1 EXPECT TO ACHIEVE The teaching methods and teaching quality on Education and Professional Studies bears the hallmark of high quality and innovative learning and teaching.

2 Why study at Newman University College? has become an increasingly popular area of study for many students. Although the study of education can sometimes be difficult to pin down, typically it is associated with the work of schools and teachers. Whilst this is a significant part of the field, the study of education is actually much wider than this and involves considering and challenging the very ideas of school, schooling, learning and teaching. Students involved in the study of education are, therefore, exposed to a range of practices, theories and ideas that underpin how the work of education is conducted here in the UK and further afield. Certainly, in studying education we might expect to look at such things as learning, intelligence, socialisation and curriculum, but education is also concerned with issues of cultural identity, social justice, globalisation and the environment. Many of our undergraduate students go on to take postgraduate teaching qualifications such as the one-year PGCE or GRTP and hence much of what we do in provides an ideal basis for initial teacher training. The programme is underpinned by a discussion of issues related to learning theory, individual development, education and society, equality and opportunity, access and inclusion, educational alternatives and organisational change. This is then an interdisciplinary field of study that draws on philosophy, psychology and sociology of education. A number of our students also have interests that relate to other areas of allied educational work, such as youth, community and charity work or training and development. In response to this, the programme also draws on aspects of critical theory to explore issues of social justice, globalisation, sustainability and education and the environment. This course is designed to enable students to take as a major, joint or minor subject in combination with another parallel subject. Subject combinations for Major and Joint full-time routes are shown on page 11. 3 BA Honours In this programme the focus is upon identity and the construction of self, the concept of structure and agency (the family, the school and the environment and the culture in which we grow-up) and ideas around truth and justice. In the first year of study an important focus is on the materials and objects we learn from and the learning processes involved in reading books and journal articles, in watching films, documentaries, talking with people and looking at pictures and signs. How do we come to make sense of things? How do we make meaning? So, we re not just looking at learning processes, but also at learning as an on-going process we can never say that we have done with learning, that we no longer have anything left to learn. We need to be equipped to deal with our ever-changing world. Indicative Module List Year 1 Introduction to Learning Journeys Childhood Adolescence and Society Interpersonal Approaches in Education Individual Development in an Educational Context Year 2 Education Systems and Social Change Learning Processes Educational Research Education Alternatives Education, Equality and Identity Individual Differences Education, Imagination and Creativity Media, Children and Youth Culture Year 3 Learning Theory: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives The Politics of Education Safeguarding Children SEN, Access and Inclusion Education: Contested Values and Praxis Research in Education: Dissertation Critical Theory and Education Education and Technologies These modules may be subject to change. The denial of basic human rights, the destruction of the environment, the deadly conditions under which people (barely) survive, the lack of a meaningful future for the thousands of children is a reality that millions of people experience everyday. Educational work that is not connected deeply to a powerful understanding of these realities is in danger of losing its soul. The lives of our children demand no less. 4 BA Honours Part-time Route Newman recognises the importance of providing opportunities to all students with the ability to benefit from a university education. Studied over 4 years instead of 3 years, part-time study is a cost effective solution to gaining your degree as the flexibility it offers will provide you with the opportunity to combine paid employment with study. You will continue to study alongside full-time students and will benefit from the same academic expertise. can be studied part-time as a Joint Honours (50% and 50%) when taken with the following: Art & Design Drama English History Media and Communication Sports Studies Or can be studied as a Minor route of a Combined Honours degree ( 25% and 75% other subject) when taken with the following: Drama English History Sports Studies Alongside the academic quality of our courses, a key feature of the Single and Combined Honours degrees at Newman is a compulsory work-related strand. Both work placements and taught modules link academic study with employability skills and the needs of society at large. The compulsory work placement will equip you with valuable practical experience and ensure you graduate with the transferable skills employers demand. Teaching and Research Newman s lecturing team currently numbers eleven members of staff, all of whom are highly experienced - many having had successful teaching careers in a range of previous educational settings, including FE, early years, staff development and primary and secondary schools. The Education and Professional Studies subject area is also research active with staff conducting and publishing research in a range of related educational areas. These interests include: education and social policy, safeguarding children, creativity, media education and education studies. A number of subject area staff are also appointed PhD and EdD supervisors by the University of Leicester. In addition to this, we also have members of staff with particular expertise in counselling psychology and information and learning technologies; all of which contributes to ensuring that students have access to the best available knowledge and experience as part of the programme. Other Special Features A cornerstone of the combined honours programme is the work placement and work related modules. This provides opportunities for students to engage, first hand, with relevant areas of employment related to education, enabling you to critically evaluate your own development in these settings. Ideas and concepts in education are contested; you will be encouraged to question, challenge, to disagree and propose your own interpretations of the issues that is what education is about! In addition, opportunities exist for students to participate in the University College s international placement programme. All assessment in is conducted through coursework. This includes written coursework/assignments, portfolios, group presentations; individually and paired, collaborative enquiries and web page design. Entry Requirements You will need a minimum of 280 UCAS points to include minimum grades BC at A2 level. 5 GCSEs at grade C or above to include GCSE English language, or a recognised equivalent, are also required. 7 Student Profiles Will Bishop Sports Studies with The main reason why I chose to study Educational Studies at Newman derives from a long standing passion for teaching and learning and education in general. I chose to study at Newman University because of the reputation of the staff within the Educational Department. A friend of mine who previously studied there spoke of their extreme professionalism combined with a friendly and approachable way of delivering learning. I can safely say my expectations were not disappointed and the Education Department s reputation should remain as the Best! The staff really made my student experience at Newman, it was clear to see that they care about each individual s progress and always put the learners interests first. The course provides a well balanced coursework and work placement ratio. During my studies I had to take part in three work placements, which I did at a local Further Educational College. It was through the success and support of the Education Department that secured me a full time job at the end of my course. Now my degree has led me to full time employment in a fantastic educational institution, I can safely say my time at Newman was well worth it and I would do it all over again. The Education Department did a fantastic job in building my confidence and approach to interviews and presentations. Without the departments full commitment I would not be the person I am today. My advice to future Newman University applicants would be... Study Educational Professional Studies! Millicent Manning English with Newman is well known in the teaching field of higher education and as I want to become a secondary English teacher, Newman was my first and only option. Studying combined English with Education Studies, will provide myself with the necessary in depth knowledge regarding education to prepare for me to become a teacher. I enjoy many different aspects of the course and found the experience of learning new things, taking part in different activities and presentations enjoyable. I have worked at different secondary schools, worked with pupils within Newman and hope to gain as much knowledge and experience as possible to help me in my future career. I hope to go on complete Masters at Newman and then teach for some years with the eventual target of becoming a Head of Year. Katherine Boulton Sports Studies and I have always been greatly motivated by sport throughout my life and it felt only right to continue this follow this at higher level of education. My choice to take was influenced by how much I had enjoyed sociology and psychology whilst I was at school, together with my aim of becoming a PE teacher. I really enjoy the practical sessions and workshops within my course. They are very much hands on, allowing me to work with a diverse friendly group of students. I hope to achieve my target of graduating with a 2:1 or higher and go on to do a PGCE, in order to gain Qualified Teacher status. What I like about Newman is I love the fact that I am treated as an individual, with the lecturers knowing everyone bytheir names rather than being another statistic on a piece of paper. Melissa Mulkit Theology and I chose to study based on the fact that I would like to become a Primary School teacher (I intend to do a PGCE after the course). In my first year I found the course content interesting and stimulating. I have learnt new things about the education system which even though I have been in the system for many years, I had no idea about. So far in the course, the topics have taught me theoretically how I can teach effectively in a classroom or educational based settings. This has included the learning space, different learning styles, teacher types and how we can use our environment to effectively teach. I am about to go on a placement at a Primary School, so I can watch these ideas in practice and put them into practice for myself. At Newman class sizes are relatively small, giving lecturers the opportunity to give students individual feedback and support. I have made friends quickly and I am glad I have chosen to come to Newman. It was through the success and support of the Education Department that secured me a full time job at the end of my course. Now my degree has led me to full time employment in a fantastic educational institution, I can safely say my time at Newman was well worth it and I would do it all over again.
