17 SANS/ISO WHAT IS ISO ISO 50001:2011 Energy management systems Requirements for use, is a voluntary International Standard developed by ISO; ISO gives organizations the requirements for an energy management system; The standard could influence up to 60% of the world s energy use; and ISO establish a framework for industrial plants, commercial, institutional, governmental facilities and entire organizations to manage energy. 17
18 SANS/ISO THE STANDARD IS INTENDED TO ACCOMPLISH THE FOLLOWING Assist organizations in making better use of their existing energy consuming assets; Provide a framework for promoting energy efficiency throughout the supply chain; Facilitate energy management improvements for greenhouse gas emissions reduction projects; Assist facilities in evaluating and prioritizing the implementation of new energyefficient technologies; Promote energy management best practices and reinforced good energy management behaviours; and Will facilitate companies to achieve energy demand reductions, for example, mining and industry to reduce there energy demand up to 15% by
19 SANS/ISO WHY IS ISO 5001 IMPORTANT Energy is critical and can be a major cost to organizations; Individual organizations cannot control energy but can improve the way they manage energy; Improved energy performance can provide benefits through identifying energy sources and then reducing both energy cost and consumption; Organizations will also make positive contributions towards reducing depletion of energy recourses. 19
20 SANS/ISO ISO HOW DOES IT WORK ISO is based on the ISO management system model ISO follows the Plan-Do-Check-Act process for continual improvement of the energy management system ISO provides a frame work of requirements enabling organizations to: Develop a policy for more efficient use of energy Fix targets and objectives to meet the policy Use data to better the understanding and make decisions concerning energy use and consumption Measure the results Review the effectiveness of the policy Can be implemented individually or integrated with or MS 20
21 SANS/ISO ISO PLAN-DO- CHECK - ACT Plan: conduct an energy review and establish the baseline, energy performance indicators (EnPLs), objective, targets and action plans necessary to deliver results in accordance with opportunities to improve energy performance and the organizations energy policy; Do: implement the energy management action plans Check: monitor and measure processes and key characteristics of its operation that determine performance against the energy policy and objectives and report the results Act: take actions to continually improve energy performance and EnMS 21
