5 ESL - English as a Second Language (These programs are funded and supported by the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration) See pages 8 and 9 for locations ESL - English as a Second Language Learn English according to Canadian Language Benchmark Standards. By taking our classes, you will be able to: learn basic and intermediate English skills and study basic grammar and sentence structure practice listening, speaking, reading and writing expand your conversation skills, including use of idioms and phrasal verbs learn how to use the computer and develop basic keyboarding skills participate in activities/events designed to further the learning experience ESL and Computers ESL and Computer classes include the skills listed for ESL as well as learning Microsoft Office Applications. By taking this class you will be able to: improve keyboarding skills, and understand how to use the Windows Operating System use Microsoft Word to format business letters, memos, resumes, graphics, word art, and clip art use Excel to create a spreadsheet and learn basic calculations and graphs use PowerPoint to help create professional classroom presentations use , Internet, and ESL resources on the Internet Deaf and Hard of Hearing Class This class is offered for those individuals with hearing challenges. The class is an ESL and ASL (American Sign Language) class. The student will learn English through ASL and speech, and gain confidence to communicate effectively and strengthen language skills in reading, writing and understanding English. TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language The purpose of this course is to prepare students for the TOEFL test, which evaluates the English proficiency of people whose native language is not English. The new TOEFL test will test all 4 language skills - reading, writing, listening, and speaking - through integrated communicative tasks. No more grammar section! Authentic communication required! Our TOEFL course will continue to prepare students for the CBT-TOEFL and will focus on listening comprehension, structure, academic reading and effective paragraph and essay writing. We will also begin to incorporate strategies for the new test to prepare for the new speaking and writing task types. Improve your overall test-taking skills as well as prepare for any further study or profession. Citizenship Training Course Available to Peel & Non-Peel Residents Information about Canadian History, Geography, Government and the Rights and Responsibilities of Canadian Citizens Preparation for the Citizenship Test, including two practice tests Kolbe Group Preparation Course A joint project of Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and Citizenship and Immigration Canada, Mississauga Office was designed to facilitate Canadian Citizenship application procedure and to assist our clients in preparation for the Citizenship test. The course includes: assessment of eligibility for Canadian Citizenship grant assistance in filling out an application for Canadian Citizenship thorough individual check of the application official Citizenship test appointment following the course information about Canadian History, Geography, Government and the Rights and Responsibilities of Canadian Citizens preparation for the Citizenship Test, including two practice tests ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE - WINTER

6 ESL - English as a Second Language (These programs are funded and supported by the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration) See pages 8 and 9 for locations ESL Conversation Class - Advanced This class, taught by an experienced teacher, will benefit those who need to take a standard test such as *TSE, Next Generation TOEFL, or IELTS as well as those seeking employment in Canada. This class will focus on higher level skills: conversation management advanced telephone skills interview skills pronunciation practice oral presentations, reports and debates useful modern idioms persuading, offering opinions, disagreeing, comparing ideas, as well as other rhetorical devices for academic tests and workplace situations. *The TSE is being replaced by TAST, the speaking test in the Next Generation internet based TOEFL Locations: The Collegeway ESL Centre, St. Gabriel A.L.C., Brian J. Fleming A.L.C., and Dundix Square ESL Conversation Class Designed for intermediate English levels and above, this course practices communication skills for daily living, including life skills activities, pronunciation and vocabulary. Adult learners will participate in a variety of spoken activities such as oral reports, debates and effective speaking. Elements of TSE are included. ESL Conversation and Writing Class Learn English according to Canadian Language Benchmark Standards. By taking our conversation/writing classes, you will be able to: practice some listening and reading, but a primary focus on improving conversation and writing skills expand your conversational skills, including pronunciation, use of idioms and phrasal verbs, correcting common mistakes, increasing vocabulary through role play and dialogue creation learn how to fill out credit card applications, write a common complaint letter, thank you note, an essay, job application forms, your resumé, etc. participate in field trips/presentations designed to further learning experience Read and Write This course is designed for students to improve basic reading and writing skills. Students will read a variety of short, reading selections to develop reading, writing and critical thinking skills. 7 FSL - French As A Second Language FSF 1P Core French This course emphasizes the development of oral communication skills, using the theme of media; the development of oral communication skills will be integrated with the development of reading and writing skills. Students will expand their ability to understand and speak French through conversations, discussions, and presentations. They will also read media-related short stories, articles, poems, and songs and write brief descriptions, letters, dialogues and invitations. Offered at St. Gabriel and B.J. Fleming locations. LINC - Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada FREE English Classes With Computers The LINC program is for adult immigrants new to Canada who wish to learn basic and intermediate English skills. Reading, grammar, writing, speaking, pronunciation and listening skills are taught. The LINC curriculum guidelines are followed. LINC Listening & Speaking This is a level 3 4 class where only listening and speaking skills are taught. The class allows adult learners to practice their conversation and listening skills. Topics include current events, everyday life, television, film and documentaries. Do you want to get your foot in the door of a company? 2 programs to choose from: Office Administration/Customer Service Co-op: offered at the Brian J. Fleming site Accounting Co-op: offered at the St. Gabriel site Accounting Co-op: St. Gabriel Learn Simply Accounting and workplace skills in the classroom for 6 weeks. Be placed in an office position for 8 weeks to get valuable office training on the job. Earn 5 Ontario Secondary School Credits. Courses of study: Designing Your Future (GWL 301) This course will guide your career and help you make a successful transition to the workplace. Advanced Accounting (BAN4E) Covers accounting principles for a small business. Students will learn how to use information technology in a work environment, perform electronic research, communicate electronically, and use common business software. They will also explore possible future occupations in information technology. Feature software is Microsoft Office - Windows, Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Internet Explorer. (Consumable Fee) BTA 3O: Information and Communication Technology: The Digital Environment (Advanced Computer) This course offers students the opportunity to develop the information technology skills and knowledge required in a business. Students will learn about the information technology work environment, use industry-standard software, conduct electronic research, investigate electronic business and explore occupations and post-secondary programs that require information technology skills. This course covers advanced features of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Internet Explorer as well as an introduction to Access. (Consumable Fee) BAI 3E: Accounting Essentials (Introductory Accounting) This course introduces students to the use of accounting in business. Students will study various types of businesses and business ownership as well as ways in which accounting procedures are applied in the different types of businesses with regard to recording transactions, preparing financial statements and analysing the process of cash management. They will learn about risks related to credit sales and about collection of debts. Simply Accounting is the featured software. Modules covered are the General Ledger, Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable. Textbook is required. (Consumable Fee) BAN 4E: Accounting for a Small Business (Advanced Accounting) This course expands upon the fundamentals of accounting introduced in BAI 3E by examining each component of the accounting cycle, with emphasis on practical application. Students will learn how accounting is practiced in the workplace by acquiring an understanding of payroll systems, inventory, specialized journals, subsidiary ledgers, sales taxes and bank reconciliation. No prior language experience is necessary. International Languages programs comply with the Ministry of Education curriculum and will be of interest to students who wish to preserve their language and cultural heritage and to those who wish to study the language and heritage of another culture. 32 Adobe Photoshop Software for your Digital Camera Pictures (Adobe Photoshop CS2) Today, digital photography has superceded film photography and the power of digital media is exponentially increasing what the average person can do with their photographs. Today we can simply turn on our computers, load Adobe Photoshop CS2 (Creative Suite 2) and in minutes edit our imperfect digital pictures into superb photographs. In this beginner course you will learn the basic skills to get you comfortable with the Adobe Photoshop CS2 interface and the use of the tools and palettes. The focus of this course is to show you the skills that the average digital photographer would find useful every day in an entirely hands-on environment. Students will explore further the laws of dynamics and energy transformations, and will investigate electrical, gravitational, and magnetic fields; electromagnetic radiation; and the interface between energy and matter. They will further develop inquiry skills, learning, for example, how the interpretation of experimental data can provide indirect evidence to support the development of a scientific model. Students will also consider the impact on society and the environment of technological applications of physics. PREREQUISITE: SPH 3U1 Location: St. Aloysius Gonzaga PLAR For Mature Students Prior Learning Assessment Recognition A formal evaluation and accreditation process for secondary school adult learners to achieve recognition for their prior learning towards completion of diploma requirements. What is PLAR? Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is the formal evaluation and credit-granting process through which mature students may obtain credits for prior learning - the knowledge and skills that adults have acquired, in both formal and informal ways, outside secondary school.
