3 The Monash Advantage The Bachelor of (Honours) The Bachelor of (Honours) is a four-year course 3 that prepares you to be a leader in. You can focus your studies in early childhood, primary or secondary sectors or a combination of these and choose from a wide range of secondary teaching subjects, graduating with a highly-focussed, career ready qualification. Areas of specialisation You can specialise to teach in the following sectors and graduate with an award that reflects your expertise: Early Years (See page 14) Early Years and (See page 16) (See page 18) Honours puts you ahead The honours component of your degree is embedded into a four-year course so that in an Australian first you will graduate with an honours qualification whatever your chosen al setting and whether you choose a single degree or a double degree course. This means that when you graduate from Monash after four years you are ready to take a leading role in your chosen al setting and teaching field. It also means that if you choose to study for a fifth year either immediately or at some time in the future you will be able to qualify with an advanced master s degree, putting you ahead of the game. I ve always been passionate about and can t think of any better field to work in. It helps people realise their potential and pursue many more opportunities. In her fourth and final year, Emmeline completed her practicum in two different s in Johannesburg, South Africa. It has been such a privilege to have taught in South Africa. I will always cherish the opportunity of getting to know the incredible students and people of South Africa, and teaching in a tiny portable classroom with fifty students scattered around the room with absolutely no resources. Being immersed into an entirely different cultural context has reinforced the fact that is key to empowering individuals. Upon graduation, Emmeline landed a job at Balwyn High teaching accounting and commerce. Ryan Lucas Focus on your passion My studies have helped me learn more about other cultures. I ve been given the chance to travel and work in unique places such as the Cook Islands and the Solomons. In the Solomons I worked with kids teaching cricket through a job with the Australian Youth Ambassadors for Development (AYAD). Ryan is currently completing his honours project off campus while he works at a in Alice Springs. My project will be about Sport, International Development and Physical. 4 5

4 Three ways to become a teacher There are three different paths to becoming a qualified teacher. You choose the steps you take and Monash will help you get there. Undergraduate single degree in (Honours) Start your from your first day with the Bachelor of (Honours). Focus on a single sector (e.g. primary) or gain a dual-sector qualification (e.g. early years and primary) Undergraduate double degree with (Honours) Combine your studies in with a second course such as science or arts, to build a qualification that is as diverse as your interests. A double degree course is studied concurrently, so you will graduate after four years with two degrees instead of one. Bachelor of (Honours) Bachelor of (Honours) plus Qualified teacher Partner degree Advanced master s (Optional) Qualified teacher 5 Advanced master s (Optional) Gain accreditation Our courses are accredited 4 by: Australian Children s and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) This means when you graduate you have the qualifications to be an early childhood educator or a registered teacher in Victoria. If you want to teach interstate or overseas, you should check the registration requirements with local authorities. You can choose from: Master of Master of Leadership Master of Counselling Master of TESOL Master in for Sustainability 4 Pending final approval Double degree courses The secondary specialisation must be taken as part of a double degree course and the primary specialisation may be taken as part of a double degree course. The design of these double degree courses mean you graduate with two degrees instead of one in the time normally taken for the single Bachelor of (Honours) course. This is because the discipline studies requirement of your course is completed in the partner degree course. That s why we give you the chance to gain practical skills by completing experience through placements in Australia and overseas. Urban Rural Remote International You will complete a minimum of 80 days of supervised placements as part of your course. Through these placements you will have the opportunity to: gain real-world experience put your learning into practice gain valuable guidance from other educators develop your confidence as a teacher. 9

6 A guide to choice How Monash courses are structured At Monash, we let you choose how you study. We offer a range of courses that offer different outcomes. We ll be there to guide you through all the possibilities, so you can graduate with an internationally recognised qualification that can take you anywhere. Flexibility and choice Range of majors A comprehensive course is flexible and evolves as your interests develop in particular directions. You can start with units from a range of study areas and through your choices progressively focus on one or two majors and minors. Specialist focus d for e arly specialisation A specialist course offers you focus and depth through specialisation in your area of interest from the start of your studies. Some undergraduate specialist courses are designed to prepare you to practise in a specified regulated profession upon graduation. Others concentrate on developing particular expertise but may be applicable to a broader range of careers options. You will graduate with a degree that reflects your chosen specialisation. Double degrees A double degree course lets you gain skills in two different areas of interest such as arts and or science and engineering. This lets you tailor your qualification to fit your diverse interests and talents and doubles your options when you graduate. Double degree courses can take up to two years less than if you took the two courses one after the other. This is because the electives from each degree course count towards the other. You will graduate with two distinct degrees. entry graduate courses Some courses at Monash prepare you for direct entry to a profession upon graduation with a bachelor s degree. However, you can also choose a entry postgraduate course after you have completed your bachelor s degree that also prepares you for entry to a regulated profession. These are usually master s degrees. Fields where we offer entry courses for graduates include architecture, law, accounting, nursing. In some fields, including law, nursing, we offer you both options. How to become a qualified teacher There are different paths to becoming a qualified teacher. Curriculum studies The knowledge and skills to enable you to become a skilled, critical and effective educator through: knowledge of what and how children and young people learn in particular learning areas learning how to design, plan and implement engaging, innovative and productive learning experiences learning how to teach to meet diverse learners needs. Discipline studies The content knowledge of the areas you will teach in s or other settings. For some specialisations your discipline and curriculum studies are integrated and in others you study specified discipline units. If you are studying a double degree course, the partner degree course provides the discipline studies. studies Development of your experience through: teaching experience research studies. You complete a minimum of 80 days of supervised placement in settings relevant to your teaching specialisation. This experience connects the theoretical components of your studies with the practical aspects of learning. You undertake research units to develop knowledge of research principles and methods and the skills and capacity to design and conduct research with some independence. This increases your understanding of the complex field of and may provide a pathway for research and further learning. 1 may also be studied as a double degree course. 2 (other than Health and physical ) is studied as a double degree course. The subjects you will be qualified to teach will depend on which degree course you choose to pair it with, and what subjects you choose to study in your partner degree course. At Monash your age is not a factor when you apply just your background and experience. The year of entry depends on what you have studied previously and your results. Diploma of Tertiary Studies (DoTS) DoTS can help you get into Monash if: you didn t achieve the Year 12 score you expected, or you are returning to study.
