ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES PROGRAM COMMITTEE NAME: Vocational Nursing CHAIRPERSON: LaVon Barrett, MSN, RN, CNE MEETING DATE: April 25, 2012 MEETING TIME: 9:00 a.m. MEETING PLACE: WCJH Room 308 RECORDER: Connie Lax, Staff Assistant PREVIOUS MEETING: March 11, 2011 MEMBERS PRESENT: OTHERS PRESENT: Name and Title: Employer Info: and Phone Number Melva Davis Baptist St. Anthony's Hospital Celestine Reed, RN Northwest Texas Health Care System Kim Sims, LVN Bushland ISD Teri Skelton, RN Baptist St. Anthony's Hospital, Pediatrics Yvette Wiggins, RN Ware Memorial Care Center Jeanette Williams, RN Amarillo VA Health Care System Courtney Sanders, Student Representative Candace Smitherman, Student Representative Chelsea Walton, Student Representative Amarillo College Amarillo College Amarillo College EX-OFFICIO'S PRESENT: Bill Crawford Dean of Health Sciences Sheryl Mueller, MSEd, MSN, RN Nursing Division Chair
Debby Carey Advising Associate Susan H. McClure Advising Associate Tamara Rhodes, RN LVN Instructor Lizzy Sharp, RN LVN Instructor Kim Smith, RN Part-time LVN Instructor Teresa Smoot, MSN, RN LVN Instructor Agenda Item Action / Discussion / Information Responsibility Welcome: Welcome: LaVon Barrett LaVon Barrett welcomed everyone to our meeting and thanked everyone for their. support. Introductions: Yvette Wiggins, Chairperson Wiggins asked everyone to introduce themselves. Student Representatives Student representatives were asked to share their thoughts regarding the AC LVN program. "This has been so hard but I loved it"! "The faculty is wonderful. I am so glad I chose the LVN program instead of the ADN". "The instructors are so caring".
"The clinicals sites said they could always tell the AC Students from the others". New Business: Approval of minutes from the last meeting Minutes were reviewed. Williams moved to approve the minutes as written, it was seconded by Sharp. Minutes were approved BON Pass Rate - new test plan The NCLEX-PN test plan was changed % (National pass rate 82%) Nationally the pass rate was 80%. Our pass rate was 86%. Faculty are working on strategies to assist students to prepare for the exam. ATI entrance exam - TEAS V test Discussion regarding entrance exams was conducted. The committee agreed that a standardized exam would possible be helpful. entrance exams. The TEAS test provided by ATI is being considered. Three components will be utilized, reading, math and language comprehension. The group discussed the rigor of the exam and how it would play out with the applicant pool. Bill Crawford expressed that this was a normal concern but things usually evened out. Barrett will continue to research and review.
VN Program Review The VN program review was done this semester. The review covers curriculum, purpose, resources and technology. The review was submitted last week for review. We will have the results at the next meeting. Faculty Attrition The LVN department has had several faculty turnovers. Two instructors have resigned mid-semester in the last 2 semesters. Both were offered positions with more money. AC can't compete in this
area. It is believed the pass rate will be affected by these changes. It is hard for the students and also for the new instructors to pick up in the middle of the semester and it not have an impact. Level II ATI Comprehensive Predictor results The Level II students recently completed the ATI Comprehensive Predictor test. The instructors were "blown away" by the results. One student scored 99% and there were numerous students that scored 90% and above. There is a small group that will need to remediate. They were encouraged to use the ATI online tutor. The tutor makes a review for them based on their weak areas. Some students are purchasing the tutor and this will help with the pass rates. Addition of ATI Simulation Scenarios for Fall 2012 Students will watch the scenarios and then respond. This will help the students with critical decisions and using good judgment. This will hopefully prove very beneficial to
students. The cost is $50 a semester and will be added to fees. Old Business: Implementation of Honor Code Policy Both policies have been implemented. Barrett will supply the Honor Code Policy and Implementation of Social Networking Policy Students sign the policies and it is then Social Networking Policy to Crawford. retained in their file. It has helped with Facebook "issues" and has also been used as A discipline section will be added to the policies. a tool to teach the students what is acceptable and what is not acceptable. It has been used this semester to stress to the students that they are responsible for reporting any issues with their peers. Crawford asked Barrett if she would share both policies with him so that he may use them with the other Allied Health programs. Sharp advised that she would like to see a discipline section added to the policies. Members Issues and Concerns: Skelton She has no concerns or complaints with
the LVN students. They take care of their patients and do their jobs. Her facility has a good LVN population. She has observed that the nurses who start as LVN and transition to the ADN program are better nurses than the nursing students who go straight into the ADN program. "We feel very lucky to have AC at our facility". Wiggins The majority of her staff are LVN's. She has great success with AC students. She encourages them and works with their schedules so they can attend school. The facility has openings in long term care. Reed NWTHS is no longer hiring LVN's for acute care. They are helping the current LVN's transition. She feels this is a trend but LVN's are still in high demand. The facility is still utilizing CNA's. If an LVN doesn't want to transition, NWTHS can use them in a clinic.
Williams LVN's at their facility are solid. Davis AC LVN instructors are better on the floor with the students. The students represent AC very well. Program Issues: Curriculum Issues: Implementation of New competencies have been implemented. Barrett will submit report. DECS - report due to BON by end of June CPECS are new and in portfolio form. The report will be submitted timely by the end of June. Enrollment and Advising for Fall 2012 Advising started in March. It appears we should have a good applicant pool. We are going to limit our new students to 40 this semester. It should result in better retention and completion. Other Issues: Pinning: LVN Pinning is Tuesday, May 1:00 p.m. at Ordway Hall, Washington St. Campus
Bill Crawford Crawford thanked everyone in attendance for their support of the LVN program. LaVon Barrett Barrett adjourned the meeting. Adjournment: 10:00 a.m. DATE: April 25, 2012 NEXT MEETING: Spring 2013
