1 Business Intelligence Solutions Architect Band 8a Job Title: Team: Directorate: Band: Responsible to: Accountable to: Base: Business Intelligence Solutions Architect Business Intelligence Operations 8a Data Processing Development Manager Data Processing Development Manager Kingston House, West Bromwich Context This role will be responsible for designing and implementing business intelligence solutions within the data processing unit of the CSU. The role will ensure that all elements of design are accounted for, including non-functional requirements, across the technical, data, application and business domains. The post holder will be responsible for ensuring all products adhere to the business strategies, goals and principles as set out by the Data Processing Development Manager. The post holder must have a broad technical knowledge across all 4 domains (technical, data, application and business). The post holder must have experience on multiple Hardware and Software Environments and be comfortable with complex heterogeneous systems environments. The person needs an ability to share and communicate ideas clearly, both orally and in writing, to executive staff, business sponsors, and technical resources in clear concise language that is the parlance of each group. Role and Responsibilities Work proactively to identify and prioritise solutions that improve the Business Intelligence service of the CSU Understand the organisation s solution building blocks (e.g. current technical products) and define how new solutions fit within this architecture, reusing building blocks where appropriate Work with the CSU Development teams to assess requirements in line with the current solutions and provide high level design for new solutions Produce high level solution designs Produce comprehensive design documentation To take on the role of Service Owner for Data Processing Unit solutions. The Service Owner role includes being the organisation s expert on the service, with knowledge of how to apply the service to customer needs and advise on how the service can be enhanced in the future. The role also includes supporting both the organisation s internal staff and its customers in relation to this service

2 Recommend, implement and manage change control and source control procedures Responsible for outputs to the customer ensuring that all products have been validated and quality tested prior to publication. Take part in projects and research into the needs of new products and solutions within the organisation To support the customer in the delivery of assigned work plan activities and work closely with customer embedded staff to understand and respond to customer requirements Assume responsibility for existing complex data structures and processes with a view to their optimisation and further development Conduct critical reviews of existing solutions with a view to achieving simplification and/or performance increases Work with the Database Administrator in troubleshooting & optimising performance Assist in upgrades and enhancements to the Data Processing Unit technical environment Deliver technical tutoring & training to other members of the Business Intelligence teams Communicate complex ideas to lay audiences at all levels Ensure compliance with current Information Governance regulations, particularly in relation to the storage & processing of patient identifiable data Contribute to the maintenance & development of the BI system security model Keep up to date with the latest technical advances within the agreed technical specialisms Suggest changes to the team processes and approach to bring about improvements in the team s ability to deliver Demonstrate/present potential solutions to customers, identifying additional requirements and changes

3 Person Specification Business Intelligence Solutions Architect Supporting Evidence In the supporting evidence of your application form, you must demonstrate your experiences by giving specific examples for the criteria within the person specification. Factor Essential Desirable Assessment* Education / Qualifications Degree in either IM&T or management or equivalent (5 years) experience. TOGAF\ISEB Certified. Specialist qualification in an IM&T related area. /C C Skills & Experience Minimum of 3 years non-academic experience of which at least 3 years must be in a senior informatics role in a multiprofessional complex organisation. Evidence in design, code, test, correction and documentation of large and/or complex information systems from both explicit and implicit specifications, using agreed standards and tools, to achieve a well-engineered result. IT skills to develop/create reports, documents or drawings utilising requirement frameworks such as UML. Experience of taking part in reviewing of own work and leading reviews of colleagues' work. Experience of the full set of Microsoft Business Intelligence technologies. Evidence of design & operation of large scale, complex data models & processing procedures. Advanced keyboard skills and the ability to manipulate highly complex data accurately and at speed. Experience of Data Warehouse methodologies. Proven track record for ownership and completion of tasks and self-management of parallel activities. Experience and knowledge of SQL Server Parallel Data Warehouse (SQL Server PDW)\Analytics Platform System appliances. Ability to translate complex technical problems both verbally and in written form to a range of business and technical audiences, including senior management and novice users.

Understanding of data definitions, standards and information requirements across the NHS. Ability to work with customers to translate verbal and written business requirements into briefs for analytical projects and/or technical solutions. Ability to promote and build a customer relationship culture working within defined principles. Proven ability to transfer and develop skills and knowledge in new technical areas at short notice. Knowledge of NHS datasets and information processes. Project management methodology, Prince 2. Source control / team working products, e.g. SubVersion, TFS, Git. Understanding of commissioning process and procedures within NHS architecture. Knowledge of the full set of Microsoft Business Intelligence technologies.
