1 Loyola Law School, Los Angeles is pleased to offer an incubator program for new solo practitioners: the Justice Entrepreneur Initiative (JEI). JEI is designed for recent graduates of Loyola Law School who have passed the California Bar Exam. Through JEI, participating alumni will have the opportunity to start their own private solo law practices over the course of 18 months. Participants will share office space, receive the infrastructure and basic training needed to get their practices up and running, and will serve the local community s legal needs at an affordable cost. Since the economic downturn in 2008, the legal job market has shrunk considerably, leading many recent law school graduates to open solo practices in lieu of working at a small, mid-size or large law firms. However, very few of these individuals graduate with all of the tools and knowledge needed to run a solo practice law business in their first year out of school. At the same time, the California State Bar has recognized the severe dearth of legal services available to low- and middle-income communities, and has strongly encouraged young attorneys seeking work to help provide services to these communities. Loyola s Career Development Center saw the connection between these two problems, and developed JEI as a means for addressing the needs of these communities. Consistent with Loyola s dedication to its alumni and its longstanding commitment to public service, JEI s mission is to assist a cadre of entrepreneurial lawyers in starting their own firms and to facilitate their efforts to serve the legal needs of low- and middle-income communities in the Los Angeles area. Participation in JEI is limited to 5-7 attorneys who will be selected during the application process. JEI will provide participants with: Basic law office infrastructure, including office space and furnishings, necessary office supplies, and Internet access Free access to HiPerSoft, a comprehensive legal case management software program Access to legal research resources and databases, including free access to CEB OnLaw and special packages with Westlaw or Lexis Practical training in how to start and manage a successful law practice Substantive training in selected practice areas and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) courses Mentorship and guidance throughout the duration of the program Participants will pay a modest monthly participation fee that will go towards supporting the infrastructure of JEI, and will commit to devoting 50 hours to pro bono cases over the course of the first 12 months. While participants will be responsible for networking and generating their own cases and clients, JEI will help to set up referral relationships with alumni and public interest organizations in the greater Los Angeles area. Each participating attorney will operate an independent law practice, and will be fully responsible for managing his/her own cases. There will be a 5-day training in December 2015; the program will officially begin in January To be considered for JEI, you must: Be a December 2014 or May 2015 graduate of Loyola Law School, Los Angeles Have passed the February 2015 California Bar Exam, or have taken the July 2015 California Bar Exam (if you took the July 2015 California Bar Exam, you are encouraged to apply to the program, but note that acceptance into JEI is contingent upon passage of the California Bar Exam) Commit to obtaining malpractice/professional liability insurance by January 2016 (JEI will provide you with a list of potential insurers) Commit to establishing a solo law practice for the full duration of the 18-month program There is a $35 Application Fee that must be submitted with your application. (If applicable, discuss how a former work experience in the legal profession [either through an externship, internship, clinic program, or work experience prior to law school] influenced your decision to start your own law practice.) 2. A statement of no more than one page indicating why you should be selected to participate in JEI. 3. A current resume. 4. Two letters of recommendation from Loyola Law School faculty members, preferably ones who taught you in a clinic or experiential learning course. These letters should come from references who are willing to support your capability to complete the training program and remain successful as a solo practitioner.
