be delivered by East Kent College in collaboration with Canterbury Christ Church University. East Kent College is a partner College of the University and this collaborative arrangement will operate in line with the University s requirements on collaborative provision. -8-
9 11 Programme Management The Programme is managed by a Programme Director, whose primary role is to coordinate and support the work of the programme team and to oversee all aspects of the programme delivery and rigorous assessment strategies. The programme is delivered within the Programme Area of Science and Sport within the Division of Business, Arts, Science and Education (BASE). The Division is led by the Division Area Director and the Programme Area of Manager for Science and Sport. The Division area Director reports to the College s Assistant Principal. Assistant Principal Head of Division Programme Area Manager Programme Director Christine Ricketts Stewart Haywood Margaret Rickerby Donna Smith Staff-student liaison will occur three times a year as part of the annual Programme Quality Self-Assessment Review process (PQSAR). The Programme Director is accountable for managing the completion of the PQSAR in collaboration with the Programme Team. Student input through student representation at programme meetings and the completion of student questionnaires issued after induction and at the mid-point of the academic year also takes place. Each member of the Programme Team will participate in developmental teaching observations occurring four times an academic year, with best practice encouraged and shared by the Programme Area s Teaching and Learning Facilitator. In addition, a Senior Teaching and Learning Facilitator provides a college-wide overview of the operation of Edexcel BTEC programmes (Centre Manager) and is available to support effective quality management of the programme. -9-
10 12 Programme-specific resources The following equipment and physical resources are the minimum requirements that the College either has or has access to in support of delivery for the HNC in Sport and Exercise Science: Practical Provision: Sports hall Gym Testing laboratory (occasional) Sports Resources: Sport specific resources (balls, cones, bibs, whistles, rackets, bats etc ) SAQ training equipment various Fitness Testing and Analysis Resources: Multi Stage Fitness Test audio recording Skinfold callipers Body Fat impedance measurement Blood pressure monitors Peak Flow Meter Oxidation testing equipment Heart rate monitors Ergometer Treadmill Occasional access to a well-equipped sports science testing laboratory ICT: Access to computer resources (periodic) Access to the use of data analysis software Performance analysis software ATLAS Ti Specialised Resources: Sports massage room/tables/equipment. Relevant Journals and Publications East Kent College Higher Education students will access the Library and open access IT facilities within the Learning Centre at the University s Broadstairs Campus.
