1 December, 2014 P.O. Box 579, Morwell, 3840 Phone Gippsland FM Awards 2014 The station recently held its annual awards function on its 37 th birthday at the Italian Australian Club. A fantastic attendance of presenters and subscribers celebrated well and took the opportunity to recognise those given awards for their efforts. A very special birthday cake made by Sue Thompson was a replica of the broadcast console and much appreciated by everyone. Award recipients were as follows: Best Program Promotion Afternoons In Arcadia; Best New Program Catching Up With South Africa; Most Improved Presenter Dallas Johnston (The Mix); Best Community Service Our World This Week (for its Morwell mine fire coverage); Best Non Local Program The History Show. The Garry & Ryan Gunn Memorial Award (for outstanding service) Greg Jessep (pictured below). Hall of Fame Induction Hilary Reynolds; Farewell presentations were also made to the Chinese presenter (Brooke Huang) and Dutch presenters (Iedje and Herman Jacobs) were also presented. The presenter of The Year was well deserved with (pictured below) George Cornelis (Dutch Program) being recognized for wonderful support over many years. Chinese and Dutch Program To Conclude It is with regret that the station will lose two of its long-standing ethnic programs with the Chinese and Dutch programs to cease at the end of this year. The Dutch program has been presented for more than 34 years whilst the Chinese program has been around for 20 or more years. The station extends its best wishes to these presenters for their outstanding service to the local community and the station. Great Support From Our Kinda Country The station is indebted to this local country music club for running a fundraiser and awareness event earlier this month. The club raised over $1300 for the station and the station Board was extremely pleased with the initiative of the club in holding this event and the funds that went towards the station. Country music is a key feature of many programs on the station and clearly this coverage is welcome judging by the support of the local community through Our Kinda Country. Life Member Breakfast and Maltese Program presenter Mario Sammut was recently awarded a station Life Membership for his almost 30 years of service to Gippsland FM. Mario also presents a Maltese program on 3ZZZ in Melbourne each week and provides key support to the administration of the station. Mario is pictured left with his nemesis Ken Thompson. You can catch Mario on Breaky Monday and Wednesdays.

2 New Board Elected The annual general meeting was held recently with an impressive roll-up of members who heard about the highlights of the past year and how the station is travelling financially. Whilst a small loss was incurred for the past year, it was acknowledged that the station was endeavouring to deliver a wide range of services and activities extending to the limits of its financial capacity. The election of directors also saw new first time directors elected with Elisabeth Koulouris and Peter Ruff joining Lucy Campbell and Neil Little who were returned. Retiring directors Greg Jessep and Ken Thompson still remain active in supporting various activities at the station. The allocation of Board portfolios is yet to be finalised. CBAA Conference The station was well represented with five members attending the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia annual conference held in Adelaide. Pictured (L to R) with former station participant and Life Member Keith Prestidge (left) is Mario Sammut, Ken Thompson, Les Hunt, Bianca Gawith and Neil Little. All participated in the three day event and brought a wealth of knowledge and contacts back to the station. The CBAA annual conference also provides a great event for celebrating community broadcasting and usually is attended by hundreds of community broadcasters from all over the country. New Carpet The station is very appreciative of the landlord s offer (ETU) to replace the carpet at the station. This was necessary for a range of reasons and the opportunity was taken to also clean up the facilities and remove surplus equipment so much so that the station is almost brand new with a pleasant and clean working environment and a place that station personnel can now take great pride in. Thanks to the ETU for this initiative. The station is also appreciative of Latrobe City who provided some great office furniture which was offered following the conclusion of the Morwell Mine fire enquiry. Youth Focus in 2015 The station is pleased to receive funding from the Victorian Department of Human Services and from the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal / ANZ for two separate projects relating to the participation of local youth and opportunities to develop these people. A co-ordinator for these projects is expected to be appointed by year end. Merry Christmas The station would like to extend its best wishes for the festive season to all of our sponsors, subscriber members and station participants. We hope you will have a safe and enjoyable Christmas period and we look forward to sharing our journey with you all in Marry Christmas and a Happy New Year to each of you and your families.
