SCALLOPS Contoured Tops that emphasize decorative beading and accommodate different leg sizes. Tony Lame offers a number of scallop designs. 3. PULL STRAPS All lock stitched for extra strength. Sturdy stitching on every pull strap further reinforces the top and guards against separation of front and back quarters. 4. LINING Soft glove-tanned leathers are cemented by hand to the boot parts and stitched inside; linings are specially tanned for suppleness and made to resist the effects of perspiration. 5. GOODYEAR WELT A quality Goodyear welt is sewn to the vamp leather and flattened, thus providing a very strong interlocking stitch to the outsole. 15. RAND A layer of material between the insole and the outsole which provides a clean edge for the base of the heel. 18. OUTSOLE Tony Lames leather outsoles are pre-formed for perfect fit to the last. Heat and pressure bond the outsole to the boot; then the outsole is stitched on. 19. OUTSOLE STITCHING The outsole is stitched to the insole via the Goodyear welt, using a strong nylon braid. 20. HEEL BASE Layered leather heels are positioned on the outside sole and nailed from the inside, then carefully shaped and sanded to perfection. 21. HEEL CAP Tony Lame uses quality rubber heel caps for strength, durability and sure-footing. 22. HEEL PAD A fine leather pad protects the wearer s heel inside the boot. This pad is designed for comfort and moisture absorption.

15 The heel of a cowboy boot was developed to prevent a rider s foot from slipping through the stirrup when working on horseback, which could cause the cowboy to be dragged in the event he became unseated or fell from the horse. Today, cowboy boot heels have evolved into many styles, each with a different function. The original, classic cowboy boot toe was one that tapered and often rounded, allowing the cowboy to easily slip his foot in and out of the stirrups. Through time, the style of toe preferred has changed and varies by region. Today, Tony Lama offers a wide range of toe profiles, from the broad square toe to the fashion snip toe. The traditional cowboy heel (#4) is a tall, under slung heel that is also commonly known as a riding heel. The walking heel (#7), while similarly styled, has a slightly lower heel height. Over the years, the modern roper heel (#23) was created to meet the needs of rodeo cowboys, particularly those involved in calf roping. In an event that requires the competitor to rope a calf from their horse before dismounting, running to, and tying the calf, the lower, squared-off heel made running easier.
