2 7:00 PM - CHINA TOWN HALL WEBCAST ON U.S.-CHINA RELATIONS China s rapid development and Sino-American relations have a direct impact on the lives of just about everyone in the United States. CHINA Town Hall: Local Connections, National Reflections, is a national day of programming designed to provide Americans across the United States and beyond the opportunity to discuss these issues with leading experts. The national program consists of a live webcast, featuring Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, discussing 35 years of U.S.-China relations, as part of the Conversations at The Carter Center speaker series. National Committee on U.S.-China Relations President Stephen A. Orlins will moderate this 60-minute portion of the program, comprised of a 15-minute talk followed by 45-minutes during which President Carter will respond to questions ed in from audience members throughout the country. 8:00 PM YALE PANEL DISCUSSION AND Q&A WITH AUDIENCE Yale panelists will comment on the webcast with Jimmy Carter and also present current issues of importance in U.S.-China relations from their respective fields. 3 CHINA TOWN HALL WEBCAST - BIOS Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.), 39th president of the United States, was born on October 1, 1924, in the small farming town of Plains, Georgia, and grew up in nearby Archery. His father was a farmer and businessman and his mother was a registered nurse. He was educated in the public schools of Plains, and attended Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology before graduating from the United States Naval Academy in He became a submariner, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets and rising to the rank of lieutenant. Chosen for the nuclear submarine program, he studied reactor technology and nuclear physics at Union College in Schenectady, NY, and served as senior officer of the precommissioning crew of the Seawolf, the second nuclear submarine. On July 7, 1946, he married Rosalynn Smith of Plains. After his father died in 1953, he resigned his naval commission and returned to Georgia. He took over the Carter farms, and he and Rosalynn operated Carter s Warehouse, a general-purpose seed and farm supply company in Plains. He served on county boards supervising education, the hospital authority, and the library. In 1962 he won election to the Georgia Senate. He lost his first gubernatorial campaign in 1966, but won the next election, becoming Georgia s 76th governor in January In December 1974, he announced his candidacy for president of the United States, and was elected president on November 2, He counts among his administration s significant foreign policy accomplishments the Panama Canal treaties, the Camp David Accords, the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, the SALT II treaty with the Soviet Union, and the establishment of U.S. diplomatic relations with the People s Republic of China. He championed human rights throughout the world. On the domestic side, the administration s achievements included a comprehensive energy program conducted by a new Department of Energy; deregulation in energy, transportation, communications, and finance; major educational programs under a new Department of Education; and major environmental protection legislation, including the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. In 1982, President Carter became University Distinguished Professor at Emory University in Atlanta, and founded The Carter Center to address national and international public policy issues, working to resolve conflict, promote democracy, protect human rights, and prevent disease. The permanent facilities of The Carter Presidential Center were dedicated in October 1986, and include the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum, administered by the National Archives. President Carter is the author of 28 books, most recently A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence, and Power, published in April On December 10, 2002, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to Mr. Carter for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.

4 Stephen A. Orlins has been President of the National Committee since Prior to that, he was the managing director of Carlyle Asia and the chairman of the board of Taiwan Broadband Communications, one of Taiwan's largest cable television and high speed internet providers. Before joining Carlyle, Orlins was a senior advisor to AEA Investors Inc., a New York based leveraged buyout firm, with responsibility for AEA's business activities throughout Asia. From 1983 to 1991, Orlins was with the investment banking firm of Lehman Brothers where he was a Managing Director from 1985 to From 1987 to 1990, he served as President of Lehman Brothers Asia. Based in Hong Kong, he supervised over 150 professionals with offices in Hong Kong, Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Manila and Singapore. Prior to joining Lehman Brothers, Orlins practiced law with Coudert Brothers and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison in New York, Hong Kong and Beijing. From 1976 to 1979, Orlins served in the Office of the Legal Advisor of the United States Department of State, first in the Office of the Assistant Legal Advisor for Political-Military Affairs and then for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. While in that office, he was a member of the legal team that helped establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. Orlins is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College and earned his law degree at Harvard Law School. He speaks Mandarin Chinese and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. In 1992, Orlins was the Democratic nominee for the United States Congress in New York's Third Congressional District. YALE PANEL DISCUSSION - BIOS David Bach is Senior Associate Dean for Executive MBA and Global Programs and Senior Lecturer in Global Business and Politics at Yale School of Management (SOM). An expert in international political economy, his research and teaching focus on business-government relations, nonmarket strategy, and market regulation in a globalizing world economy, with particular emphasis on the regulation of financial markets. At Yale SOM, he teaches a core MBA course on State & Society as well as an elective course on Nonmarket Strategy. As a member of Yale SOM s leadership team, Dean Bach oversees the school s MBA for Executives program and the newly established Masters in Advanced Management, coordinates engagement with the 27-school strong Global Network for Advanced Management, spearheads curricular innovation in the area of global business, supports the development of portfolio management at the school, and is responsible for Yale Center Beijing. Bach enjoys working with the media and is frequently quoted on topics including the international economy, financial markets, the European Union, business-government relations, and innovation in management education in leading international news outlets such as the Financial Times, The Economist, New York Times, BBC, Reuters, Times of India, and South China Morning Post. A native of Germany, he received his Ph.D. and M.A. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley, and holds a B.A. magna cum laude from Yale University.

5 George Chen is a 2014 Yale World Fellow, the 14th World Fellow from China and the 2nd from Hong Kong. An award-winning journalist with more than a decade of reporting experience on China s financial industry and economic reforms, George is currently the Financial Editor and Mr. Shangkong Columnist at the South China Morning Post (SCMP), Hong Kong s premier English language newspaper. George joined SCMP in February Based in Hong Kong but born in Shanghai, George s writing is informed by his experiences in the Greater China region s two financial capitals. He is an author of two books -- Foreign Banks in China (2011) and This is Hong Kong I Know (2014). George previously worked for Reuters and Dow Jones in Shanghai and Hong Kong, with numerous overseas assignments. He holds a Master s Degree in International Relations and a Bachelor s Degree in Economics, and is a candidate for the Doctor of Public Administration Degree at the University of Hong Kong. George is on Deborah S. Davis is a Professor of Sociology and East Asian Studies at Yale, where her primary teaching interests are inequality and stratification, contemporary Chinese society, and methods of fieldwork. She first went to Asia as a Wellesley-Yenching Fellow at Chung Chi College at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and later taught at Tunghai University in Taiwan and Peking University in China. In addition to teaching at Yale, since 1992 she has she coordinated a summer fieldwork seminar where Yale students work collaboratively with students from CUHK and China. Davis is currently a member of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, Associate Editor of The Journal of Asian Studies, and on the editorial board of The China Quarterly. In 2004, she helped launch the Yale China Health Journal. At Yale she has served as Director of Academic Programs at the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization, Chair of the Department of Sociology, Chair of the Council of East Asian Studies, Director of Graduate Studies in both East Asian Studies and Sociology, Member of the Publications Committee for Yale Press, and co-chair of the Women Faculty Forum. Author or editor of 10 books, past publications have analyzed the politics of the Cultural Revolution, Chinese family life, social welfare policy, consumer culture, property rights, social stratification and occupational mobility. In 2009, Stanford University Press published Creating Wealth and Poverty in Post-Socialist China, co-edited with Wang Feng. Forthcoming with Stanford in 2014 is a volume entitled Wives, Husbands and Lovers: Marriage and Sexuality in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Urban China, co-edited with Sara Friedman. Also forthcoming is an essay in The China Quarterly that used satellite night-time light images to track and estimate the social impact of urbanization in China. Currently she is completing a monograph entitled A Home of Their Own, a study of the social consequences of the privatization of the institution of marriage in Shanghai. A graduate of Wellesley College, Davis received an M.A. in East Asian Studies from Harvard, a Ph.D. in Sociology from Boston University and post-doctoral research grants from ACLS, SSRC, the National Academy of Sciences, National Institute of Aging, and the Luce, Rockefeller, and Templeton Foundations. In 2013, she was awarded the Yale College Lex Hixon 63 Teaching Prize for Excellence in the Social Sciences.

6 Jessica Chen Weiss is Assistant Professor of Political Science at Yale University and Research Fellow at the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies. She is the author of Powerful Patriots: Nationalist Protest in China s Foreign Relations (Oxford University Press, 2014). The dissertation on which it is based won the 2009 American Political Science Association Helen Dwight Reid Award for best dissertation in international relations, law and politics. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in International Organization, China Quarterly, and the Journal of Conflict Resolution. Her research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, Uppsala University, Princeton-Harvard China & The World Program, Bradley Foundation, Fulbright-Hays program, and University of California Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation. Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, she received her Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego in Before joining the Yale faculty, she founded FACES, the Forum for American/Chinese Exchange at Stanford, while an undergraduate at Stanford (B.A., 2003).
