3 Page 3 CURRENT WORKING PAPERS 1. The Impact of Reporting Bias on the Measurement of Socioeconomic Health Inequalities in the United States, with K. Lahiri (2012). ABSTRACT: This paper uses data from the Health and Retirement Study to investigate health perceptions among older Americans and how these perceptions affect the comparability of their self-assessments of health. Many of the characteristics that affect health status are also found to affect perceptions of health. For example, we find that respondents in lower income groups tend to be more tolerant of mental health problems than the rest of the population, and that the least educated tend to be more tolerant of breathing problems. Upon identifying which personal characteristics influence reporting behavior, we estimate models of self-reported health that correct for response scale differences by employing anchoring vignettes. Using and uncorrected model as a comparison, we find that failing to account for reporting differences ultimately leads to a distortion of the estimated relationships between health and socioeconomic status.

4 Page 4 2. Do Federal Disability Insurance Participants Perceive Health Problems in a Unique Way? A Study using Anchoring Vignettes, with K. Lahiri (2012). ABSTRACT: This paper examines whether or not recipients of federal disability insurance inflate their self-assessed health problems relative to non-recipients. To do this, we employ a technique using anchoring vignettes. This approach allows us to estimate how various cohorts of the population interpret survey questions associated with subjective self-assessments of health. The results of our analysis suggest that disability recipients do inflate the severity of a given health problem (relative to nonrecipients) to a small but significant degree. This significant difference remains, even after controlling for socioeconomic status and objective measures of health.
