1 JOB DESCRIPTION # 17.5 TITLE: Nursing Supervisor FUNCTIONAL TITLE: Supervisor of the Shift JOB CATEGORY: Nursing Management REPORTS TO: Director of Nursing BASIC FUNCTIONS: The Nursing Supervisor is a leadership position within the Department of Nursing. Supervision of Nursing service functions and activities on an assigned shift are carried out in accordance with Department of Nursing and Seven Hills at Groton goals. Such supervision must be in accordance with current federal, state and local standards and guidelines. SCOPE: The position is designed to ensure that the highest level of resident care is maintained at all times. QUALIFICATIONS: Registered Nurse with B.S.N. preferred. Previous leadership or supervisory experience preferred. Several years of related clinical experience with medically fragile, developmentally delayed children and/or young adults are required. SCHEDULE: Full time position with hours varying depending upon the needs of the facility. JOB DESCRIPTION: The statements below are intended to describe the essential duties of the person assigned to this job. They are not intended as an exhaustive list of all job duties and responsibilities. RESPONSIBILITIES AND OBJECTIVES: Ensures that a sufficient number or RN s, LPN, and CNA s are available to deliver care to residents. Ensure caregivers are qualified to provide the direct care, making adjustments in schedule or assignments as needed. Utilize approved staffing patterns. Manage staffing issues as they arise on the assigned shift and for the following shifts. Work collaboratively with peers to ensure continuity of care is maintained on all units and all shifts.

2 Assist in scheduling as directed by the DON. Direct and counsel staff to follow approved Seven Hills at Groton scheduling guidelines. Page 2 Monitor absenteeism and other discipline issues and report issues to DON. Be knowledgeable about Seven Hills at Groton Personnel Policies and apply and document discipline in a manner consistent with these policies. Seek direction from DON/Administrator as needed. Promptly report significant issues to management staff. Maintain confidentiality in managing personnel issues. Ensure that nursing personnel are in compliance with respective job descriptions. Make regular rounds throughout shift to ensure that all nursing personnel are performing their work assignment in accordance with acceptable nursing standards and those interventions reflect a continuous reassessment of the resident s conditions. Provide direct care as necessary and assist the nurses in monitoring and providing care to seriously ill residents. Monitor medication passes and treatments to ensure that medications and treatments are provided in compliance with written policies, standards and regulation. Participate in performance review process with direction from the Director of Nursing. Ensure that all nursing personnel are in compliance policies and procedures. Ensure that resident s families receive all communication as requested and/or needed. Demonstrate an awareness of the boundaries of the therapeutic relationship. Assist peers and nursing personnel in the development of well-defined boundaries in their relationships with residents and their families. Ensure nursing personnel s interactions, with residents and their families, are compassionate, non-judgmental and in a humanistic manner that preserves and protects resident and family autonomy, dignity and rights. Inspect the units daily to ensure that the residents rooms and staff work areas are maintained in a clean, safe manner. Monitor that supplies and equipment are used in a cost effective and effacious manner and that personnel follow established regulations in their use. Assure the nursing staff has adequate stock and supplies to meet resident s needs. Correct and/or report hazardous conditions or equipment. Follow-up on all reported conditions and equipment.

3 Page 3 Inform attending MD, DON and Administrator of all deaths or serious/significant changes in resident s status conditions requiring emergent treatment, hospitalization and possible reportable DPH situations. Inform family members of the death of a resident (a resident with a DNR, who dies at Seven Hills at Groton). Call funeral homes at direction of family/responsible party. Pronounce the death of a DNR resident. Assure proper post-mortem care is delivered. Support staff and oversee the management of all emergency care. Assess and oversee the care of all acutely ill/injured residents. EXPECTATIONS: Foster an environment that facilitates professional collaboration among inter and intra disciplinary colleagues. Recognize own sphere of influence; utilize oneself and the relationship with colleagues to elicit their strength. Build and maintain collegial environment that supports positive group processes. Provide supportive leadership to nursing staff for daily operations. Complete Resident and Employee Incident/Accident Reports. Investigate the event in a timely manner to determine the nature of the problem and take immediate corrective action when necessary to assure resident safety. Notify Director of Nursing in a timely manner of significant events or changes in conditions. Triage all staff injuries and advise appropriate medical care. Notify Employee Health Nurse as necessary. Ensure that staff implements and follow established infection control procedures when isolation/precautions are required. Ensure that nursing personnel participate and conduct fire safety and disaster preparedness drills in a safe, professional manner and in compliance with Seven Hills at Groton policies and procedures. Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the unit and shift.

4 Page 4 Effectively carries out Supervisor of the Shift responsibilities. Make clinical management decisions, which reflect awareness of short-term and long-term needs of the department/facility. Participate in developing, maintaining and updating written policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day functions of the nursing department. Attends Nursing Management and supervisor meetings. Provides leadership to department and Seven Hills at Groton committee and project teams. Be knowledgeable of Quality Assurance projects in progress. Keeps staff on assigned shift informed and ensures their participation in ongoing Quality Assurance Projects. Formulates personal, professional goals and plans for accomplishing these; make continuous efforts to maintain a strong, current clinical knowledge-based skill level. Seek appropriate continuing Education to meet these goals. Evaluates educational needs of colleagues and develops approaches to meet those needs. Uses an individualized approach to assist staff in the process of prioritizing goals and identifies resources to meet their educational needs. Communicates staff needs to Staff Development Coordinator as necessary. Share nursing expertise with colleagues. Teach/coach staff nurses to identify trends or changes in patient responses. Conduct in-services to staff on assigned shift when indicated to ensure compliance with regulations, facility policy or when changes in practice occur. Act as a role model for staff. Conduct unit staff meetings. Assume leadership role in identifying opportunities for improvement, defining goals and developing solutions. Make oral and written reports and recommendations to the Director of Nursing concerning the nursing service department. Develop yearly professional goals; reflect role in achievement of department and Seven Hills at Groton.

5 Page 5 WORKING CONDITIONS /PHYSICAL REQIREMENTS: Work requires frequent lifting and carrying residents/objects up to 10 pounds and regularly lifting and carrying residents/objects pounds. Work requires frequent stooping and bending. Work requires frequent reaching and grasping objects, above and below shoulder level. Wore requires regular pushing and/or pulling non-motorized equipment (e.g. medication carts, beds, etc.) weighing 21 to over 40 pounds. Must be able to speak and write English language in an understandable manner. Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately to ensure that the requirements of this position can be fully met. Must be able to cope with the emotional and mental stresses of the position. Must be able to cope with frequent interruptions and managing multiple, competing priorities. Must be able to function independently, having flexibility and personal integrity. Must be able to work with ill, disabled, emotionally upset residents, their families and personnel. Must be able to move sufficiently to respond to life threatening emergencies including performing C.P.R. and assisting in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
